Barry Bonds passing Babe Ruth HR record
Quincy replied to Tjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
#44 on the mound (Al Downing), #44 at the plate (Aaron), and the ump's # was...ta duh, 44. Can't really work out as nicely with Bonds vs. the Dodgers as backup catcher Sandy Alomar's # is 25 (same as Bonds). No idea what the umpire crews #s are. There is a reliever with the #44 though, to bring it all back home as it were. So Moose, you must not have been that poor (disturbed) guy who shot his wife because she made him take out the trash during the game and he missed the HR. Pretty sure that isn't an urban legend, or at least not the "net" kind. -
I think your "just" is misplaced. Generally speaking ligament & tendon injuries are harder to come back from and take more time than broken bones. Breaks in the wrist can be tricky though given all of the little bones involved. It's a wonder the darn things work at all.

That is mighty tempting. Strange how appealing it would be to watch 7 games of guys wearing black shoes with polish on them. I noticed there's a best of Busch Stadium set too. <Sniff sniff, wipes a tear> There are all sorts of possibilities with these sets. One featuring the Mustache Gang could be fun. So do they really use the original broadcasters on these? As in Curt Gowdy for the '75 Series. That's a huge draw. When they use fake announcers on some of the highlight discs I've seen it tends to lessen the experience.

Blue Note, Blue Note, BN, Conn, RVG, Blue Note, Collectors Choice
Quincy replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's an easy comfort zone to fall into when in the early stages of getting into jazz. You can bounce around from Morgan as leader, Morgan on the side, meet "new" musicians to love from those sessions, so on & so forth. Plus you have those lovely b&w photo sessions. (Damn, thinking about them makes me hungry for a cigarette and I quit 5 or 6 years ago.) Here's one that will cause many of you to whack your forehead and scream "what a putz," but when I was in my early 20s I'd see those b&w spines on the Original Jazz Classics and think something was suspicious because the discs were a little bit cheaper. Original Jazz Classics sounded like the K-Tel label to me. I thought that it must be some sort of knock-off inferior compilation label. I avoided it and bought Columbia & Impulse! instead (since the only jazz artists in the universe were Miles & Coltrane.) Finally I ran into a book or magazine article somewhere and figured it was a legit label. Pretty bright college boy I was. I'm much better nowadays about spreading my dollars & interests around, but I will admit Blue Note can still be a draw. My fairly recent Mosaic purchases had been the H.R.S. & the Capitol boxes, but the last time around the top 2 for consideration were the Parlan & and the Turrentine. Couldn't help myself, and I bought the Turrentine btw. No apologies and I know none were asked for, and doggone it, it's beautiful music. -
Once the '70s rolled around (if not a bit before) he was very self-deprecating about his lack of proficiency. In fact, the more pills in him the more likely he was to slur jokes about how he couldn't play. It was cool to wear one for a few songs, just not all as there was karate moves to do. I've heard at least one show from later in his career where he jokes that he only knows one chord and how he's been foolin y'all for all this time. Criticizing Elvis's guitarmanship seems really silly though. Kinda missing the point of who he was.

Boy I'll say! Sure it's early, but the guy is on pace to hit 86 doubles! The record is 67 by Red Sox Earl Webb in 1931. I love doubles hitters. And the fact he's playing 2nd base for you too is a highly valuable extra (he did a wee bit of that for Florida last year I see. I wasn't aware of that.) Quite the turnaround from last season and the post-trade murmurings. I don't think Lowell has played an inning away from third base. In fact, even as Loretta was slumping horribly, Tito has hardly given the guy a day off and started Alex Cora. Oops, sorry. I was looking at his stats from Yahoo which are intended for fantasy players. Since he played a few games at 2b last year they list him as a 2b/3b. D'oh! I forgot that they did that, and was thinking that this was a bold Boston move. I looked up his fielding stats for last year and saw that he played a few at 2nd, but forgot to check if he really was playing 2nd some this year. Oh well, he's doubling all over the place!

They said they shipped mine Friday. Usually Mosaic shipping is really fast. Guess not these days, still ain't got it. What method do they ship now? It could just be your discs are up against a motherlode of Mother's Day gifts.

Hee hee. What Jim said (the not quoted as well.) Though I can't think of specifics there are 1 or 2 Blue Note hard bop dates where the conga presence makes me roll my eyes, as if they're tacked on as an afterthought. At least I think there are...maybe my opinion would change during another listening. On the other side of the spectrum, I can't imagine Fred Anderson's The Missing Link without Adam Rudolph's percussion. Yeah, a lot more than just congas in the mix that are adding to the listening pleasure, but they are certainly a part of it. It seems like each time I listen to that album I think that I should try to track down more albums with him on them but I too quickly forget. Such is the fate of the too quickly forgotten percussionist!

The '50s box that Chuck mentions will take care of you nicely & then some. It's worth it for the first 1/2 of the last disc of rarities alone. Unfortunately it's no longer on yourmusic, but the Amazon prices are far less than what I paid for mine years ago. Barring that you could go for either Elvis '56 or instead pick up his 1st 2 albums (Elvis Presley & Elvis.) I'll leave it to you to figure out the 1 or 3 song difference. Throw in Elvis At Sun Record Company and Loving You and you've got most of the meat from the beginning. After that you'll probably have to have some overlap with a compilation or 2 to get the last few scraps. All of these single discs can be had yourmusic.com. The big '50s box includes the Christmas Album as well if that is an additional draw, though that can also be gotten separately at yourmusic too. Or....Elvis Golden Records and 50,000,000 Million Fans plus the Elvis At Sun Record Co. will probably do it as well. I guess it comes down to whether your dad is a singles guy or has some love for some of the album tracks. Yes, there are a lot of choices in Elvisland.

