I'll go ahead and get the Bechet fairly soon as I'm really in the mood for it and grab the Tolliver too (and pick up the $5 Jazztimes subscription.) It's easier to say the Selects I have rather than don't: Moncur, Jones, Reece, Pullen & Pepper. I like 'em all very much. Some of the ones that have gotten heavy consideration are Green, Weston, and Amy. Chambers & Brookmeyer somewhat...heck, nearly all of them I've thought about getting. Heh, maybe I should let Malcom be the tiebreaker. I have a fair amount of Dexter and though I wouldn't mind the Select figure money might be better spent picking up a few more Steeplechase & OJC titles that I don't have instead. Oh yeah, and then there's the Hill... However, there are other big boxes I'm very interested in, possibly more so. So maybe I'll step up my Mosaic purchases by ordering a box set & add a Select a few times before July rolls around. And if I miss a few, I'm sure the titles will still be worth it after the increase.

I'm pretty sure I hear roast beef on Tanya. He's been known to do fried bananas too.

How wonderfully civilized Copenhagen is. Along with his playing I love to hear him talk. Oh if you have the time, please do! We'd love to hear more.

I love that feeling! Sounds like a grrrrrrrrreat show by the way, congratulations! Of course, you will see another show someday.

Happy Birthday Meester Moose!

Oh, I know what you mean, but "Naima" gorgeous. Maybe avoid like the common cold rather than the plague, depending on how adverse one is to string sections. There's also some guitar work on one of the tracks that makes me think of white suits. Not that that's necessarily a good thing. The Black Lions or 1201 Music discs (however you can find them) are great too. As the former incarnation can be tricky to find I hope 1201 keeps reissuing titles.

I thought it was nice of them to give us plenty of warning about the increase on the older ones. I have some catchin' up to do.

Thomas Fitzgerald has a review of sub-$1000 notebooks in the New York Times. I've had a 12 inch iBook for 3 years now and love it. It handles some MS compatibility issues better than my PC. You can subtract the cost of virus software from its price when comparing vs. a PC.

Well that's because I still don't believe it's shipping. In fact, I'm suspicious that all of the posts above claiming that it is shipping, along with posters saying that they have it in their hands is all fabricated. Not just the posts, but the ultimate setup of all by Sony/BMG/Miles's nephew is that the posters themselves have been created, all the better to fool me into thinking this thing will be at my door on December 27, 2005. Well you aren't going to fool me again. This is the most elaborate sting in the history of the music business, a conspiracy years in the making. Not until I play all 6 discs (heck, they might slip 6 discs of Chris Botti in there instead) will I believe I have it. Um, actually I'm really looking forward to it! But it really is hard to believe it's finally happening...if indeed it is.

I just saw one jazz show last year. Stanko in Eugene the day after you saw him. Fantastic! Nothing finer than catching a Polish jazz band on St. Patrick's Day! Eric

Is it too early for a baseball hot stove Thread???

A Giant going to the Dodgers? Gasp. (That one has been done quite a few times - both ways.) -

On the other hand plenty of players gave their careers to teams only to be traded away or tossed aside like yesterday's garbage. Some had skills that had diminished like Eddie Mathews or Jim Rice. But take Willie McCovey, who was traded away at 35 and still put together 3 seasons of more than 20 homers (the Giants did bring him back later of course.) Or Dwight Evans, who played 19 years for the Red Sox and wanted to stay, still had something to offer (as evidenced by a .390 OBP the following season) but was released by the Sox. He was one of those older players hit by the shrinking "middle class" in baseball, and so saving some money over loyalty to a long-time player was the deciding factor for ownership. I think it's great that players now have some say in their destiny. If they want to sign for less for the old home team that's fine, but on the other hand there's enough evidence to suggest there won't be much in the way of sentimentality from ownership so it's hard for me to begrudge them too much when they sign for money. -
The game is still going on, but at one point Kobe had 62 points and Dallas had 66. Needless to say Kobe has no assists at the moment.

I only know some of Merritt's work but he sure is impressive. He has been known to write a few songs about love.* Agree too about Hank Sr. rating high, even if he just misses the cutoff. I was just spinning a couple of live shows of his last night. *For those who don't know, his group put out a 3 disc set called "69 Love Songs."

WOO HOO! A new #1 in the queue! My next one ships on 25th. Well, maybe not this month. If I find it drags initially I'll follow Mr. Russell's ideas for resequencing. Might be a new #2. Thanks all for these updates.

Maybe some wires are crossed here - Spontooneous seems to be talking about GD Live, an independent site that hosts music files; Quincy seems to be talking about the official DeadNet site. Spontoon, GD Live does seem to be having some problems; no one seems able to reach it over the past few days. Temporary, I hope. Oh, sorry 'bout that. Gdogus is right, I thought you were talking about the official site as someone just yesterday asked me if I was having problems with that one. Trouble ahead, trouble behind! I've read about GD Live problems on rec.music.gdead. No one has been able to get on for days (just as Gdogus says.) One or two doomsayers noted that archive.org acted the same way before soundboards were pulled. I'm not trying to feed any conspiracy, just passing on the posts of worried minds.

