what online stores do you buy Non-Mosaic CD's from
Quincy replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
One caveat about alldirect, though, is that a LOT of jazz discs are out of stock. My last order was about half OJCs and I had to really hunt to find ones that I liked and were in stock. You have me to blame. I did a run on OJC titles in the summer, and then again when the great OJC thread that Chuck started got going. I noticed some titles that were out of stock in the summer were back in stock in the fall, while others remained out of stock. And after I ordered many more OJCs were out of stock. Never got around to placing another order as DustyGroove then had the Jazz In Paris sale. As Ron mentions at least alldirect does warn you that items are out of stock beforehand, and on my big fall order only 1 disc was out of stock after I placed the order. I do like how they don't trap you into the eternal backorder. I use a combination of many of the sources mentioned. Alldirect for orders over $99. CD Universe for new releases that I want now (rather than waiting for them to show up at alldirect.) And Django's for the Notify Me list for used discs. I've been having trouble with them lately sending the wrong issues and discs not arriving, but they respond to my complaints and try to fix things. And then there's the yourmusic.com thing now too, and I ordered from Disciplinemobile for some Crimson related releases. Suddenly I feel responsible for our local jazz & blues cd shop closing earlier this month after 20+ years of business. -
Certainly it's bad form to threaten to kill the host, and yeah, he did some inappropriate stuff at times, but I'll miss the guy. I don't think I've ever quite run across anyone who expresses himself in such a unique way, and I've never quite figured him out either. Naked chick singers in one post, and knowing the finer details of some artist in another (or wanting to know more.) And as a few others have mentioned in this thread and others, I also feel he's been poked with a sharp stick a few times in the past week or so. I hope he gets a chance to make amends with Jim and at some point gets to come back.

Lotsa love here for the Slow Train material, especially live. I remember at the time being told that I shouldn't like it, but my gawd it was great! Aside from the groove, some of lines delivered by Bob were so delightfully nasty. Infidels was the greatest album since Blood On The Tracks. Then Oh Mercy was the greatest album since Blood On The Tracks. Then... Infidels was exciting when it came out due to Knoffler & Mick Taylor's association with it, along with the songwriting and execution (plus some of the outtakes.) I like Lanois's production on Oh Mercy (and yes, I have the outtakes.) I can understand why some don't care for it, and I wouldn't want every album to sound that way, but then I also love Robbie Robertson's first solo album too that Daniel co-produced. My vinyl of Blood On The Tracks is in terrific shape as I rarely play it, preferring the tiled bathroom sound of the outtakes that I've had on tape, later some of them on official releases and later still on CDR. I really should listen to the official album again sometime just to remember why I play the outtakes. I think that about covers some of the topics above.

Oh yeah! It's one of my favorites. Peter O'Toole really brings Henry II to life! And Katharine isn't too shabby either. It is very amusing to see young versions of Anthony Hopkins & Timothy Daulton, but their parents steal the show. Completely different sort of movie, but if you want more O'Toole after this and haven't seen My Favorite Year, it's another role that Peter nails. As an added bonus, it also stars the actor to the right in Aric's avatar.

Once upon a time before the internet bubble it was one of the hottest stocks on the market. They expanded too fast and the valuation of the stock fell as investors realized that maybe rotisserie chicken wasn't worth that much. It might have gone through bankruptcy sometime or other though I'm not positive. It is now part of McDonalds. That's where they get the salt. Not sure how up to date it is, but here's a map of restaurant locations.

I have a friend who knows Gans. I showed the friend the Steve Hoffman rumor. Friend sent Gans an e-mail which Gans answered quickly as he wasn't playing tonight. It's a hoax. Gans did not write the e-mail that's being quoted. There continues be some hope that the Fillmore run will be released because it is no longer available on archive.org, and one would think some day it will be released since they have multi-tracks. But sadly, the Gans e-mail is a forgery.

Taking into consideration that he's setting up a new computer, he's a real teddy bear.

