Saw Charles Saturday afternoon at a memorial lunch for a mutual friend. He kept referring to her as having "left town". I'm not sure if most of the people there knew what he was talking about.

Another what? I like his writings but he's not one to let nuance get in the way of a good story. I especially feel this about Lush Life.

George Frazier. I remember particularly liking some very personal things he wrote for what I remember being a Billie Holiday Lp but I'm not sure.

I remember a critic who was into free jazz telling me that Evans was nothing special and played in a way common to lots of white players and if he had to listen to someone playing in that style he preferred Chick Corea. I knew he was an asshole not because he didn't like Evans but that he couldn't even recognize his distinct style. If you're a critic who doesn't see a difference in style between Evans and Chick get another job. (He probably would have said Keith Jarrett if he'd known he was white. )

The Mann is from a session on which Mann plays only bass clarinet issued as "Great Ideas of Western Mann". This selection was added to the cd release. Obviously he doesn't sound like Dolphy but didn't Ken McIntyre (sp?) play bass clarinet?

Speaking of Shepp (and changing the topic) anyone besides me get the download of his new kickstarter cd? I really like it though it definitely doesn't fir into what we're talking about here. The hard copy should arrive by the end of the month.
