Dispelling Economic Myths #2: The Gold Standard
Quincy replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You probably know this, but this is why the dime, quarter, half dollar and old silver dollars have ridges on the edges. A carry over from 1964 and before when those coins had silver in them. The ridges were to indicate whether or not they had been shaved of silver. The penny & nickel have smooth edges. No silver in them, so who cares? -
Bix Restored: I'm astonished by these transfers
Quincy replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
From all of the other scattered Bix threads (gotta use Google to search the 3 lettered Bix on the "o") I'm fairly certain that the Bix Restored series is considered the best sounding. I recall that as Jazzbo's opinion (unless it's changed), and he also has the Mosaic and "other stuff" too. Certainly never really heard a bad word about Restored, other than maybe price or that it's "too complete," but never about the sound. -
concerts we are ashamed to admit we attended
Quincy replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My first (& most embarrassing) was a band I loathed, almost as much as Styx. But I made an agreement with 2 freshman friends that the first show that came to Assembly Hall next to our dorm that 2 of the 3 agreed to see I'd go too. For 26 years it was a shameful thing to admit, but thanks to the Sopranos instead some people actually envy me. Suckers! Journey. Don't stop, bee-leave-in', whoa oo oo oo oo... Cultural revisionism can be nutty. -
Time for the post I didn't want to write.
Quincy replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Oregon needs a moose, especially that extra special subspecies known as the Jazzmoose. You'll fare better in the fall thru spring rain rather than La. humidity I think. I think we're first in the country in per capita cat ownership and micro-breweries. Not sure if those 2 are related. And I'm pretty sure we're 49th in the union in church attendance (only Alaska has us beat, or um, lags us.) I think one of the first 2 fun facts might be behind that stat. -
Ive defintely heard it before and am thinking along the lines of a 70s TV show theme song. But I was unsuccesful in pinning it down, so I'm probably wrong. That's my thinking as well. It almost sounds like it could be "walking around" music from one of the Peanuts specials.

Happy Birthday Alexander!

Have a good one, and thanks for your comic recs from a long ago thread. -
Oh it is, yet the compilations don't give enough (or at least for me.) I went with overkill during one of the sales and am very happy I did. I think there's a bit more diversity in sound in this set compared to Bix/Tram/Tea set, if it's fair to compare early sets. The sound quality is terrific given the age - in some cases startling so, and most of the discs aren't overloaded with alternates either, so many can be put in the player without any extra setup & played for enjoyment's sake rather than "study."

I'm worth $10 less. Wonder if losing my appendix cost me a sawbuck?

Yes, it's beyond your Mac. There's no news on any of the Mac or security related sites about this sort of thing happening due to the Mac. Whew! Sorry you had to go through this though, as it's no fun.
-
I've been searching around on the various Mac sites and have yet to come across any mention of an OS X virus, malware or Trojan that acts this way. Unless the title of the movie is too disgusting to mention, would you mind sharing the name (or at least part of it)? I only ask as I'm trying to find out information about it, it's not that I'm doubting you. (For instance, years ago there was a "Simpsons" virus that affected OS 9.)
-
Bwahahaha! Did not know about that one. And um, great title there too James. But if it helped make Yacht Rock possible, it was worth it. Episode 2 features Loggins.