What did you listen to the most in 2005?
Quincy replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jack Teagarden - Father of Jazz Trombone (Avid compilation) Sonny Rollins - On Impulse (Had it for years but love the opener.) Don Byas - the 2 Jazz In Paris releases (I "discovered" him this year.) Art Pepper - Mosaic Select (Reading Straight Life so he's getting played as the soundtrack.) Coleman Hawkins - At Ease With Coleman Hawkins (Ahhhhhhhhh.) Thelonious Monk - London Collection Vol. 1 (Finally got it this year.) Monk/Coltrane - Carnegie Hall Dexter Gordon - Body & Soul (I just keep pulling it out.) Metheny/Coleman - Song X (Lots of Ornette played this year.) King Crimson - Great Deceiver box Some artists where I played a variety of albums but didn't fixate on one: Duke Ellington - All sorts of things from the '20s to the '70s. Hank Mobley - '50s Mosaic to the '60s. I think I played all 13 discs I have this year. Jackie McLean - As leader or sideman. And Mosaic sets that were dipped into often: Django, Gerald Wilson, & HRS. The Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions just arrived & is dominating currently! In honor of Sundog's special listings: Most listened to Miles album/set Seven Steps box Miles album most listened to that was not reissued this year Walkin' Coltrane album most listened too if I wasn't cheap & forgetful The new Birdland release. Gotta replace (or compliment, add to) the boot! -
Even with a high speed connection the site can be slow. It takes at least 20 to 30 seconds after the lightning bolt fills up for the page to load in the 2 times I've visited. The response can be slow and weird when clicking things. It doesn't seem to respond to keyboard controls for scrolling. The autumnal backdrop was somewhat unusual as like crows, Deadheads tend to prefer shiny and more colorful things. That'll convert ya alright. Dick's Pick 11 & 14 both include shows with the unusual leadoff Dews. Terrific!

I don't know about that. I mean, there is no Queen Kong on the island is there? The poor fellow is pretty hard up, so if he has to settle for an under 6 foot lovely starlet, so be it. Genetically she's closer than the big spider or dinosaurs. Presumably his mother is dead so at least we don't have to go there. And not to go too far off into the unsettling area of zoophilia, there are many cases where domestic animals show sexual attraction to their human companions. I've known people who own birds who receive a courtship dance when it's that time of the year for their male bird. I think we've all run across someone's dog that acted inappropriately or have heard other stories. Maybe it depends upon how rural your upbringing was. As far as humans being sexually attracted to animals, studies throw out numbers anywhere from 1-2% of the population to a whopping 8-10%. Yowsa, that latter number is hard to believe! Given that the original was made when America was a more agrarian country... OK, enough of that. I've never been sure that it's a 2 way street between the 2, but the finger sniffing is a bit of a tip off regarding the big guy. I don't blame Jackson for wanting to get that out of the way (if only David Lynch had had a crack at the remake ), but it certainly adds a certain something to the original and even the lesser 2nd sequel. -

Apparently he and Mia have a home in Manhattan Beach, so the Dodgers have the inside track. Marriage sure changes things! -
Oh cut that out! It's taken a great deal of strength not to hit download since I've played the one I just downloaded. Seriously, I really was thinking of Xmas day to download Ashbury, but now I think I'll make a reward for finishing up with holiday shopping. How's that for a carrot! That caught my eye, especially from a value perspective. I have the KCCC Broadway release and a boot from the '95 tour. Also the DVD. The rawness does sound interesting. I've looked at the 2000 offerings as well, though with at least one of them they downplay the quality of some of the songs. No one has piped up to review them either. I thought I read in Robert's diary that a recent soundscape would be available for downloading soon. I'm fairly certain I'd jump on that. Actually the live site has reminded me that there are 3 or 4 KCCCs that I'd like to pick up. Perhaps sometime in January I'll place an order as the music creats a great deal of heat to blast the winter cold away!

As a reward for getting the presents mailed off that require that, I treated myself to a download. Pretty simple process and they provide good instructions. I used Azureus instead of their recommended torrent program and of course it didn't matter. I think they suggest the official BitTorrent program to ease their support role. I grabbed March 31, 1974 and lemme tell ya, it's a good one! The 2nd improv alone makes it a keeper. Sound quality is excellent. It's got me playing some of the KCCCs I haven't played in a few months (though I've been dipping into the Great Deceiver box at least once a month since summer.) I do believe I'll succumb and pick up the top download of June 28, 1974 Ashury Park later on. Heck, maybe even on Christmas Day. Ah the beauty of downloads. I do want to explore more modern incarnations too, and more from the Projekcts. What a great site! What a dangerous place!

These birthdays are making me thirsty! Have a great one!

An exception to that rule would by Paul Molitor who finally at the age of 34 stayed free of injuries the rest of the way (well, maybe a minor one years later.) So that's Nomar's hope. But I too am suspicious of his ability to be a top guy free of injuries. Hope I'm wrong about that. I too recall ESPN associating Nomar with 'roids. Nowadays anytime a ligament snaps the theory is that the muscle was too built up for the ligament to handle it. So there you go - GUILTY! without a wee wee test. Though I can't remember the season in question, it was also noted how he showed up at spring training one year much more muscular. We couch potatoes all know that's a crime. -
Cheap & used is the best way to get it (that's how I got mine.) Of the late '80s and beyond videos I think it's the best musically (haven't seen/heard the VFV II or Buffalo), but weirdly enough the video quality is kind of grainy. Just a poor transfer I guess. But the "Deal" is a scorcher. While that may not be the first song you look for in a Dead setlist as a highlight, it really is a ripping one thanks to Jerry. Jerry appears happy and dare I say he sorta moves a little too. No Townshend windmills or leaps, but he moves a few times.
