Jim Alfredson's Dirty Fingers - A Tribute To Big John Patton
medjuck replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Announcements
Got mine. Played it continuously while driving to and from LA. Great stuff. -
I wrote the following to the Duke-LYM listserve: "I haven’t read the book yet so probably shouldn’t comment but several of the reviews have mentioned that EKE rarely gave Strayhorn credit. I’ve listened to a lot of Ellington’s radio broadcasts and I think he rarely played a Strayhorn composition without acknowledging the composer. I’ve just now been listening to a a Jubilee show in which he introduces Mid Riff by saying “This next selection is written by my composing, arranging companion: Billy Strayhorn.” David Hajdu’s “Lush Life” is a great biography of Strayhorn but it over-empahises the extent to which Duke can be considered amongst those who did not acknowledge Strayhorn’s contribution to the band. Unfortunately most writers who have followed him have not noticed that Hajdu never lets nuance get in the way of a good story. (I once read piece in the NY Times where someone wrote that a Duke would play Lush Life without crediting the composer. Of course the band never played Lush Life except on a couple of occasions when Billy was at the piano. ) I hope that Teachout hasn’t reiterated what is now (unfortunately) the received opinion." Never-the-less I'll probably read this book-- partly because I am interested in Duke's sex life. The other biographies I've read have all tip-toed around the subject so much that I never could tell whom he was married to or living with at any given time.

Happy B'day Brownie!!

Lou's left town. I saw him with 3 acoustic bassists. Wondered if he was influenced by Ornette. I didn't really get the Velvets while they were i existence, but I was so much older then.

The Mingus Candid set.

I thought the article was clever and I'm a Jew. The point of the article is that "Redskins"is as offensive as "Kike". There is no joke if you don't think "kike" is offensive.

billy eckstine biography

This Savoy reissue reunites all the studio and live recordings, if I'm not mistaken. F The band appeared a few times on the Jubilee radio shows (Fats, Jug,Budd Johnson Leo Parker, Blakey, Sarah Vaughn etc). I've got a couple of them but am looking for the rest. Actually I see that I only have the FEb 19, 1945 broadcast. Anyone got any others? f them but am looking for the rest. -
I was seriously weighing this matter a couple of weeks ago trying to transpose it: Would it be ok to call a team The Miami Jews? Probably. Seems to me the equivalent of Braves or Indians (the problem with the latter team being their mascot/logo who sort of looks Jewish to me). But the equivalent of Redskins would be The Miami Hebes if not the Miami Kikes.

He stayed with us once at my apartment in Toronto. (My room mate was a folk singer who knew him from the circuit.) Seemed like a good guy.

Anybody else receive this yet? I just got it. It's now called "Trombone for Lovers".

But the music is available (perhaps with some effort). Bird's playing on "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" on that broadcast perfectly illustrates what Crouch is talking about.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

And where's the "Big Band" version of George Jackson? -
This morning on Weekend Edition there was an interview with Stanley Crouch about his new Bird bio. He read a section describing Bird with the McShann band at the Savoy in Feb 1942 while they played music underneath what he was saying. Only unless I'm nuts (always a possibility) what they played wasn't from the only extant recordings of that show and worse, the 2nd solo is not by Bird but by a tenor player. You can hear it here. http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=2&t=1&islist=false&id=237040499&m=237570181 BTW I don't blame Crouch for this-- it's the producer's responsibility.

If we're going to discuss further purchases shortly after buying Jazz Red Hot and Cool I joined the Columbia Record Club's Jazz division and received KOB, Ellington Indigoes, Lionel Hampton's Silver Vibes and JJ Johnson's Blue Trombone. A pretty good start.

Saw them last night, Third time and I thought this was the best version yet (Or at least gave the best performance). -

The gypsy guitar player is Laurendo Almeda. -
The 1943-1945 Ellington transcription were for World and are avaialbe with multiple takes on the 5 Circle cds. The sound is great. There are also a couple of 2 cd packages that contain Ellington's "Standard" Transcriptions from 1941. Included is the first studio version of Take the A Train. (Has a different Ray Nance solo.) 29 cuts in all. I've never seen alternate takes of them.

Important new releases hidden or not mentioned on this site
medjuck replied to l p's topic in New Releases
This may be the funniest thread I've ever read on this forum. Since I can't top any of these posts let me ask a serious question: Are there other Verve complete sessions avaialbe on iTunes? And was this ever released on cd? -
The article was just plain silly. Yes owners cam make more money selling a company than keeping it. That's true in all industries, But if they have no income they're not going to get very much for the company.

She made mention of that album during her performance. I talked to her briefly between sets and mentioned that I'd bought it when it was new50 years ago. I'd forgotten that it was her first record. (Though I think she recorded with George Russell before then.) -

Just came from seeing Sheila Jordan. She turns 85 next month and the local pianist accompanying her with his trio is 83. They were both great. Gives me hope.
