  1. Okay, I know this is one of the most derided Lou Donaldson albums....hell, some people seem to think this is one of the worst Blue Note albums of the era. My question is simply....why? I know that some people aren't thrilled with the varitone, but Lou sounds better than most, managing to keep his tone despite the electronics. A couple tracks. Turtle Walk. This is seriously one of the funkiest organ tracks EVER. It's the kind of tune that makes me want to dance around the room. Melvin Sparks is at his crystalline best, creating effortless motion. Then Earland comes in with another of his signature solos. Hot Dog. Memorable enough to be revisited by The Greyboy Allstars some years back, but it would be damn hard to top this original take. Yet another brilliant Sparks solo (this cat was seriously ON during this date) followed by yet another brilliant Earland solo (the pedal tone throughout the solo is tastefully handled). Not to even mention IDRIS MUHAMMAD... Time to re-examine this sucker.
  2. Bill Ward Let's face it, the guy was playing some interesting stuff behind the Iommi/Geezer Butler onslaught. Faeries Wear Boots is a good example of how he kept things swingin' instead of ploddin'. Ian Paice This guy STILL kicks ass to this day. I still remember hearing the live version of Space Truckin' from Made In Japan for the first time, I was so blown away by the snare work in that song.
  3. I'm definitely a fan of Greg Lake, which is really the only reason that I listen to any ELP (and that isn't very often). I still have the debut album which has some nice moments, my favorite album is actually Trilogy which I think works pretty well most of the way through. I've owned some of the other albums in my life but I never liked them enough to justify going back out and re-purchasing them. I would say that of all the 70's prog rock bands, ELP has dated badly. p.s. - I do like Emerson's score to Dario Argento's Inferno however....
  4. Agreed, that's good stuff!
  5. I hope he's alright and will be able to continue his career.
  6. mid-70's today, I'm not complaining.
  7. Hey Jim, Can you change me from "Master of the Groove" to "Misguided Member"?
  8. Okay, I stand corrected. But, I think Bill's little quote of Kevin's with "apparantly not" stuck at the end was a form of attack and that was what I responded to.
  9. Just to clarify something, I'm always happy when new members join and add to the community, the more the merrier. But there seems to be a plethora of folks running around here recently that seem to join with their only purpose being to stir up shit. Am I imagining this?
  10. As a long time member of the old BNBB as well as the Big O...I gotta say that you are coming off as an unmitigated, narrow-minded jackass. Every community (whether virtual or physical) is going to have some people that sometimes leave their common sense behind before they post something (Aric) and will naturally end up saying something to offend. However, you can not judge an entire community based solely on the village idiot.
  11. I really like the Telarc release Closeup In Swing/A New Kind Of Love. The first album included is SUPERB!
  12. If her debut had come out on Verve I don't think anyone would have noticed or cared, that's what was expected of Verve at the time. I didn't think it was an issue then and in hindsight I think it's pretty damn hilarious what an uproar it caused. Let's face it, the "Blue Note" that exists today isn't even REMOTELY the same label it was in 1965. So if they put out a Slayer album I wouldn't care. Apples and Oranges.
  13. Very nice album, the remastering on the VME is superb. Favorite track is John Brown's Body, probably has more to do with the title than anything, I used to live right across the street from the John Brown Memorial when I was a kid (Harpers Ferry, WV).
  14. That makes me sad, a player that I will TRULY miss being able to watch play the game.
  15. Found a used copy of this box yesterday at a good price...MAN...what a GREAT set of music!
  16. Jabar Gaffney hasn't left yet, though he might. Still got Chad Jackson who hasn't yet had the chance to show what he's got. Obviously. the Pats are high on him since they let Stallworth and Gaff look at offers from other teams. Still have Wes Welker and Kelley Washington. I really don't think Stallworth is going to be missed all that severely. He has never quite achieved his "promise" that he had coming into the NFL, he's a career #2 receiver. The Pats used him most successfully on screens and quick out patterns...Welker can easily cover that territory. Welker is a SPECIAL player, I've always liked him, he's just got great football IQ.
  17. It got up to around 67 here, sunny and beautiful!
  18. Crazy. I'm actually surprised he got that close to the ground considering how badly the wind had blown off the approach angle. But a great job of recovery! Good thing they make those wings sturdy....
  19. Mandy says Happy Birthday!
  20. Search around the net for a program called "DVD Decrypter", it isn't made anymore but you can find it "hidden" around. It will strip the audio (either the entire thing or chapter stops) and save it to an AVI file type. Then you can use a free program called Be Light which will convert it to .wav files.
  21. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Mandy has volunteered to help blow out the candles....
  22. I don't find it necessary to choose, I appreciate Wayne's contribution on both ends of the spectrum. I would say in the "grand scheme of things" that he might be better remembered as a composer (and he has written lots of great tunes) but you can't take anything away from Wayne the musician either.
  23. Coleman Hawkins - Complete Keynote Recordings - disc 2
  24. Disc 6. Easily one of my favorite Mosaic sets.
