Is there a list of the Minton's recordings that have been released
medjuck replied to medjuck's topic in Discography
Thanks. This all helps though I'm under the impression that Monk doesn't play on any of the sessions with Christian. Doesn't sound like him to me. Does sound like it could be him with Don Byas. -
I've just been listening to the Don Byas "Midnight at Minton's"-- a great record. Is there a a list somewhere of all the recordings that were issued of the Minton's sessions and is there any received opinion about who's playing on them? (The Monk Discography I own has him on several numbers where no-one else seems to think it's him.)

Does anyone here have the existing cds? How is the sound?

What live music are you going to see tonight?
medjuck replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Dr. John last night. Best he's been of the 5 or 6 times I've seen him. Knocked me out by doing Charles Brown's "Tell Me YOu'll Wait for Me". -
I'm reading both Ted Gioia's The Jazz Standards and Will Friedwald's Stardust Melodies. Frieldwald gives the history and an analysis of 12 of "America's Most Popular Songs". All but two of them are amongst the 252 songs covered by Gioia. I'm having fun jumping back and forth between them. Also reading our John Littweiller's "Sundido".

Al Kooper "Backstage Passes"
medjuck replied to sgcim's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I read this and really liked it. IIRC he's updated it a couple of times. Not sure which edition I read. BTW One of the best rock autobiographies I've read is Tommy James' The Music, the mob and Me (or something like that). Morris Levy, owner of Birdland and Roulette records is a major character in it. -
Quote from the Mosaic site: If the cds they used were made from metal masters and transferred by Steve Lasker they're probably sound pretty good.

Your Mulatu Astake gig got a nice plug form Richard Williams on his Blue Moment blog. -
Someone smarter than me (virtually anyone on this board) might try searching for the earlier post that gave full details of every cut not included in the 2 Disk sony release.

I read several books in this series before I got to this one which is the first. IMHO it's the best and certainly the place to start.

Well, that would be about all of them, wouldn't it? Universal and Sony together control all the Brunswicks, Sony has the Victors and the Okehs. What's left? gregmo There's the Durium, Cameo and Plaza recordings. (There may be more.) Someone on this Forum gave a complete listing and said-- IIRC-- that they were controlled by Sony. Unfortunately I've searched but can't find the thread.

The best source I know is the interview that Frank Kofsky did with Bob Thiele for the "Coda" John Coltrane Memorial Issue(May ,1968-- an issue I still have). And it says the opposite. Coltrane and Thiele thought the first take was better but Coltrane took a tape of take 2 home. When the first take was issued Trane called Thiele and said he'd been listening to take 2 and he liked it better. So they used Take 2 which is labeled Edition 11 for future pressings. I love Wikipedia but it's often wrong. (As is every other encyclopedia.)

you Tube never fails to amaze me. For reasons I can't remember I did a search for Pee Wee Russell videos and found aRed Nichols 1929 Vitaphone short with Eddie Condon singing, an excerpt from a Louis Prima shot with Pee Wee acting and and a CBC program with Helen Ward and Pee Wee. None of which I even knew existed.

Live recordings you were in attendance

Just remember that I was at the Sun Ra at the Horseshoe recording in Toronto. In fact I think you can hear me saying something really stupid. -

I'm jealous that you saw Gil at Festival Hall. I do have the recordings of it and managed to sequence them correctly (I think). Also saw him later that year in Paris. -

Ted Curson at La Tete de Art. And a couple of sessions in Toronto that were really recording sessions with an audience: Don Pullen and Andrew Davis. Several rock concerts where at least a couple of cuts ended up on a record: Neil Young at Massey Hall and The Beach Boys at Massey Hall. John Lennon Live Peace in Toronto. -
My new book "Sundidos" has been published
medjuck replied to John Litweiler's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Just ordered it from Amazon. At the same time checked out Dreadful Sanctuary and found this review: "I am a fan of Eric Frank Russell's stories. This was one of his best in the magazine version. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, he rewrote the ending for the book version, and he spoiled the story. I recommend that you try to find the magazine version -- you'll like it. And you will be surprised by its clever ending. (I would give the magazine version 5 stars.)" -
Mingus "Complete Debut Recordings" set
medjuck replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
But I also thought that Knepper had recorded either this or the St.Nick's. Wasn't there at least one Bird Lp released that was from Knepper's tapes? -

Does that mean that Knepper got his tape from Benedetti or vice versa? -