Jim Cramer: Pay No Attention to that Crazy Man on TV
Quincy replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes indeed. One could spend a lot of time consuming garbage and get nowhere, other than wasting time and getting poorer. I've always found the question of when to sell to be much more difficult. Even when you're right, due to the transaction costs & taxes, along with finding the right place to reinvest the proceeds and how the sold stock moves in the years following....A lot of things you have to get right! -
Jim Cramer: Pay No Attention to that Crazy Man on TV
Quincy replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Nonsense. A person does not have to spend 52 hours a year (or more) for each stock owned to "beat the market," that's just silly. Cramer is an ass, but at least now what he's preaching makes more sense, especially compared to his previous churn churn churn ways. -
Did you know the original title was "Tools Of Ignorance In The Rye"...
-
Quincy, it's been forty years since I read Cather in the Rye, but as I recall Holden daydreamed about catching a girl falling in a rye field. Baseball wasn't a part of it. Righto. I should have inserted a in there.
-
Baseball attracts the literature crowd who will wax poetic about the connection between fathers & sons, how the game is the fabric of America, blah blah blah. It was "Catcher In The Rye," not "Quarterback." People care more about its history & the numbers attached, as the individual stands out more in baseball. Aside from the pitcher vs. batter confrontation, the faces aren't hidden under helmets & face masks. Football is more about mighty gladiators and the field generals who direct them. When you throw someone to the lions you expect him to do whatever is necessary to survive. Lest I start ripping off George Carlin's old routine here, I think there's also the illusion that it would be much easier to get off the couch and play pro baseball, where only the more delusional fan thinks he could play in the NFL.

That's a ridiculous comment, though I've certainly come to expect it. Edmonds is so far past his prime he needs a pair of binoculars to get a glimpse. I have to admit Dan, sometimes it's very hard not to give to at least nudge you from time to time -- it's harmless Bro. Just a nudge...

It was believable enough. Glad it wasn't reality, especially regarding Poo-holes. Apologies to Luis & all Gonzalezs. Luis is always referred to as a "nice guy."
-
I agree it's tough as hell. I'm inclined to think his career would have looked more like Tom Seaver's in his 30s. Seaver never struck out 200 again after his first full season with the Reds at age 33. (Doesn't that sound strange?) He plugged on until he was 41, striking out roughly 5 per 9 innings, and other than an injury plagued '82 season had fewer hits than innings pitched. (Sheeeeeeeeeet, off years for him, but worth $12-15 million today.) I think the major benefit of the 'roids for a pitcher is in the legs, that's why I brought up Seaver. He was all about leg drive (remember the dirty knee on the push off leg.) Both Pettitte & Clemens have those massive figure skater thighs. (Oh great, now I'm accusing Dorthy Hamill of juicing.) It doesn't hurt to have muscular forearms either, but mostly those legs can add on the mph.
-
Juan double dip there? I've always suspected Luis Gonzalez, just because of the muscle mass he grew, along with the Frankenstein shaped head. (Btw, I really like Frankenstein, so it's not really an insult. ) I'm hoping Edgar Martinez avoids the list, though I know he was big on creatine.

I haven't heard enough (but I'm working on it), so I'll just offer one - Jordi Savall's La Folia on Alia Vox. Previously I never associated "authentic instruments" with "happy feet," but I do with this disc.

I read that Fukudome has been compared to J.D. Drew. As soon as I read that I heard Matthew & Noj snickering. One site noted he hit a little lighter in Japan than Godzilla (the Yankee) and is a little older than when Matsui made his US debut. So I suppose that comparison might be fair, as long as you don't include the baggage. The Astros for Tejada looks deal looks like a lot of junk, though I say that without cracking the Prospectus so it's ill informed. But it almost looks like it's factored in that he made the Mitchell report. He could put up some pretty heady numbers hitting in that dopey lil' ballpark. As for Rowand, while I can't imagine he'll be experiencing many wins anytime soon, he's a west coast guy, and he'll have a lot of money to spend in a beautiful town. There are worse things than to be young & rich in San Francisco.

A rough audience has shown up on the Dime. Given the crowd enthusiasm & the venue I doubt that any good sounding recording will appear. Though oddly some of the cellphone stuff doesn't sound half bad.

Re: Pigpen. I know, I know, I tend to bash Pigpen way too much. I hereby resolve that in the year of 2008, I, Matthew, will not say a discouraging word about Pigpen. My days of dumping on the poor guy will be ending, and I will even strive to listen to his music with a more attentive ear. I'm with you on the Pigpen "Lovelight" raps too, but I know there are at least a couple of major "Lovelight" fans here. I tend to just like the jaunty beginning. But I do love the Pig for "Hard To Handle," "It Hurts Me Too," and I know it's just a silly 1st set song, but I love "Mr. Charlie." It's a good song to get in the head when hiking up a small mountain.
