Found out at the last minute that Johnny Mandel was leading a 17 piece band at a local club. Place was packed. Apparently he does 6 or so gigs a year. He started 8 years ago when he was 80! Even when they played The Shadow of Your Smile he turned into a stomper after one chorus. He seems to be channeling his days arranging for Basie and Herman.

The Pepper Adams discography "Joy Road" quotes Adams as saying it was '56 and all of Miles's group except Miles was supposed to support Adams and Fuller but Red Garland didn't show up. Adams remembers it as after he moved to NY in January '56. The Miles quintet was in Boston at Storyville.

Me too (or three). I interviewed him once and was really shocked by his attitude to women. However he was very intelligent about music.

Well, I never heard of this guy before but, looking at the wiki page you referenced, I can see why. MG Did you see the link within the article to Keltner's webpage, MG, which lists his recordings? He recorded on albums by Albert King, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Roberta Flack, Booker T. Jones, Chaka Khan, Aaron Neville, Ibrahim Ferrer, the Impressions, Cal Tjader, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Cliff, Ziggy Marley, Keb Mo, Mavis Staples, Pops Staples--it wasn't all rock music. I think he also did a record with Bill Frisell.

I'm another one who never saw The BRady Bunch but loved Shultzy on the Bob Cummings Show.

In the documentary "The Last of the Blue Devils" Count Basie says he'd just like to be remembered as a nice guy. I was reminded of that reading the interview with Bob Cranshaw who certainly seems to be a nice guy and the story he tells of Milt Hinton's generosity is pretty mind-boggling. Given that many of our musical heroes appear to be less than stellar in other aspects of their lives which jazz musicians do you know or know of who seem to be genuinely nice guys? I'll start. (Obviously Miles doesn't make the cut even though I love his music.): Count Basie, Bob Crenshaw and Milt Hinton (see above). John Coltrane. There's a documentary in which Elvin Jones describes Trane as a saint. He says it with such reverence it made me love Elvin too. Gil Evans (though I've read that his mellowness was the result of a lot of weed.

I love this record.

I saw him with a group in Toluca Lake several years ago. Took my father-in-law who had heard a lot of jazz as a youth but hadn't gone to a club in 30 years. Told me he used to see a child prodigy named Victor Feldman. We both had a good time listening to Strazzeri.

I remember that many years ago Coleman Hawkins picked a Clooney-Crosby Lp as one of his favorites. I had owned it for some reason as a kid and really liked it, so his accolades for it reassured me that I wasn't nuts. However it' still the only record I have of either of them except for the Ellington/Strayhorn/Clooney.

I felt that way too but whenever I tried to point out examples they were trivial. Did you notice any major ones?

Reminds me a bit of Return to Me which he did for the Sopranos. (Or at least it was on The Sopranos soundtrack.)

Since this is for HBO, unlike most films that get announced this one will probably get made. Chris, I hope you're staying involved.

What were the 2001 references?

I've got a cd which according to the notes has 3 songs from Stockholm with Henry Grimes on bass and 3 from NY with Bob Cranshaw on bass. Haven't ;istend to this for a while but remember liking it.

I would also claim that there's at least one "American institution" that he has done the opposite of making a vigorous defense" of: Duke Ellington.

I don't care about his politics. His book on Pops was pretty good. His book on Ellington was a piece of shit. (Though his politics might explain some of his inanities about EKE.)
