The cduniverse.com price is $22.89 per box not including shipping. (I believe you add $5 for the first title & then $1 per additional title.) For whatever reason it was sometimes possible to get the individual Jazz In Paris releases for inexpensive prices ($4.99 to 5.99) over here in the US. Again, not all the time or everywhere, but aside from the Dusty Groove blowout there were other times where if you could find the discs they were inexpensive. What is remarkable about the box sets is that unlike some of the individual releases the discs tend to have more minutes of music, plus there's the terrific book as well. So the pricing is pretty fantastic. Froogle only kicks out 2 other places selling the set. The high price is $27.99, the low $22.49. Sounds like we're very lucky over here in the states! OK, it's late at night and I've been drinking Petite Sirah. Time to pick up the other 2 sets!

Try before you buy in October. The May 5th show is on dimeadozen. As of an hour ago there were over 700 on it. Probably 1000 in another couple of hours.

The boxes truly are wonderful. I wasn't expecting them to come in 10" boxes either. I bought the last 2 and when I opened one of the cases in "Rive Gauche" there wasn't a disc in it. Uh oh. No problem, CDUniverse is sending me a whole 'nother box set and I can still keep the other one. I'm probably going to order the other 2 as I'm so impressed with the books and the sequencing of the discs, plus buy a couple of extra sets as gifts. Even at the current price of $23 plus shipping they seem to be worth more than that given the classy packaging. It's the perfect gift for someone who wants to keep her French skills up to snuff and also enjoys jazz.

Thanks Clem for pushing it over the top! I just ordered Vol. 3 & 4. I'll get a little overlap from the single issues but not too much. Color pics will take some getting used to but I'll manage.

Eggs-zackly! I've been $5.99 the whole time and happy as a clam, cockle, and other happy mollusks. Regarding the joys of media mail, I just had a disc (Djangos) that took 7 weeks to travel from Iowa to Oregon. A new record for one that actually arrived.

.... Jeez she really does look like my missus on that pic. Just holds the mic differently. edited for spoolingh Careful now... She is only 17. I believe the age of consent in the U.K. (minus Northern Ireland where it's 17) is 16. So lust away.

I got mine used through Django's and thought I would be getting the more famous album by that name. After all, that's what the picture suggested, and pictures don't lie. I kept it though as I like it for the same reasons that Marcello states. I was a little disappointed that I still didn't have the "real" Sweet Rain and figured that any future online attempts to purchase it might result in getting more copies of the live Sweet Rain instead. But as luck would have it the next week I bought the LP at a record convention for $4.

For my own selfish reasons I like the way things are now. If I want to see a "big name" jazz performer like Wayne Shorter, I can get front row tickets for $50 (or perhaps even a few dollars less.) Less famous performers such as Thomasz Stanko can be seen for half that. It's such great deal for the ticket buyer compared to many rock shows. Now if I want to see a big name critically acclaimed rock act (whether over the hill or not), I'm probably paying anywhere from $75 to what, $150 or even more? (This is hypothetical as I have yet to pay that for a show.) Of course many bands can't charge that much, but even the less popular indie/rock/whatever rock genre can usually charge more than many jazz acts can. I mean if the B-52s can charge $59 for the Britt Fest this summer, well, sheeeeesh, that's crazy. If demand is behind those higher prices, then let's keep jazz our little secret.

The best/your favorite year in rock?
Quincy replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's hard to pick just one as I love the guitar/improv bands of the early '70s along with the punk of the late seventies and indie or the early/mid '80s. For seeing groups in concert I'd pick '73. Crimson, Grateful Dead, Stones, Zeppelin, and see for myself how disastrous one of The Who's Quadrophenia shows could be. Or 2 or 3! Plus Bob Marley w/ Bunny & Peter, The Faces, Zappa, Van Morrison, and some interesting line ups for Neil Young. But for albums...I guess I'll go with '68. Not the best Who release that year (Magic Bus in the US) but they played a mean show at the Fillmore. Some of the releases you get are Beggar's Banquet, Village Green, the White Album, and Electric Ladyland. But what put it over the top for me was Notorious Byrd Brothers & Sweetheart of The Rodeo. I could easily be talked into another year from '65 to '73, or perhaps something from '77 to '84. -
You can get it from alldirect.com for $104.94 and that includes shipping. Oh, and it is in stock too. Phew! I don't have enough Art Pepper but I too am looking for more. For what it's worth (& not much ) I have a few Contemporaries and 1 volume of the Vanguards and love both eras. The Select is next on my list.

