  1. I think not legally in the US. And I think this set doesn't include everything controlled by Sony.
  2. Happy B'day and many more!
  3. In the US such EPs were 45s
  4. The best source I know is the interview that Frank Kofsky did with Bob Thiele for the "Coda" John Coltrane Memorial Issue(May ,1968-- an issue I still have). And it says the opposite. Coltrane and Thiele thought the first take was better but Coltrane took a tape of take 2 home. When the first take was issued Trane called Thiele and said he'd been listening to take 2 and he liked it better. So they used Take 2 which is labeled Edition 11 for future pressings. I love Wikipedia but it's often wrong. (As is every other encyclopedia.)
  5. you Tube never fails to amaze me. For reasons I can't remember I did a search for Pee Wee Russell videos and found aRed Nichols 1929 Vitaphone short with Eddie Condon singing, an excerpt from a Louis Prima shot with Pee Wee acting and and a CBC program with Helen Ward and Pee Wee. None of which I even knew existed.
  6. Just remember that I was at the Sun Ra at the Horseshoe recording in Toronto. In fact I think you can hear me saying something really stupid.
  7. I'm jealous that you saw Gil at Festival Hall. I do have the recordings of it and managed to sequence them correctly (I think). Also saw him later that year in Paris.
  8. Ted Curson at La Tete de Art. And a couple of sessions in Toronto that were really recording sessions with an audience: Don Pullen and Andrew Davis. Several rock concerts where at least a couple of cuts ended up on a record: Neil Young at Massey Hall and The Beach Boys at Massey Hall. John Lennon Live Peace in Toronto.
  9. Just ordered it from Amazon. At the same time checked out Dreadful Sanctuary and found this review: "I am a fan of Eric Frank Russell's stories. This was one of his best in the magazine version. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, he rewrote the ending for the book version, and he spoiled the story. I recommend that you try to find the magazine version -- you'll like it. And you will be surprised by its clever ending. (I would give the magazine version 5 stars.)"
  10. But I also thought that Knepper had recorded either this or the St.Nick's. Wasn't there at least one Bird Lp released that was from Knepper's tapes?
  11. Does that mean that Knepper got his tape from Benedetti or vice versa?
  12. What are (were) the 2 Charlie Parker releases on Debut?
  13. I'm surprised by how much I'm liking this. Wasn't that impressed when it first came out. (But I was so much older then....)
  14. I would say "yes" not just because Pete has proven to be reliable but also because his discography is on-line. I know that goes againsteverything you read but one of the big advantages of being on-line is that you can easily make changes when new research makes corrections necessary. I mean what are the going to do with the cd box: mail out new liner notes
  15. What's the running time on Ghost of Chance?
  16. I looked at the box set and it only goes to 1949 and I don't see Ghost of A Chance on disc 7. Is there another box set I'm not finding?
  17. There's a new Gil Evans homage by Mike Gibbs that's just come out: http://www.whirlwindrecordings.com/mike-gibbs-12-play-gil-evans/ I've ordered it from the UK and there doesn't seem to be any shipping charge. (OTH It hasn't arrived yet.) It gets a good review at thebluemoment.com
  18. A novel I read recently ("Rules of Civility") contains the following sentence: "Anyone in love or money was around the corner at Cafe Society dancing to swing. In another 20 years all the world would be sitting in basement clubs like this one, listening to antisocial soloists explore their inner malaise; but on the last night of 1937, if you were watching a quartet it was because you couldn't afford to see the whole ensemble,or because you had no good reason to ring in the new year." When I first read this I thought it was wrong then I realized I couldn't think of any records I had of quartets except the Benny Goodman Quartet from before 1938. What groups or records am I forgetting?
  19. Yes. It's great.
  20. "What'll I do". Also "Skylark" and "I'll Get Along Without You Very Well."
  21. Thanks for this. I didn't know he'd played with Cannonball (and apparently neither did the writers of most of his obits).
  22. Happy B'day!!!
  23. Happy Birthday! Hope it ended better than it began.
  24. Agreed. Bill Evans' Peace Piece rates highly, too... And the song on which it's based: Bernstein's Some Other Time. Evans uses the same opening chords on Flamenco Sketches.
