It's the annual birthday thread for Jim R!
Quincy replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Annual event eh? I'm still working on the story problem served up by Big Al, but I think the answer is ! -
Leap-A really was something of a joke. It required the admin password to activate, and then when it activated it didn't do much. It's really more of a trojan than a virus. And anytime a "virus" requires the admin password to do something, well, it kind of takes the sting out of it. However, there is a more dangerous threat out there with Safari. Arstechnica article The workaround highlighted: "Right now, the only workaround for Safari users is to uncheck the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" option in Safari preferences. Safari is the only Mac OS X browser affected, so users of Camino and Firefox as well as WebKit-using browser such as OmniWeb and Shiira are safe. Another option is moving Terminal out of /Applications/Utilities so that absolute paths inserted into scripts won't work."

I thought he was dead about 15 years ago or so because there's a stretch of the freeway named for him in Wyoming. For some reason highways are more likely to named after the living, so when later I found out he wasn't dead it was a happy occasion! His pairing with Tony Kubek from the Game Of The Week days is still my favorite announcing team . Thank ya Mr. Gowdy.

There's a lot to like. 2 of my favorite songs are "Bird Song" and the full "Weather Report Suite." If you want the former it goes away for a spell right around the time the latter enters the setlist. If my memory is right the 2 (and I'm not counting stand alone "Let It Grow(s)") songs were only played in the same concert twice, and each time it was a horn show. My favorite period is almost a 3 way tie between: Fall '72. As you note there's a rawness there. Those big powerful thumping "Other Ones," the Playings are tripped out 20+ minute stompers, and you get those gorgeous Bird Songs. Plenty more to love too. A small thing but I also like the original version of Black Throated Wind which got it start in '72. '73 - Lose the rawness and gain spacieness. The new songs are some of my favorites. EYES!, Here Comes Sunshine, other good stuff from Wake of the Flood and enter Weather Report Suite. Any year that adds Eyes to the mix plus WRS has got to be contender, plus some great Dark Stars that year (never mind the DS>Eyes>Stellas!) Oh, and also the Playin' sandwich makes its 1st appearance too (Playin>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playin'.) '74 - For a few years I was convinced this was my favorite year. June is certainly my favorite month. The China > Riders never sounded better and most shows have a WRS too. The Caution jams, Spanish jams, Mind Left Body jams...ah, it's the closest thing musically to swimming in a warm ocean to me! Those are the big 3, but I also love Europe '72, early & late '71 namely for Pigpen's non-rap songs (Easy Wind, Hard To Handle) and of course '69. When I listen to '70 I often wonder why I don't do so more often. Going the other direction I can easily bask in the sunshine of '77, especially May or fall. "Brown Eyed Women" in May is just crazy - a lot energy put into that song. The 2nd sets with the different Eyes/Estimated/Playin'/Terrapin/Comes A Time/Scarlet>Fire combos (see 5/4/77) show why so many love this year. Some of Jan & Feb '78 might be the best of all, at least based on the Mac Ct. show from 1/22 and DP 18 discs 2 & 3. Fall/winter of '79 might the best stuff with Brent, and is mighty darn good vs. the whole history. Love the acoustic Warfield/Radio City stuff from '80. And to date myself (both hands are on the keyboard) there are those rare moments when I actually want to hear "Hell In A Bucket" & "West LA Fadeaway." Not very often compared to the rest, but that's my pre-30s period so ole nostalgia plays a part for sure. Then I remember the heavy use of MIDI and I get over it.

whoa! Where did that come from? growing up in Canada, I knew maybe two, three people who were "stoners". I see a LOT more young people doing that here in Michigan than I ever was aware of in Canada The lil' Pocket World In Figures that The Economist gives subscribers each year. And you need to check out the west side of Canada. 15 Year Olds Who Have Tried Cannabis In The Past Year (Europe & N. America only, 2001-02.) Males, % 1. O Canada - 43.3 2. Switzerland - 40.3 3. USA! USA! - 36.5 4. UK - 36.3 5. GREENLAND - 36.1 6. Spain - 31.6 7. France - 31.2 8. Czech Rep - 30.9 9. Slovenia - 27.3 Females, % 1. Canada - 37.5 2. Switzerland - 35.3 3. UK - 31.7 4. GREENLAND - 31.1 5. Spain - 30.0 6. USA - 26.2 7. France - 23.8 8. Czech Rep - 23.2 9. Slovenia - 21.4 It appears that Greenland is aptly named! Poor kids, it's a big island with nothin' to do but watch the glaciers melt. There is a difference between trying it young vs. embracing the stoner "lifestyle." And also, though everyone I know jokes about the snowboarder events being included "to give something for the stoners to watch," the Olympic athletes themselves don't get to partake due to testing. So in a way it's unfair to label the sport as such, though from what I see around here with the kids who snowboard there's a good reason for the stereotype.

