  1. Funny, didn't recognize any name except Harley Race. That sounds mighty familiar. Watched a lot of wrestling on St. Louis TV (Channel 11?) as a kid. I remember matches having time limits. 2 Minutes left, only 2 minutes left!!! Ric Flair was around when I was 8-9 years old, and is just NOW retiring???? Looked him up, he's 59!!!! Read this on the Wiki bio... 2 minutes left! I forgot about that! Thanks for the reminder. Let's see, I mainly watched around 1972-4 or so. I then began to suspect that maybe all that was seeing wasn't uh, real shall we say. Oh yeah, there was Lord Alfred Hayes too. He was a favorite of my dad (who is from Northern Ireland) as he found the character and the idea of a wrasslin' lord to be hilarious. In fact I just found about a book that I bought for him as light reading for a break in-between all of the science & econ stuff he usually reads. I'm hoping to read the copy I gave as a gift when I go and visit. It's called Wrestling At The Chase: The Inside Story of Sam Muchnick and the Legends of Professional Wrestling. The reviews all say it's very well written. Not something one would necessarily expect in a wrestling book, eh? And one reviewer says (thankfully) it's not 300+ pages long but more like 230 or so. Muchnick - now there's a name for ya!
  2. "Nature Boy" to me = Kirby. Fought the likes of Bulldog Bob Brown, Harley Race, Pat O'Conner (Airplane Spin), Bobo Brazil (Flying Headbutt), Danny Little Bear, Jack? Brisco (Figure 4 leg lock). Of course the Midwestern championship was considered 2nd only to the US one, or hell, maybe it was the other way around.
  3. And he's not foolin' either! What a nice surprise email this morning!
  4. Meanwhile I've been moving over to the compact florescent bulbs. Lower energy drain & longer life and the bulbs are getting cheaper compared to a few years ago. It's even brought back an antique lamp into play. We were advised not use anything over 25 watts in it. Well, 25 watts on a standard bulb doesn't do much so we set it aside. But a florescent that draws <25 watts can give off as much light as a 75 watt bulb. Nice to have the lamp back in business.
  5. I'm going to gab too much, but with taxes and other parts of life interfering with spending quality time with baseball still has me undecided. I can talk myself into about 15 different teams at least getting to the playoffs. After that who the hell knows what happens. The NL seems to have the most possibilities. MIlwaukee has so many 24-26 year olds (Fielder, Braun, Hardy & Hart) who are already very good, so if these guys improve some more pitchers will want to wear diapers when facing them. The bench might be deep enough to allow a trade for help wherever later if needed. But with Gallardo starting on the DL with a knee injury and having to hope that Sheets can pitch great for heck, I'll settle for 27 starts if you can pitch in October...ah, it's probably not going to happen. Cubs look interesting and this has been the decade of teams that haven't won it in a long time winning...still, they're the Cubs, so it's safer to bet they'll find a way to lose & Lou Piniella's head explodes this summer. NL East. I like the Phillies & Braves better than the Mets. Braves return to winning the division for the next 12 years again. A good mix of young & old. So many old & banged up guys on the Mets, I just don't see it happening. Then again, they have Wright, Reyes, Santana & Pedro. Phils look pretty good too - I like their bench depth, unless I'm thinking of last year's squad and not this year. The West, man, who the hell knows? I think if the Dodgers had stuck with the kids last year they could have won the division - once again Grady Little got the shaft. With no confidence I'll say the Dodgers win the west. AL? I could see only one team out of the East making the playoffs, and I'm not sure which one. The Yankees are older so I'm tempted to say they'll fail. But injuries and youngsters failing to live up to expectations could do in the Red Sox too. Or not, hell they could cakewalk to another title too. I'll still take the Indians over the Tigers in the Central. Question is will the Tigers get wild card? Am I foolish to discount the Twins? Probably, time & time again they put something together. West - Looks pretty putrid. I'm not that impressed with the Angels moves in the OF the past 2 years. But the M's have their share of troubles too. Now watch some team not even mentioned be a contender. (How ya feelin' Toronto? Is it 2010 yet Tampa?) Okay, stupid predictions: Yankees (huh?) Indians Angels Red Sox (wait, what did I say above?) Braves Brewers Dodgers and...um....Phils, no, the Cubs, no the Padres, D-backs...okay, the Cubs. (It's an all blue uniform NL playoffs!) Indians > Red Sox Yankees > Angels (only because I hate the Angels) Indians > Yankees Geez, NL I'm going to have to pretend I know who has the 2nd best record? Yeah, right: Brewers > Braves Dodgers > Cubs Brewers > Dodgers The NL finally wins an All-Star game & the home field advantage makes the difference. Brewers > Indians Oh yeah, it's happen'!
