    Jack Bruce

RIP I saw him playing acoustic bass with the Mike Gibbs band in Hampstead many years ago (though after his stint with Cream). I have a vague memory of his once being in a band with Carla Bley and Mick Taylor.
  2. I have a vague recollection that the record got a lukewarm critical reception when it was first released and the tracks without Trane are the only tracks from Miles on Columbia 1955-75 that are not in a box set which makes it sort of an orphan Lp. It's a great record and Trane's solo on the title track is a monster. It also has some of Wynton Kelly's best playing. In his Miles bio Jack Chambers is sort of dismissive of the record but I've always liked his description of "Teo": "Teo catches Davis playing with a Spanish tinge much in the manner of 'Sketches of Spain', and Coltrane follows him with a tinge that drifts eastward toward, say, Lebanon...." Chambers thinks some of the pieces were edited by Macero but I don't think I agree. Until I heard the alternate take of "Prince" I thought the piano solo ending seemed like Kelly just stopped playing as if it were a rehearsal but both takes have the same structure.
  3. Let us know as soon as you have copies for sale. I'm the only one I know of who doesn't appreciate "But Beautiful" but I really liked "The Bear Comes Home".
  4. About 50 years ago saw Reggie Workman with The Jazz Messengers and was knocked out by him.
  5. I'm nervous posting this since I can't find any info on Google News but John Altman's Facebook page and Wikipedia say that Tim Hauser of Manhattan Transfer died today. I used to like the radio show he did in LA.
  6. I'm curious: Can you easily tell the difference between the original and the copy? (Is it live or is it Memorex?)
  7. Thanks. That makes sense.
  8. I finally gave in to the urge and spent as much as I ever have on a single disc in order to get Jazz at the Plaza vol 2 in the mistaken belief that Billie Holiday sang with the Ellington band on her two titles. Turns out she has her own backing group. It's Buck Clayton on trumpet but who's in the rhythm section? The generally excellent on-line Holiday discography lists the Ellington band. Anyone know who the other musicians are?
  9. I bought my copy from Buell. Honest. (Don't know why he had one or how many he had.)
  10. I got this and am really liking it.
  11. That's what I thought of right away too. And I really didn't like that film.
  12. Don't dots over notes indicate that they're to be played staccato (I don't really remember much from my music lessons 50 years ago.)
  13. Joshua Redman Trio at small (600 seat) theater last night. Good stuff.
  14. I once picked up a Laserlight cd with some of the Ellington Musicraft cuts. Also some King Cole trio transcriptions.
  15. Very laudatory review in LA Times. Well positioned in paper too. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-et-ms-coltrane-live-offering-review-20140923-story.html
  16. Just finished the book. It's really good as is the music download. Her website has streaming access to much of the music she talks about (not just music by Art).
  17. BTW "Revenge" is avaialbe for download from Amazon for $5.94.
  18. Listening to the Disc 6 of the Clifford Jordan Mosaic, which is the equivalent of Glass Bead Game Lp I noticed taht it was 64 minutes long. I don't ever remember another Lp that long. IIRC one of the 2 releases from Mile's '64 Philharmonic Hall concert was about 30 minutes a side but I can't think of any other Lps that had 60 minutes of music. Were there many and didn't the length cause sound problems?
  19. Does that mean much Pee Wee Russell? (I hope.)
  20. Jeff Koons at Whitney. Not my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed a couple of other smaller exhibits they had on other floors.
  21. Saw it many years ago. Very good.
  22. I've been listening to the Clifford Jordan Mosaic set (to my surprise I really like the Pharoah Sanders). According to the notes, on the Cecil Payne cut "Slide Hampton" Payne "adroitly shifts to the alto" at the end of his baritone solo. He's so adroit that the last notes of the baritone solo over-lap with the beginning of the brief alto solo! Did he pull a Roland Kirk? Were they double tracking? Or am I just mis-hearing? Maybe they were double tracking: on another piece Wynton Kelly plays organ and piano at the same time but I think it's one hand on each instrument.
  23. I think Percy was on a retainer as Ray's writer in residence.