Snowboarding doesn't really favor the US much vs. the rest of the skiing countries. In fact, if you associate snowboarding with young stoners Canada & Switzerland are at a significant advantage over the US (more young people try pot in these skiing countries. Of course you can't toke & ski in the Olympics.) Short track speed skating has been great for China, S. Korea & Canada. Events added in 2002 included additions to the biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and more short track speed skating. The biathlon has never been the US's bag. Neither has cross-country. Ice dancing was introduced in 1976. No US gold medals but 6 for Soviet Union or Russia combined. As far as the summer games, the great American game of baseball was taken away. So I don't see much of a US conspiracy there, though I could be missing a few. I can't stand the mogul events, but that's cause it makes my knees hurt. But put me down for snowboard cross!

One case where the answer really is "9-11." Horns on the rarely played "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away" and the "Weather Report Suite" (all parts.) Then they go away. Yay! The highlight has gotta be the Dark Star > Morning Dew. There's a section of maybe 7 to 10 minutes straddling the 2 songs where the board is replaced with an audience patch. While that bothers some people I actually don't mind it as you can hear the crowd going nuts, especially during the opening notes of "Dew."

Horace Silver's The Jody Grind. And what Sal said!

I hope they wa®sh your belly button afterwards. You must have an "innie." Good luck. Hope it's like getting the tonsils out and they prescribe ice cream!

This is really stupid. And here I thought John was going to speak up for '73 & '74. Actually the most popular is something entitled "funny rat." I think the old babe thread was bigger. It was truly a courageous response to the cold harsh nature of reality if there ever was one! I'm sorry to say I can think of 2 1/2. Two are lawyers and 1 is applying to law school.
-
Ah, well sorry 'bout that. I thought I had read over at Hoffman that it was just one. Course I don't have Essential, and I don't have Riot on CD...so that'll teach me to respond to a thread about 2 things I don't know about. (Usually I try to limit myself to one I don't know about.)
-
That's very true. Unfortunately I've known a couple of people (OK, idiots) who don't play Riot at all because they can't tolerate the sound of the CD. (It's not that bad...sheeeesh.) But if one is really picky get the comp, find a copy of Riot and reburn a Riot from the comp and the one leftover song. Or maybe there's an iTunes option for the orphan Riot song. Things were easier when there was just the LP!

The past 2 nights I listened to discs 2 & 3 of the Sidney Bechet Mosaic Select. These 2 are loaded with multiple takes. Last night I wasn't in the mood, so I kept the remote nearby and hit >>| to skip past the alternates. Tonight I played every track, and other than one or two takes was enthralled by the differences (highly recommend the set by the way.) As I'm usually too lazy to program the player, it's not that hard to keep the remote nearby and click by 'em when you don't want to hear them. Though it was nice to get rid of the problem with Waltz For Debby once & for all with the Evans Complete Village Vanguard sets and get the 3 discs in order. So do the harddrive people have a quick & easy "skip alts" choice in their programming menu?

Riot is one of those that gets complaints from people who don't even hang out at the Steve Hoffman forum. However, the gang over there is generally pleased with the sound quality of the 2 disc Essential. You'll lose 1 song from Riot but gain a whole lot more. Perhaps the thing to do would be to sign up at yourmusic.com and get it for 11.98 (with free shipping.) If you end up truly loving Riot then you can track down the vinyl, or maybe they'll do a good job of mastering after the mohawk Grammy appearance.