Happy belated from the sunny Pacific NW! Really, it is sunny! Just ask your brother if you don't believe me.

my last mosaic purchase for the year? Ha!
Quincy replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Before owning the Mosaic set I found a used copy of the 1st JSP Django set. I'm pretty sure my ears (and not my eyes) are telling me the Mosaic sounds better (not that the JSP sounds bad.) And of course there's the usual fabby packaging. I don't have the Eldridge but it has been moving up on my want list, thanks in part to Jsngry and Paul and other's comments, plus my own curiosity. As much as I like the Django set, Paul's comments about music availability (or lack thereof) carries a lot of weight, especially if you don't expect to be buying sets every other week like some people here. -
Hank Williams Sr. Complete Mercury Box
Quincy replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm tempted to pick it up too. $60 for 10 discs is tough to pass by. There are a couple of threads that touch on it at the Steve Hoffman forum. 2 posters consider the sound quality to be good to adequate, and everyone agrees that the packaging (booklet) and completeness make it well worth owning. Hoffman link 1: Complete Hank thread. The link below is a discussion about the 3 disc Singles box, but other Hank packages are brought up, including the Complete set. Hoffman link #2. I'm pretty certain that I will pick it up sometime by summer. The only Hank I have on CD is the Health & Happiness Shows, and I foolishly didn't buy enough of those 2 record Polydor sets from years ago. Maybe not so foolish, now I can pick up this! -
It's fiction that deals with the subject and writing of fiction. A link.

Not to be morbid, but this was the first thought that crossed my mind... An article in the paper today by David Abel of the Boston Globe said he was experiencing chronic pain from various ailments over the years. Back surgery, hip replacement surgery, and he recently broke his leg while in Hawaii. If he wasn't able to medicate the pain, it must have been pretty bad.

My Farlow from Caiman came into today too. I ordered it a day later than others here, and it had 3000 miles to travel. Thank you much for the tip. I had this set in my sights but it got bumped down when the Farmer/Golson and the past 2 batches of Selects, and well you know, other things. Now I'll use the savings differnence and spend it at Mosaic! Just starting on disc one. My oh my, this is a steal! 7 discs of Farlow, and the latest RVGs & Moran expected to arrive in 3 hours or less. Yahoo!

Albums Which Had Modified Artwork or Title
Quincy replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Here's a link to several others. My favorite bit of weirdness is the cover of The Five Keys Live On Stage. A penis? Supposedly on the far left. You know, the hand? -
Don't be so sure about that. Actually, the thing I like about pro sports is that they're up front about the money. Whereas in college, you'd have athletes getting free food, which was much better than what students paid for (if you bought a dorm cafeteria package.) Jobs would be given which they didn't have to do yet they'd get paid. Papers would get written for them, they'd pass tests were never taken. Oh not all of the jocks mind you, but the more important ones would. And then there are cases of direct payment as well. And given the money the colleges make off of them, there might as well be some cash passed around, rather than all of the other nonsense. It may depend on the school and the time, but throw in the tax dollars involved (occurs in pro sports too) and in the end, give me the greedy professional athlete any day!

Thanks for that feedback Greg, as I made sure to note that I haven't heard any of the other CD incarnations. In the latest version there are 8 pages of newspaper clippings from '69 about the album. Included amongst the clippings is a list from RR of the top albums for the week of November 1st (the week it entered the charts.) 1. Abbey Road - Beatles 2. Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 2 3. Johnny Cash At San Quentin 4. Through The Past Darkly - Rolling Stones 5. In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson 6. Sound Of Music Soundtrack 7. SSSSH - Ten Years After 8. Then Play On - Fleetwood Mac 9. Nashville Skyline - Bob Dylan 10. Best Of The Seekers 11. Oliver! Soundtrack Not a bad list. Included #11 as I recall my sister buying it and playing it far too often for my liking. To see the rest of the list, you'll have to Google or buy the disc.

I never did get around to buying any of the above versions on CD, but I now have in my hands the latest flavor of In The Court Of The Crimson King. It's been out in Europe for awhile (maybe a couple of months) but was just released in the US this week. What's different this time: 1) They recently found the master tapes and thus used them for this release. 2) This time it's in HDCD, if that matters to you. DGM0501 is available at Discipline Global Mobile. I'm not sure if it's in stores or not, but other things to look for to make sure you get the latest version include a 2004 copyright on the back cover, the HDCD logo in the upper right of the back, and this time it's called an "Original Master Edition," as seen through the clear border to the left of the lovely face on the cover. Under the clear tray below the disc is the following information about the mastering: "The original masters - with splicing tape still present between the various songs, and crossfade between I Talk To The Wind and Epitaph yet to be created - were discovered in the Virgin archives in 2003." Also "24 bit remaster by Simon Heyworth at Super Audio Mastering, September 2004." Haven't had a chance to listen to it, and all I have to compare it to is a kinda beat up vinyl copy from 25 years ago. But I reckon it will be an upgrade for me.

