Funny you should bring this up now. Normally I avoid them, at least if I think there's a chance I'll want more by the artist. Being a big boy now I'm more likely to buy a mulit-disc box than a single disc comp if I'm starting with a new-to-me artist. However just a couple of days ago I ordered 2 compilations from yourmusic. Although I have 7 Coleman Hawkins discs and plan on getting more, I picked up the Centennial Collection in part because it has a DVD, plus I don't have many of the audio tracks. Also grabbed the 2 disc/1 dvd Ultimate Billie Holiday collection. For years I've intended to grab one of her label boxes but never got around to it. (Used to be adverse to jazz vocalists too.) Finally decided this will force me to make some decisions (or maybe not.) And if I do decide to go nuts I'll still get a dvd out of the deal. As mentioned earlier many of the pre-LP artist cds are comps, though I suppose there's a difference between "complete Brunswick" and a "best of." My Lester Young collection started with the Verve Swings comp, and I still find it useful. And like take5 I haven't moved beyond my Tatum's Finest Hour disc, despite all the stars assigned the Pablo boxes. After borrowing some Beth Orton discs from a friend I've decided to either just get her first album or get a comp (for someone without that many albums she has several.) So yeah, maybe it took a scarcity of shelf space to realize "best of" cds have their place!

Where are you getting your numbers? I look at this source, Baseball Almanac, at http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/hibavg3.shtml George Brett! That's one that I just happened to know. My favorite baseball historical stats site is: Baseball-Reference

Conn got it. On one of his guesses.

Yup, haven't had cable since I lived with my folks in the early '80s. Watch what quality stuff I have time for on DVD. Still watch a national news broadcast & the local out of habit, a couple of shows like The Office and occasional sports (more during the playoffs, though without cable I either miss the early rounds or go out to see it somewhere if I have to), but very little primetime viewing otherwise. Not when there's music to listen to! Sometimes the promos for shows I don't watch are so awful it makes me consider getting rid of the thing altogether, but instead I just self-ration it. Ron, I'd look into what you can pick up with rabbit ears and consider cutting the cable. You can then boost your CD budget accordingly! Even spring for the fabby autographed organissimo releases instead of the "regular" versions.

D'oh! OK, I guess I leave instructions with the neighbors and reevaluate my decision! -
For me I don't find NAMBLA funny, and it has nothing really to do with the nature of the organization. Way back when web based forums like this weren't around because a page with avatars and pics in the sig lines would take 2 minutes to load as we were using the new fast 28.8 modems, NAMBLA trolls used to disrupt newsgroups for 2 to 3 weeks almost every year it seemed. It'd go something like this. 1) A troll (who wasn't even a member of NAMBLA) would makes some posts about NAMBLA on a newsgroup. 2) A bunch of people would complain about bandwidth being wasted by these unrelated and offensive posts. 3) Followed by a bunch of people complaining that the people complaining about bandwidth being wasted were wasting more bandwidth than the troll. 4) Advice about how to handle trolls, along with deep discussions about homosexuality, age of consent, etc. would follow. 5) Around the time things started to settle down, the NAMBLA troll would assume the identity of a prominent poster. Chaos ensues for at least a week. The newsgroup would be absolutely useless. So that's all that bummed me out about your post, as it reminded me of online communities getting derailed. I got so sick of that sort of thing that I got rid of my internet connection for a few years in the '90s, which looking back was a good thing after all. As for the comics, I did happen to see them long ago, probably in an emailed link when Smithers sexuality became more prominent in The Simpsons. One of the few times I was ahead of the curve as I'm so slow...well hell, I just discovered Jack Teagarden last year. I giggled at many and scratched my head over others - hard to believe some are even real, but apparently they are. I have no problem with a teacher who has a dark or twisted sense of humor. Beats having to sit in a class with a drab one, that's for sure!

Maybe part of the reaction here is it's a very old joke. At least very old in internet time.