Stop reading this thread now Jazz Kat! This is how it starts. You innocently ask a question about a Mosaic, and then you start reading testimonials like the one by John. Then more & more posters continue proclaiming the glorious wonders of this set and that set and the other. Run Jazz Kat run! Before it's too late!

Different reasons for different folks. Some like the fabby packaging. Sometimes the mastering is extra special (ask Wesbed!) Sometimes it's because the material isn't available elsewhere, or at least in print. And sometimes it's the completeness. Here's Hank Mobley's '50s Blue Notes - have at it! Often as not all or most of the above come into play. I wondered the same thing too once upon a time. Then I got the Johnny Hodges set that's still in print. Sounds superb. I mean really really nice, and I'm not an audiophile with wiring that costs more than your car! It can be a great way to seriously dive into a "new" (to you) artist as well. For that I'm grateful for the Gerald Wilson set. Hang around here long enough and I dare you to resist the temptation of Mosaic.

There was so much great stuff. The Who '75 Houston DVD with all the extras. Clash stuff I was never able to get elsewhere. Jazz from Europe just barely a day after it happened. Pere Ubu, just all sorts of things that could be tricky to trade for. Plus you could check the quality & if you didn't like the sound or performance erase it from your drive. The last 2 things I downloaded were the lost Quintet in Stockholm and an '82 Kinks show. Those "band-friendly" sites just don't have that stuff - unless you're into a friendly band. I like some of them, but I already have more Dead than I need. Shucks.

81. Not to be a killjoy, but it didn't ask about family history of Alzheimer's. So I'm subtracting 15 for the mind. Then again, maybe I should subtract 40 for the mind!

Shit, yes it is. What the hell did you do? Seriously, it is there you have to search beyond the last 30 days. D'oh, I had my search set to check the "non-political." Good thing I'm not using sharp instruments. Glad to hear it will be getting the heave ho!
-
It's still around. It wasn't deleted. Catesta just provided the search key, a couple posts above this. Strange, I can't find it anymore. I just assumed as he started the thing maybe he deleted on his way out. If it is indeed gone, how environmental of him to clean up his toxic waste dump.

Would this have to do with his political preferences? It was beyond politics. In the thread that no longer exists very early on he questioned (words to this effect) that maybe there really is an international jewish conspiracy, and then as evidence he listed the names of jews in the Bush administration. Including the ambassador to Uruguay & Denmark, which of course are well known to be incredibly powerful positions for such a conspiracy. My own reaction upon seeing that was it made my stomach turn, but I decided to stop reading his crap, especially as it appeared he was being deliberately obtuse about things in his debate. I figured he was just trolling in a "hotbed" topic and wouldn't stick around long. (Yeah right.) It wasn't until today that I went back to read where he went further on in the thread, and there were more posts that were beyond the realm of mere disagreement about Israeli foreign policy and the like to something that appeared disturbing. It's hard to figure out when you read or hear someone say some of the things he did (Zionism = Nazism fer instance) if it's just stupidity or if there is something rotten to the core. Having dipped further into that thread before lunch I now see why Couw responded the he did. (Actually one didn't have to go far at all into that thread.) Here in the US there is sometimes amongst very bright people a tendency to be tolerant of everyone's opinions. In this case I think this board is a better place for ridding ourselves of the purveyor of Nazi poo, and if being an unforgiving badger helped push him away, then cheers to Couw, Ubu, Allen and the rest for helping to make it possible. -edited to remove a redundant "there."