  6. The Dodgers played there for a few years when they moved from Brooklyn. "Moon shots" meant something else there - named for Wally Moon's short "blasts" over the LF fence. An old computer game (Earl Weaver baseball) included the park (or maybe I "built" it) and it was always a nutty experience. A couple of pictures here and some details, though surely better can be found through more digging.
  7. Sure it's a good machine. Question is what does she want to do. She may be able to get along just dandy with a regular MacBook (not a Pro). If she's editing video or something intensive like that then sure, go for the Pro. Otherwise no, unless you're the type who drives a Ferrari to the grocery store.
  8. I don't think the Tigers have a lock on things. And while the odds are longer, I don't think Boston or New York has a spot guaranteed either. For instance Boston went from having too many starters last December to losing Schilling for 1/2 the year, Beckett having back problems, Bochholz getting bombed in spring training, and Lester being wild in spring too. Not to put too much on spring training, but it's enough to cause the BoSox fan's heart to sputter. A similar list of doubts can be listed about the Yankees or other teams, which is "why we play the games." While it's foolish I've talked myself into enough "ifs" happening in favor for the Mariners to maybe win the West. It takes a lot, but it could happen.
  9. Oooo, there for the Expo eh? I was 5 on a family trip, however my parents' idea of fun was to visit Expo '67 in '68. Still very cool, and I remember the geodesic dome & many of the pavilions looking like it was someplace from the future. Note to Weizen - I think most of it was disassembled and moved elsewhere or torn down. A tour of Expo '67
  10. Another Oregonian in a town of 120k. In June 2006 teeth cleaning was $320. I believe it could have been $80 less, but that was without an IV, though the IV was recommended. Bastards, just tell me the cost to do it right! So figure in outrageous increases in health cost since '06 + NYC prices, and $1000 still sounds mighty high to me. One trick to pull on them is after the cleaning is to buy a bag of Science Diet T/D. This is a dental care food, and as you are buying it from them it will be on their records. We don't make this food the cat's main meal but instead give her 8 to 12 pieces in the morning and adjust her dinner portion accordingly. Since you use such small amounts you'd either want to freeze most of the 7 lb bag or see if the vet sells it in smaller amounts. (We live next to a vet who repackages it in 1 lb ziplock bags.) So next time around their computer had us flagged to have her teeth cleaned again a year later, but I pointed out we were using the dental food, and if it wasn't doing the job what was the point of using it? Oh, whadya know, her teeth looked fine. So maybe the food works, maybe it just gets the vet off your back. It's certainly easier than trying to brush your cat's teeth, although a few cats do become addicted to the taste of the toothpaste.
  11. This is exciting stuff, I like the description of how you're going to record. Classic!
  12. Yup, unfortunately you're about as sexy as a Fisher Price person.
  13. Me too. I think we all went through this last year, maybe the year before too as it's something that comes up all the time. The song where she really bugs me is "Scarlet," though more on the '74 ones than '77. But I love what she does on "Music Never Stopped" and "Weather Report." "Looks Like Rain" I tend to skip, but I think it's weird without her. As for her "Playing" screams, just join her!
  14. Interesting, I did not know of that feature. I was visited by someone with a bee as the avatar, which makes sense since I list Pollen Valley as where I'm from.
  15. I did a very light spot check where she usually sings, so by no means is this a full review. She was very pregnant at the time, around 8 months I believe. Interestingly I don't hear her at all on the "Looks Like Rain" from the 1st set on 11-10. Even Donna haters usually don't mind her there, but she isn't there. She does do her screams in "Playin'," but I'd give 'em about a 7 on the Donna scale (with 10 having the most "gusto.") I also didn't hear her on the 11-11 "Bertha" (2nd song), though again she shows up later in the set. Because of her condition she may have sat out the first 10-20 minutes, but again I didn't check every song. She's not intrusive on the 11-11 Eyes, and if anything it's easier to hear Bob & Jerry being off key on some of the songs. She's not on the bonus disc at all as by then (12-04) she was on maternity leave. Important info for the intolerant of Donna. 11-25 was her last show on the '73 tour as she didn't make the East Coast swing. Therefore you are in the clear with Dick's Pick 14 (juicy parts of 11-30-73 & 12-2-73) and DP 1 (also incomplete, 12-19-73). DP 14 is a favorite because it has 2 Dews, 2 WRS, & 2 Playings. A Dew to open on 11-30, a Dew as an encore on 12-2. That's making a statement! Of other maternity leave shows that haven't been officially released, 12-6 Cleveland has a dinorsaurific Dark Star>Eyes>Stella. The other Florida show (12-18) has a WRS>Dark Star>Eyes>Wharf Rat that is mighty nice. But it's '73, so it's hard to go wrong with any of it. Donna may be there, but I sure wouldn't want to ignore 11-11, the 2nd set from 11-14 with the Other One that keeps coming back, the Playin' sandwich of 11-17, and the 2 Denver shows. And the other November shows aren't bad either.