I agree with Claypone. I think this set is a little more accessible to the Miles newbie. Give them something to look forward to. It looks classy too, especially when you polish the fingerprints off the silver spine. And while it is more accessible than the next box, it will introduce the listener to Wayne on the last disc to give hints of what was to come. Plus you get to sneak some Sam Rivers into her collection.

What's a sales tax? If the Portland he's from is Oregon, there's no sales tax.

States Mull Taxing Drivers By Mile
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
For the most part they do. However, with the ever increasing need to bring in revenues, some bureaucrat figured that if someone is commuting 60 miles each way 5 days a week in a hybrid instead of a Taurus or a SUV, the hybrid is costing the state about 4 gallons of tax revenue each day. Or 20 gallons a week. How dare that driver put fewer pollutants in the air and escape extra gas taxes! What irks me to no end is that studded tires are legal in Oregon. So you'll have people in the valley who go skiing a few times in the winter who put studded tires on the car. So every day in the valley, where it hardly ever snows (a couple of times a year at most, if at all), you hear these cars eating away at the roadway. It's absolutely crazy. Hmm, maybe we should tax skis to pay for road repair. -
States Mull Taxing Drivers By Mile
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
One problem, which perhaps the technology can handle, is would drivers in Oregon be charged for miles driven outside of Oregon? Would Washington drivers who communte to Portland no longer pay for their use of the roads, assuming we rid ourselves of traditional gas taxes in favor of a GPS system outfitted in each car. Or maybe that's on top of the traditional tax. In the end, it just seems like an overkill in technology spending to accomplish something that would likely be easier to fix by simply raising the gas tax. Or instead of offering a tax break to hybrid cars, level an extra fee. Yup, a terrible thing to do after all of the talk of promoting clean air & fuel efficency, but like gambling revenue, the state is addicted to fuel hogs. Also Oregon also has a terrible record in getting value out of its technology spending, so I'm highly skeptical that they would bring in more money than they'd spend for this project. I'm waiting for them to think up some scheme to charge me for the miles I ride on my bike. -
Agreed. That performance, along with the Aviator, in my opinion are the only two times he really stepped it up. Catch Me if you Can was close, but not quite there. Also a former Leo skeptic, but agree with the above. I too have seen him in a few interviews and was surprised at how he comes across more thoughtful than his old "pussy posse" reputation suggests. Still not sure about that Tom Cruise kid though...

Having spent a few days in a small town in Idaho with similar scenery as in the movie, it added an extra twist to it. I think if I was much younger I would immediately watch Napolean Dynamite 2 or 3 more times to memorize the great lines like I did with Animal House way back when. I'm still tempted to do it anyway. I like how it wasn't afraid to be stupid or sweet, and there's a great deal of cringe-inducing humor. I'm so glad I'm not teenager anymore! Gotta go feed the llama now.

Still holding onto the $100 gift card G. Wilson?
Quincy replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Another piling on and recommending the Gerald Wilson. I too waited a long time to buy it, as my only post '40s big band experience was Basie and Ellington and I was too busy adding to the Ellington. I was for some silly reason suspicious of more modern West Coast big band music. Why I don't know. I also looked at "Yesterday" and "Aquarius" and "Light My Fire" and turned up my nose for awhile. But luckily I decided that at worst if one disc was unplayable, then I was paying $20 a disc. I'd just pretend that I was buying Japanese discs, and given the Malcom Addey mastering why not pay extra? There is so much to like about the set, but Harold Land & Teddy Edwards are just 2 great reasons to pick it up. I ended up getting the Carmell Jones Select not long after getting this, just to get more of him and Harold Land. And Gerald Wilson. It's great music. It's fun music too. And it's beautifully mastered. Maybe you'll even end up liking some of the pop songs, but that doesn't matter. The rest makes up for it (and then some.)
