I'm 52 years, 1 hour and 25 minutes young.....
Quincy replied to fasstrack's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Gee, you look so much younger in print. Have a great day, or at least as great of one as a MINOR MAN can aspire to have. -
I've ordered a 1040 spinner from thejungles.com and everything arrived ship shape. I was even able to successfully put it together. They have the same Wood Technology shelving you're after for $289 (before shipping.) They're based in Walnut California. They have good service too, as a friend of mine received a top to a spinner which did not have the drill holes. They sent him a proper one very quickly.

Well, it is still available and on sale at True Blue Music...for $199.98.

That's spooky. I ordered 33 plus the Coltrane Box last Wednesday and have heard nothing since too. Order #5589. <Insert theremin music> And now mine are shipping! I had complete confidence that would happen the whole time. I'm sure this means my order taking neighbors orders are on their way too.

I'm with you. Feels almost like one of those hostage situations, where they let some out every few hours yet we still don't know the fate of our loved ones. OK, it's NOTHING like that. No need to be overly dramatic about this. Still, if anyone feels like praying for our orders to be fulfilled...

Same here too (same time ordered as well.)

33 + the 16 disc Coltrane box. 7 were upgrades where I'll sell my old ones back.

The graying of the record store
Quincy replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
We have a long-time independent owner who is also adding a vinyl section. He was the first in town to start selling CDs and got rid of vinyl 20 some years ago. The other independent kept records the whole time and it's a younger lot going back to the stacks. Adding vinyl isn't just about selling old records. Artists such as Cat Power have been releasing vinyl versions of albums for some time. Her latest "The Greatest" had a bonus track not on the CD (or at least 2nd pressings on), which is kind of amusing as the CD format has more space, but there you go. Jazz may seem darn near dead, but the Indie music scene is full of music collecting geeks. The kids I know buy CD singles and imports along with the regular releases, and hunt down songs that end up only on soundtracks. They are just as obsessive & compulsive as some jazzbo trying to hunt down rarities. And their geekiness requires that they own the physical object because they want the doodles, pictures and liner notes along with the music. Are the twentysomethings the end of the line for those who desire pressed discs? I dunno, maybe. But as I have 20 years on them then maybe there will still be record stores for as long as my hearing holds out. -
No jazz in our house. My mom loved opera, Joan Baez, Roberta Flack & Judy Collins. Dad liked the Clancy Bros. (he's from Ulster), Pete Seeger, and the Chad Mitchell Trio. They bought a few John Denver albums by way of the Chad Mitchell Trio, as John replaced Chad after his pot bust (I think that's how it worked.) They got into the Beatles by Abbey Road & Hey Jude, which I played on the console stereo as a 6 year old. Fiddler On The Roof, Camelot, and My Fair Lady got a lot of spins. Long ago I plucked a few from their collection that they probably only played once or twice. They bought Dylan's The Times They Are A Changing but didn't like his voice. (They preferred Peter Paul & Mary's versions.) Bought the Kinks Arthur for the subtitle (The Decline & Fall of the British Empire) but must not have liked it. Also Johnny Cash's Ride This Train which I don't recall them ever playing it. Now they seem to play nothing but Irish tenor John McDermott. Lemme tell ya, there are some mighty sappy arrangements on those songs, oof! On my last visit while driving around on a day trip one of his discs was going around for the 3rd time. I was about losing my mind and asked "why not put in something else." In went another McDermott. But the greatest musical gift from dear old dad - Tom Lehrer. Thanks dad!

After hearing Sonny's Worktime as a K2 I upgraded all of my Sonnys, and I'm not an automatic upgrader. Glad I did. Also glad I forgot to upgrade one, so I could do so for just $2.98! I'm pretty sure Claude has a post somewhere on the one or 2 K2s that failed to impress him. Hopefully he'll pop in.

24 (3/24/74) has one of only 3 Playin' sandwiches performed and is a delightful 2 disc morsel. 31 (8/4-6/74) is more like Thanksgiving dinner. Listen to all 4 discs at once and you'll burst. Both are recommended. However, if you don't have DP 12 (6/26 & 28/74) I'd strongly encourage you to get that 1st. The China/Rider intro is one of the most beautiful things they ever did. I received DP 13 (Nassau 5/6/81) accidentally and I'm very glad that happened as it's a keeper. Very solid show with a strong "He's Gone" and jamming that follows. It also has a "hidden" Scarlet>Fire from 11/1/79 on disc 2 which makes a very nice bonus. Speaking of '79, DP 5 (12/26/79) might be my favorite post Keith & Donna era Pick. The band was really on in the fall of '79. Not much else to say, other than many who don't care for the post Keith & Donna era end up liking this one (along with 12/28/79 which circulates.) I have DP 21 (11/1/85) but I like the 2 above more. The filler is killer though from 9/2/80. One that I like that few seem to is DP 6 (10/14/83). Criticisms center around that they should have picked another show from that week and that Jerry & Brent's voices are rough. However, look at Disc 2 (Scarlet>Fire Estimated>Eyes.) Disc 3 has a nifty jam going into The Other One. And though his voice is rough, I loved Jerry's set 1 songs from that era (Althea & Alabama Getaway.) The St. Stephans that were played in the shows that weren't picked for a Pick were interesting & fun, but not that well executed. I think this is a highly underrated DP. Oh oh oh! How could I forget about Reckoning. This is the acoustic brother to Dead Set (which I don't recommend) from the Warfield & Radio City Music Hall shows in '80. They've now added a lot of extra songs to it with the latest remastering. The acoustic "Bird Song" is one of my all-time favorite performances, and there's much more than that. A+.