Me too! Hasn't been played much in the past 20 years compared to the 5 years prior (though a boot from the '73 tour gets played instead.) It was a great album to type term papers to as well - drum along with Moon! My guess is that Bitches Brew would be the most played jazz album.

As long as you keep the young one (or any small animals in the house) away from it. Congrats!

Big Ten - 1976 Indiana beat Michigan in the finals. That was Indiana's undefeated team. Big East finals match up happened in '85 when Villanova beat Georgetown by 2. There may be more, but those two stick out.

Have you considered raising the deductible with your car insurance? Of course if something happens you'll have to pay more out of pocket, but if you ever have a claim you'll have to pay more anyways. If your deductible is less than $500, look into it. Is there any chance you could carpool or share a ride to your school? With gas prices climbing there might be other teachers who might be interested. Consider checking out Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other thrift & used clothing stores. You might be surprised at the quality of things that will pop up. As people are always gaining weight & trying to lose weight many times cloths in excellent condition show up. Good brand name slacks for $5 and the like. There's no shame in looking for bargains. Don't let one or two less than enthusiastic outings to such stores dim you on trying again. Like hunting through the used CD bins, sometimes there won't be much exciting on the racks. Try different types of thrift stores, as some will have better prices and merchandise than others. If things are really tight perhaps you could ask your folks for a loan if you can stomach the thought. Chances are they received help too when they were young. Heck, as much as the thought of moving back with your parents disgusts you, they may fear that happening as well, so they would probably be very happy to help if it means keeping you out of your old room. Good luck and hang in there.

And that's another reason why I went with a handle (aside from being a nobody .) There was already an Eric & there was already a Hutchhead (which is close enough to my last name.) That's a problem when you arrive later to the party - your name belongs to somebody else.

I've gone both ways with posting on the usenet or on forums. But as I've had the misfortune of having what seems like more than my fair share of encounters with psychopaths and stalkers in real life & online, I prefer to use a pseudonym in larger groups or those that can be Googled. I look at this as being somewhat similar to CB radio handles only without all of the lingo. And as Daniel mentioned, through contact with other board numbers sometimes we find out each other's full names. But a real name isn't that important to me. I've bought many albums & attended concerts based on the recommendations of posters who use initials, animal names, and golden armed jazzbos (to quote Monty Burns.) It's the content that matters to me, not whether the name is real or not. But then I grew up near Mark Twain's boyhood home, so maybe that has something to with it. Besides, how do we know you really are Ted O'Reilly?

How To Deal With Unsolicited Annoyances
Quincy replied to rostasi's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Before the do not call registry, I viewed any telemarketer call as a chance to do as I pleased to the person on the other end. Outside of pollsters I just have little sympathy for people who find themselves employed in a job where they know they are annoying people. I used to get calls from auto glass repair places asking if I had a cracked windshield. One time I said "Let me go look" and left the phone on the desk and didn't return. After more than 10 minutes they finally hung up. I was pretty proud of myself until they called back the next day saying that I had a cracked windshield. "Um, no. Please take me off your call list." I like the tip about the hitting the pound sign repeatedly for those mysterious calls where no one is on the other end. I've gone through periods of sending back the postage paid envelopes, especially from credit card companies or dubious investment newsletters. Sometimes I fill them full of confetti, other times I'll write a word on piece of scratch paper and include the love note inside. It can be anything from "balls" to "bananas," anything to entertain the grunt opening the letter. If the company prints my name or a barcode on the envelope then I definitely send it back full of junk, I just take the trouble to remove the barcode or name. I've also added the addresses of one junk mailer into the address of another along with made up goofy names. I haven't practiced any of these more time consuming tricks for several months btw. Guess I'm feeling less peeved lately. I think Abbie Hoffman used to claim that the thing to do was to attach the postage paid letter to a brick, but apparently that's over the top. I've been tempted a few times, but instead in those moments of aggravation just pack the envelope as full as I can. Hmm, sheet metal eh? -