  16. Then hunt down disc 3 of 11-11-73, or whatever has Dark Star>Mind Left Body Jam>Eyes>China Doll. If you love the Dead you have to hear it. You've helped me Crimson so I'm trying to return the favor.
  17. I wish I had an extra set. I wish I had gotten one of them. Their site was down when I tried to order the 69 fillmore set on a Friday, and the next Monday, they were sold out. Man, was I steamed. I still don't know why they insisted upon making it limited. Seems to go against what the band is about. I bet it would have sold out at 20,000, even. It was simply a bad guesstimate on their part. No Dick's Pick had sold 10,000, and they thought along the lines that this was a very expensive Dick's Pick, so they honestly believed 10,000 would be more than plenty. They just didn't see the demand at all. And now they're stuck to their word as far as it being limited, at least for awhile. I'm guessing at some point either through a download, or perhaps if something like Blu-ray becomes the more common physical format (if such a thing exists) that they'll reissue it. I own a Bob Marley Songs of Freedom boxset that is limited (#4038) in a long box that was remastered & reissued in a smaller package.
  18. It's here........... November 9 thru 11 1973 boxset for $100 Includes bonus disc of some of 12/4/73.
  19. 7-1 in March, 15-6 since February. Sure there were some patsies along the way but also wins over PHX & DET on the road to go with the Spurs victory. You might be able to move up from the 7th seed all the way to 5th.
  20. May Bobby Cox make a couple of bright moves this year in your honor! Happy Day!
  21. Boy I'll say! And Chris Paul is the last person the over 30 all-star point guards want to face too. He has pasted Kidd & Nash (though plenty of PGs too.) Paul is also appearing in more of those "here's who your team drafted instead" articles. But the team obviously has other talented players too. Yup. You'd think he'd get some credit for the way the team has played, though who knows, I'm sure somebody will complain he only wins when he has a great PG.
  22. She's still in your computer Chris. 1) Go to utilities and open Terminal. 2) In terminal type emacs. 3) When the editor has loaded, hold Shift and hit the Escape key. 4) Type xdoctor and hit return. 5) Answer the 1st question and proceed from there. You'll have to hit return twice for each answer you type. 6) When you're done control-x control-c will quit the editor. Pretend you're Mr. Spitzer and that you have some urges. Hell, if Elliot had "talked" to Eliza he'd probably still be gov.
  23. I just now happened upon this thread, after a prolonged absence from this and other message boards, and the first tune that popped into my head was "Hey Bulldog." This is something I found on some weird Mexican pirate cassette as a teenager at of all places the local Target, and it's been a favorite ever since. You got it on a weird Mexican pirate cassette, I got it in 1980 on a Uruguayan (probably) pirate of the Yellow Submarine LP. The stock wasn't cardboard but a slick paper contained inside of thick clear plastic. The LP just slide inside of that. Personally I think the song sounds best from a dubious source - adds to the allure.
  24. Eye-level with the rim! I'm pretty sure LeBron can grab quarters off the top of the backboard. Huh, like he needs the money.
  25. Growing up in a small Midwestern town '78-79 brought in all sorts of weirdness to TV, with Devo, Zappa, Kate Bush, Talking Heads, Delbert McClinton, Ornette, hell, even the Chieftains. And annoyances, like Rickie Lee Jones & Bette Midler. I thought Leon Redbone played on the show more than he did in the early days, though maybe one of the cast members imitated for a show or two. Dylan's "You Gotta Serve Somebody" was exceptional. Being a teenage atheist I felt very conflicted loving the performance but not the message. I chose the former! He ended up skipping a section of the song but the back up singers didn't miss a beat. It's hilarious to see the short bassist behind him head-bobbing & "funking out" if you see the video, as he looks like a brother to Spinal Tap's, plus to the way it's shot he looks no taller than a leprechaun. Neil Young performing "Keep On Rocking In The Free World" in '89 was phenomenal. He was even an animal during rehearsals. The Pogues on St. Paddy's day in '90 were also fun (assuming you were drunk too.)