??????????????? ???????????????? You're getting your classic rock sax appearances mixed up. Curtis Amy is on 2 Doors albums. Without looking them up I'm going to guess The Soft Parade and maybe L.A. Woman. Or would that be Morrison Hotel? I'm on a 15 year sabbatical from The Doors so it's hard to remember the horn songs. Steve Gregory and Greg Beadle handle the sax on Honky Tonk Women.* *page 338 of Bill Wyman's Rolling With The Stones

I use both Windows & a Mac, though I do all my downloading on the iBook. I've had great luck using xACT for converting FLACs and SHNs. I'm using an older version (1.4b21) with OSX 10.3.9. The more recent version of xACT is 1.58. Anyway, it seems pretty friendly and prompts you where you want to deposit your converted files. There's a checkbox if you want to dispose of your FLAC files after conversion. Sometimes those downloads from Archive don't unzip properly after downloading. I believe the latest (free) version of StuffIt can now handle those rascals, at least one did for me after updating. Oh yeah, the link for xACT.

It has entered my mind that the Evans & Coltrane boxes may be reissued in a few years with a new & improved remastering. I had delayed buying the Coltrane box as each K2 whittled away a small percentage of the box. When it was priced at $150 to $200 I could justify waiting a little bit longer and seeing if perhaps they'd K2 the whole thing or if I could find it on sale somewhere. I've heard all but 2 of the sides from borrowing from the library and a friend. I look at this sale price as a reward for being a good little boy and not burning any of it.

Good job! I showed "restraint" with 33 + the 16 disc Coltrane box. Weeeeeeeeeeee! That'll take some time to go thru! And to think when Alldirect went down I was bummed that it would be harder to get the JC for less than $140. I upgraded 7 of my Monk, Dolphy & Miles to K2s and I figure with the money I'll get for the old ones I've probably upgraded for somewhere between free and maybe 50 cents per. Had to do it! Looks like Mosaic won't be getting any of my money for awhile. (Crossing fingers that certain sets suddenly don't hit "Last Chance" anytime soon!) The giant grab bag of OJCs is loads of fun as I've done it before, though nothing quite this big. Oh heck, now I've got to expand the shelving.

It's available right now on the torrent site whose name rhymes with dozen.

Banjo hitters? You forgot Konerko who's slugging .559 & Crede at .512. Uribe is on pace to hit 20+ HR, as is 2nd baseman Iguchi. That's pretty nice power from the middle infield. A.J. will probably cool off, but hey, .320/.365/.444 from a C is pretty darn good. Not much power from LF or CF, but power isn't Pod's job anyway. Fat boy is getting the job done in the pen. I think more important than ERA for a closer is WHIP (1.11) and AVG (.221). That'll do. The rest of the pen is pretty respectable. Buehrle & Garcia have struggled, but Garland has improved of late (he couldn't get any worse!) But more important for the 2nd half is the mighty Mariners wiping out those east coast teams who think they're getting a few days off. We can dream!

Ever since I finally picked a 12 foot cable with a mini-headphone jack on one end and RCAs on the other for 6 bucks and plugged my laptop into the stereo's unused tape jack, I find myself listening to internet radio much more frequently. It's very cool to hear you and other internet broadcasts thru the stereo as nature intended. Should have done this a long time ago, and I highly recommend it to other folks with laptops.

And in another month or so I might be able to fit into them again. Have a super day Jazz Kat!

Maximize your utility! -
Someone with a pet tiger perhaps? I used to read our local freecycle mainly for entertainment. Lots of young hippies posting things like "hey man can any1 gimme a car?????" It is a good service though. Great way to find homes for old National Geographics, bags of wine corks, beat up chairs, you name it.

Well just the other day I overheard someone was wondering if fries came with the fish & chips order at the fish market. I gave my copy of At Ease to my sister when she 1st started chemo. Figured it couldn't hurt. She recovered nicely btw, so maybe it even helped. It will be good to get this one back, perhaps even improved! (Had no complaints about how the regular OJC sounded.)