10% Off On Selected Mosaic Box Sets

I think I'm going to take this as a sign. I'm going to be on vacation during that time, so I think I'll get the Venuti/Lang instead to go with the Bix/Tram/Tea. Even "limiting" myself to 2 made it a tough decision, but I think a big chunk of 20s & 30s music ought to be a blast! Stitt joins the ever growing future purchase list instead. -
I think maybe one of his students found his organissimo password.

Well, 2007 is closer than it was a few months ago. I'm really looking forward to this set even though I've not heard a note of his as a leader, and have barely even heard him on the side either. In the meantime, the Ellington is still on for November!

Sports / Finance: Tiger Woods' New $38 Million Crib
Quincy replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not knocking Tiger in the least and it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up setting the record for most majors, but I don't think it's automatic. I think the biggest danger to him would probably be a shoulder injury or back pain developing as he ages. Or who knows, maybe he'll mellow or not golf enough to stay as deadly sharp as he is now if he becomes a father. But the other thing to consider is that right now there's probably a teenager out there who will become very competitive as Tiger goes into his mid-to-late 30s. It wouldn't take a golfer as great as Tiger or Jack to mess with Tiger's assault on the record. It'd just take another Tom Watson. Nicklaus finished 2nd to Watson in 2 Masters, 1 U.S. Open, and 1 British Open. If Tom Watson didn't exist Jack may have had 4 more majors. Somewhere down the line the best golfer after Tiger's prime will come along. Whether that guy and a few others in the future become tough enough competitors, just have to wait & see. -
There are 3 Picks from Sept. '72 and they could still do more from that month & year without complaints from me. If their tapes are in good baking shape or better, 9/28 deserves it. Something could be done with the Waterbury (23rd & 24th) too, make it a comp just to piss of the completists. Oh what am I saying, maybe Rhino will start selling harddrives with "pick your tours" in a few years (do you want the Stealie or Roses design?) Think of what you'll save with shelf space.

Back in the vinyl days I was sorta in the same place as you, only I also picked up More Hot Rocks too, and later added the earlier issues. Aftermath is the most glaring omission, but like the others have noted, those early albums are really good too (especially 12 X 5 after Aftermath, and everything before that, especially Out Of Our Heads.) It is like Beatles in some respects in that you really do want it all thorugh Sticky Fingers...um, 'cept if it was Beatles it'd be Let It Be! I'd add that if the price is right (as in cheap cheap cheap) if you can get Goat's Head Soup or *maybe* even It's Only Rock & Roll or maybe even find Undercover used they *might* worth picking up. Goat's Head & Undercover only competing vs. the latest release or Tattoo You sort of thing, and again for only $4 or $5 a disc. And what the hell, if you don't have More Hot Rocks, if you find Satinic Majesty's Request at the right price, you may need that too, even without the 3D cover. What the heck, you did acid in college right? edit - If it isn't obvious, I am posting while tipsy, so toss this advice accordingly.

I've been a fan of Sal Fasano going back to his short season single A days with the Eugene Emeralds back when they were affiliated with the Royals (Cubs & now Padres since then. Way back in the early 70s Eugene was the Phillie AAA team where Schmidt, Bowa & Luzinski played.) I saw a game where he doubled to left, doubled to center and either doubled to right or hit a long single that advanced the runner 2 bases. He put up a John Wockenfuss season where all the singles were long ones and he walked a lot that year. I thought he'd be a big time major leaguer but instead he's the type of guy who every time he gets cut another team picks him up. Ah, the life of the back up catcher I guess. But lemme tell ya, that year in Eugene (with Hal Sutton & Matt Sweeney on a short season single A team) he was very much like Gene Tenace, which is pretty darn good. I'm very happy for the guy to be Posada's backup and getting to play in Yankee Stadium, which is a long way from Civic Stadium in Eugene, which I believe is now something like the 9th oldest minor league park. And a beautiful park it is! (This post has been brought you by the fine hoppy beers of the Pacific Northwest. Better I hang here than at the Mosaic website right now.)

