  1. I'm in the "I was too young to make a choice, so...snip, snip" camp.

    LOCKJAW

It's not secret that I worship at the alter of Lockjaw, discovered by accident while going through my "Johnny Griffin obsession" of the late 90's. We got "The Tenor Scene" in the store where I worked at and I was just floored by the interplay & the juxtaposition of their styles...that when blended together sounded more like a two-headed monster sax player instead of two different people. So soon I was off on a Lockjaw kick that remains unabated to this day. It would be practically impossible for me to pick absolute "favorites" and many of them have been mentioned. But a few that stick out of the pile for me are... You just really can't go wrong with this album (or Night Hawk w/Hawkins). Having Shirley Scott on board for this tenor meeting was really a plus as well, she manages to keep the testosterone down to an acceptable level in this company. :-) Okay, Cobb & Lockjaw, playing full tilt..take no prisoners...blow your fucking roof off jazz. It's the kind of album that makes you dance around your apartment like a raving idiot (which is a definite sign of quality). This one will be traveling with me to the desert island. Although Lock isn't on all the tracks, it's still just a perfect album (check out Garland's take on Stella By Starlight!). Interestingly enough, there is a bonus track from this session not available on the OJC release. A track called "Untitled Blues" was released on the compilation "Straight Blues". A later date but an exceptionally fine one, well worth grabbing if you can track it down. As Lon mentioned in the past, the great thing about Lockjaw (and Griffin) is that you can hear the entire jazz tradition in the stuff these guys play. Trad, bebop, hard bop, soul jazz...and all played through Lockjaw's VERY personal and mystifying musical mind.
  4. Post of the day...
  5. So is this new movie "I Am Legend" that he's in a remake of "Omega Man"? That's the first thought I had when I saw the preview. I Am Legend is the title of the original novel by Richard Matheson. It has been filmed as "The Last Man On Earth" starring Vincent Price and "The Omega Man" and has been ripped off countless times (Night of the Living Dead, etc). It's one of my favorite novels but I'm so turned off by the leading man choice that I'll skip it thank you very much.
  6. I'm a fan of Harrison Ford, I'm a sci-fi fan, I'm a fan of PKD...but I didn't like this movie when it originally came out, I didn't like the director's cut any better and I doubt I'll get around to seeing yet another version. For some reason the film has always struck me as being flat and lifeless. This has nothing to do with the "tone", just the execution.
  7. It was sunny and 75 here yesterday, I have this feeling that we'll get hit eventually though...
  8. For me it's a tossup between "The Seeker" and "Won't Get Fooled Again".
  9. I read that they didn't want to "expose him to the harsh playing conditions" at Lambeau and risk injury...in other words they spent ALOT of money on this particular car and it will remain in the garage until just the right moment, thank you very much.
  10. Shhh...be very quiet...nobody knows about this... Seahawks are 9-4, clinched NFC West for 4th straight year, Hasselback is lighting it up (4 TDs today), they've won 5 straight, their defense is second in takeaways and they've given up less than 10 passing TD's all season. ...just don't tell anybody...
  11. Jazz At Oberlin. That was the first Brubeck I heard and became an instant fan.
  12. Now that's a GREAT album title, cover, etc...I want it!
  13. That basically sums it up.
  14. After the most depressing beginning to a year in recent memory (awful job, hated where I lived, etc) things started to look up. 1. Was able to hook back up with my best friend from High School after 15 years. 2. He insisted I move to Virginia Beach, which has ended up being a great move, I really love it here. 3. 3 weeks after I arrived I found a job that (although doesn't really pay enough) is something that I really enjoy doing. 4. Just found a great apartment 1/2 mile from the beach, I move in this weekend. 5. Flying down to Austin to spend Christmas with Lon. 2007 ended up being not all that bad and for once I'm actually looking forward to the new year.
  15. He recorded it on Pieces Of Blue And The Blues w/Bobby Broom & Rodney Jones. A fine disc that's worth searching for.
  16. Weather is all over the map here. It's 70 degrees one day...then 35 the next...pneumonia weather.
  17. If you only want "great" albums in your collection, don't bother. If you don't mind forking out small beer for an album that's merely enjoyable, and honest though commercial, pick up "Everybody come on out" or "Use the stairs" both on Fantasy LPs which I'm sure you can find cheap, or "More than a mood" (Music Masters), which is straight ahead stuff with Freddie Hubbard (and that one's deleted, too). MG I'm going to guess that MG is simply unaware of the Concord release Gene Harris Trio + 1. Its a tremendous reunion of the principals from Blue Hour and no one can accuse it of being "snoozy" - its a rip-snorting barn-burner of a set with Stan and Gene (and Ray Brown) ripping up three blues plus "Battle Hymn" and a ballad. An all-time favorite of the former GHF. I definitely second the recommendation, a KILLER set!
  18. Even though the later albums are hit or miss there are still some fantastic tracks...Eminence Front anyone?
  19. I'm very sorry for your loss. My cat is basically my child, she means that much to me. I completely understand what you're going through.
  20. Sad news about Sean Taylor, 24 years old is just too young to go....
  21. Why is it necessary to compare Turrentine to baseball or to downgrade him to an "okay" player standing in shadows of countless others whose talent far exceeds his own? (that sounds like a Lovecraft quote) It's not. Give the man some credit for having a fucking VOICE! Turrentine was always Turrentine, he was real, regardless of the situation, personnel, producer or commercial viability...underneath it all, the man was definitely real. I could care less about chops or ground-breaking or whatever...Turrentine creates JOY (yes, I said joy). His playing makes you wanna get up and dance or drink or screw or just go nuts. It's music for motion and for emotion. You can't teach soul like he had...
  22. Well, I doubt seriously these guys got through the 80's in a hard rock band without having some "baggage" to deal with. The guy died too young, their anthems sounded real good to an 8th grader back in 1983. Rest in peace.
  23. I thought it was going to be another "Sunday night blowout" but actually ended up being one of the more entertaining games I've watched recently. Every team on the Pats schedule is going to be dissecting the game film to figure out how the Eagles "almost" won the game last night. That was probably a good wake up for the Pats, so they don't get too complacent in their greatness.