That's been tried here. 2 guys started up a vegetarian sandwich & wrap shop that sold fruit smoothies. Came up with a comic book blender character and their place was neatly decorated, sorta like Willy Wonka's set when you first walk into the factory. They sold private placement stock in hopes of turning it into a big franchise. Lasted a few years but eventuallly it died. Might have been the cost of higher quality organic ingredients, but I think the real reason is that people like sugar & fat!

I agree with Sundog. Plus for those of us who like to get as close to the next shipping rate bracket without going over, it will be easier to add "just one more bite" without exceeding it. Great news! The orphans now will have homes.

What does this mean? Is there something actually printed on the cover that says that? Can you post an image? My CDUniverse package doesn't arrive until tomorrow.... Yes, it is actually printed in white on the cover. I have no idea what that means. Could be that the number in the red oval dot next to Blue Note is different. An LP version I have has 84080 in the dot. The photo on Amazon (if it's right) the number is 37771. Yeah, sorry I wasn't paying attention to the full message. I just seemed too friggin' weird to think that they would release a cover with the to come part. I saw it in person today & thought it was just so sad. When I first heard the word "retouched" I was wondering if they had removed his cigarette. D'oh - missed Man With Golden Arm's joke about that!

What he said. I heard the "Morning Dew" from this on the GD Hour one night while driving home, and I just about had to stop the car. They really ought to put warning labels on some of these releases. I try to reserve shows like this for longer drives, preferably driving through someplace semi-desolate in the western US, lest I get to caught up in the "trip."

Texas tenor players KICK ASS
Quincy replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Look at the 1st sentence of the first post for King Curtis. For Mr. Tate, the 3rd sentence of the 1st post. Sort of the preamble to the list I guess. -
I heard it playing at a cd shop a few months ago and thought it was a Neutral Milk Hotel that I hadn't heard. Then I saw the disc on the "now playing" display. I know it doesn't matter, but man for some reason I really hate the band name.

I still just have a videotape of the laserdisc. Might be more than you want to know, but here's a link comparing the different flavors of the DVD. Might take awhile to load even with a fast connection. DVD Beaver Strangelove comparsion

Love "Being There." I last saw it about 7 years ago and thought it was even better. Given the state of politics and the way people sup on TV I'm sure I'll think the same thing next time. "The Mouse That Roured" is a fun one. As with Strangelove you get to see him play multiple parts. I too wasn't that fond of "The Party" or a couple of other late '60s/early '70s ones, but hey, he's forgiven for all of the great movies he was in. "The Ladykillers" is very silly fun too.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it, especially after hearing how different 9-29-94 is to Broadway & the Deja VROOOM DVD (plus a double trio boot I have.) The last order of kcccs ended up being Mainz, D'Agde and the P1 Jazz Cafe (passed on Zoom '72 this go 'round.) Love 'em all, with the '82 being the one I have to be careful not to overplay. Unless I flame out on my Crimson jag I anticipate another order before springtime including Heidelberg '74, Philly '82 and the new double trio release. And the Zoom '72 and a few other releases are in contention - maybe I need to bump it to 4 discs rather than the usual 3 at a time. Never mind a couple of downloads I have my eyes on too. There's something about Zappa & Crimson where when you're into them, you're really into them and there are few substitutes. (Perhaps "you" should be substituted with "I.") It's more relative now in that other music gets played too as opposed to when I was younger, but lately Crimson is certainly a leader as there's almost always a daily dose (or every other day) of some sort of Frippery. Surprising how well it goes with Teagarden & Bix as it did today. It seems like each time I come out of Crimson (2 or 3 month) hibernation my love for the band grows stronger. I'm really looking forward to what they do next!, but in the meantime I'll happily enjoy the downloads & kcccs. Yup, I especially love where they string 'em together (both old & new instrumentals, as the old ones became "new.") The high quality of the 9-29-94 recording (duh, along with the performance) makes it a delight to hone in on who is doing what...though I have trouble concentrating on one member for too long as I easily get swept away by the band. Damn, Tony Levin on (now playing) "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream" is something else!

Nostalgia when the setlist from the last tour was often 60+% songs from the past 2 albums or 3 years? They've done a pretty good job about trying new things over the years, especially with their (apologies for the spelling) ProjeKcts. I don't think they're ready for Branson yet (or Branson ready for them.)