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN JON BENET RAMSEY CASE
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
He looks so much like the 6th grade teacher I didn't have (there were just 2, and I got the other one.) I'm probably going to end up having a very disturbing dream mixing up my childhood with this. -
box sets with extended/expanded LIVE material??
Quincy replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
The currently available Mosaic set The Complete Roulette Jack Teagarden Sessions is a mix of studio & live recordings. About a disc (give or take) worth of the live material was previously unreleased. -
11, and I think I'll add 2 before the month is out. Bix/Tram/Tea & Stitt are the front runners, though Venuti/Lang & Parlan are still in the race. Odd how a week ago Stitt wasn't even on the radar (at least in terms of a big big box.) But dang, those samples are too good!
-
I saw that picture and thought the same thing. That's a smoke thrower's follow through! (won't mention how I picked him for a fantasy team a few weeks ago and stuck with him....oops, sorry, just did) He has been on a roll. Even when he's bad he's interesting. If he stay's healthy, you're going to have some good times in Philadelphia.
-
He's a slave to the pitchcount (like many) and Volquez had thrown 104. Must protect the young arm. As far as firing Showalter, all those stories of micromanaging are kinda frightening. Hey, hire someone who has that post-Showalter touch like Torre or Brenley and you'll win the World Series after you fire him! (Good things come in 3s right?) Dang Big Al, as soon as they do so happy days! But I had Mariner dreams of them slopping their way in and winning in the first round. Of course they'd lose in the LCS, but not before me getting my hopes up due to the momentum. But this series vs. y'all has made that a less likely happening. Oh well, maybe there's next year for Jamie Moyer in the WS. And yeah, Red Sox & Yankees & Tigers & (since Liriano is down) White Sox (what the hell, defending champs ya know) is the top four fight I want to see, but that's the way it is. There have been plenty of wild card or less deserving winning percentage teams ('73 Mets, '85 Royals, Twins, etc.) that made things interesting at least. So if the system lets in your Rangers, take it!

The first impression wasn't so hot with me either. However, it is a fairly modern reissue where they filled up to the brim with 78 minutes. As you note the 1st part is more or less OK, so if more of those tracks click after a couple of plays it may be a keeper. A lot of music played since then but I thought there was some nice Burrell on at least a couple of tracks, though the 2nd session without him gave me an itchy remote finger. It's quite alright not to play a CD all the way through if that's what it takes to improves it.

Mike Douglas, TV talk show host has died.
Quincy replied to DukeCity's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Actually it's the Merv Griffin set. Great lil' pic you posted. Yeah I remember watching it some too. I think John Lennon was a bit of a fan which is why he did that run of appearances on the Mike Douglas Show. -

You fellas don't fart around! Not that I'd ever think y'all would. The Venuti & Lang is another I'm curious about. I doubt I have 45 minutes of music from them and I like what I have. Big jump into the deep end of the pool from that to the Mosaic. Appreciate your thoughts as you start to explore it. -
Bitches Brew sometime in high school. I was into guitar gods so I was getting it for McLaughlin. Ended up getting Jack Johnson & In A Silent Way next. Ended up I kind of liked the trumpet player enough to try things without the guitarist. Either Saturday Night At The Blackhawk or 'Round About Midnight was the first acoustic purchase. Oh wait, that other list making album of his was before those last two. Kind of somethingorother.

10% Off On Selected Mosaic Box Sets
Quincy replied to Dave James's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
One set that I've been on the fence about is the Bix, Tram & Teagarden. Years ago I found a cutout 4 disc JSP J. R. T. Davis set of Bix & Tram for very cheap. It's just not quite enough of Bix & Tram for me, though so far I've made do. Aside from the possibility of better sound, the thing that really pushes me towards buying this is the inclusion of the Teagarden. On the other hand I could probably track down a Classic or 2 that would have the same Teagarden material (guessing, I haven't really checked.) Hmm....decisions decisions. After spending far too much on cheap Concords, do I dare buy a $112 Mosaic to save $11? Hmm.... "Pushes" are welcome, as we're early into the month.