Not sure about taking over the vault, but at least they'll be releasing music from it via the DPs and other releases. (Sorry, don't mean to get picky on the semantics, though who knows, maybe they will.) Hunter's diary from 5/1 had the following entry: "Based on ignorance born of secrecy, it's my perception that DNC is in a holding pattern, DeadNet being stone broke (which is why the opening page hasn't been fixed - slow modems: try www.deadnetcentral.com) and awaiting transfer, or so I understand, to Rhino Records which, so I hear from the grapevine, may market our music, including subsequent Dick's Picks, if negotiations work out. I understand they're not a bad lot and want to administer it as righteously as they can. How righteous that might be remains to be seen. Quite a job of cat herding involved. " Click here for link to full entry I've heard early July mentioned as the time of transfer but don't know how accurate that is. I would hope they have some things ready to go once the magic date arrives. Now we know why they wouldn't take our money on the 11/09-11/73 box when the link leaked out.

I rarely order from Amazon but a couple of months ago I had a gift certificate and needed another 65 cents on the order to get the free shipping. So I remembered this Ivry Gitlis rec and added it to the order. I've forgotten now what the "meat" of the order was as this throw in so outshined them. And it's not just the Bartok, the Mendelssohn, Sibelius and the rest is strong stuff. At roughly $12 it's like when you buy an inexpensive wine and it tastes like $30 (not that I drink the latter much. ) Thanks!

The problem is to find "decent" CD-Rs. I have had problems with dozens of Fuji CD-Rs burned in 2002-2003 that have become partly unreadable by now. At the time, I thought Fuji was a renowned brand that offered decent CD-Rs Same story here with Sonys. Fuji & Sony were only considered decent if they were made in Japan (and therefore by Taiyo Yuden.) Around 2002 many Fujis were made in Taiwan and thus weren't Taiyo Yudens. The same thing happened to Sony a few years before that. Because I got tired of running around town and reading the fine print I've been ordering TYs online for several years. Regarding CD-R life, I have discs from a spindle of Taiwanese TDKs that I got for free in 2001 that are now are cigarette stained yellow on the top (and I don't smoke nor does anyone in the house, cat included.) They play fine, but most have problem spots that can't be read. Or at least EAC in secure mode wants to take a week to do the job. Lucky for me about half of them went out to others in trades.

Miles Davis - The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions
Quincy replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Doesn't seem that much of anything is available at Your Music or BMG these days but we can always hope. Yeah, not the right label for yourmusic me thinks. But heck, imagine being a Miles beginner and having yourmusic. You could have a massive amount of Columbia for a pittance of what I paid for mine! -
Why do all the members of "they" have to be thinking alike anyway? Could it be that some were trying to save themselves by trying to take control of the aircraft, while others figured they were probably going to die anyway, so why not prevent it from hitting some target, that while unknown presumably would be in the league of the trade towers. Why assign a single motive to a group like that?

Last night I was stuck and decided to let the cat pick something out. Held her up and she put her paw on Kind Of Blue. Sheeeesh, that's why the album always heads up the "best" lists - peoples' pets are picking it! Then I realized she was also pawing Olympia Theater 3-21-60. Hmmm, okay kitty, I need to give you more credit with your picks. Filed under Miles but just as easily could be filed under Coltrane. Hadn't played it in a year or so. Whew, those guys were pretty good!

I read accounts of what happened so I'll stick with the horrors as I imagine how it took place. I don't need a movie version of it.

Good & Bad News: aka, Where is my account!?
Quincy replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
This time when I pass Hank Aaron, I'm going to post 756 in the baseball thread! Sorry 'bout your headache Jim. I hate those oopsie-shi... moments, but the beast is up and running again. Thank ya! -
Seems like a valid point, but there are always people who come late to the party. For example, as of a year ago, my jazz collection consisted of a few Miles albums, and a few Coltrane albums. Am I looking in the mirror? I have a few years head start on you but not that many, and yup, that's where my jazz collection started too (as it does for many.) Once I got going there were still too many "basics" too pick up one disc at a time than to jump right into Mosaics. There are continually new people coming to the party. Hooray hooray! I'm telling ya, if we could convince Mosaic to give just a nickel a disc that came their way from organissimo it might be an amount one shouldn't sneeze at. Nice post Jeffrey.

Well I'll be durned, good to see ya. Not to put you over the edge, but you might want to take along George R. Stewart's Earth Abides for reading material. If it's as bad as you fear, it may give some helpful pointers.

Invention: The TV-advertisement enforcer
Quincy replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If I switched from dsl to a cable modem, I'd then go ahead & get cable tv. But that probably won't happen unless they slash prices on the cable side. That's a team worth paying for! We get a few Blazer games for free, and I'm not sure they're worth that. Amen! If they had ala carte I would hooked on long ago. Instead I spend the money on CDs. Not a bad trade. -
Invention: The TV-advertisement enforcer
Quincy replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Nope. I'm the last person on earth who hasn't gotten cable or a dish. Unless perhaps there's a small tribe of others out there... I just refuse to pay for it. I do rent the HBO shows on DVD, but otherwise, even though I'm a sports fan, to hell with it. -
So you spell your name funny, that's OK. Cruise & Shields reproduce on your day - what a gift!
