  1. Why do you blame it on the tube pre-amp? Sure sounds like the amp blew to me. I would hesitate to blame it on tubes in general. Never had any problems with well designed and serviced tube gear. After 20 years of reliable service, my Conrad-Johnson tube pre-amp is ready to go to the shop. It just needs new resistors/caps and it will work great for another 20 years. It it's place I'm using a 45 year old Heathkit tube pre-amp. My tube amp has given me 5 or 6 years of great music. I think tube gear can sound extremely good. They can require a bit more care depending on design. Test the tubes now and then. Make sure the power tubes are holding their bias. If tubes are not lasting something is wrong and a technician could spot it easily.

Don't become like those you despise. I'm referring to the posters who will bait you even more than they already have. Who cares about 'labels' anyway.
  3. Dude needs another woman.
  4. Hey, I think I see my ceedee player up there.
  5. You need to go listen to some gear at your local hi-fi dealer to get an idea of what's available. Listen to a low powered tube amp with good efficient speakers at some point. Off topic: That Decware tubed phono stage looks yummy. Dual mono, with outboard power supply and adjustable impedance and no circuit boards.
  6. June Christy: Something Cool (Cisco Records reissue) Nice album, but this is the second copy that is a lousy pressing. First one was badly warped. This one is too noisy. Will be sending it back. Newly arrived Clifford Brown Mosaic LP set. Sold my original Pacific Jazz title(Jazz Immortal) a while back, so I thought this would be a good way to get the material back in my collection.
  7. Listening to Angie Stone: Stone Love......During many songs there are 4-6 vocal tracks playing at the same time. It's like an SOP rather than an occasional thing. Then she starts talking and her voice is way out in the mix with nothing else going on. This stuff cracks me up.
  8. The Art Pepper Quartet: Art Is The Art (Vol. 1) Japan The Art Pepper Quartet: Art Is The Art (Vol. 2) Japan The Omegatape sessions. Sure starts out witha killer ballad: Summertime. Very nice to have a pianist with the energy of Carl Perkins playing with him.
  9. They look like good titles for 4 Men With Beards to license and reissue. Have you tried eBay for originals?
  10. These comments lead me right back to many of my previous posts. In so many modern productions of R&B I cannot get the message/emotion/soul of a vocalist due to the vocals being buried in the mix. Buried by drum machines and other studio tricks. I usually hear a very processed voice that drives me nuts. It really frosts me. That being said, Soul Sessions sounds wonderful and authentic production wise. The production reminds of 60's recordings by Sinatra, King Cole and others where the vocal are upfront and center, naked, so to speak. I think it should win an award for that alone!! I do not like rap, but I do like Beck who uses many studio tricks. The studio tricks of Jill Scott do not work for me. These are my preferances. I guess ours are different My comment about 'if she was black and heavy' is stupid, I agree. It was a bit of a joke and I prefaced it as such. Just something to think about.
  11. Wow!!!
  12. I do not think anyone said Joss Stone was great. I said I like her and the production(Soul Sessions) was close to perfect, for my tastes. Others said they liked the old-school approach. I am just happy to listen to an album that is not over-produced, and if she makes another one like it, I'll buy it. I will not buy another by Angie Stone, Erykah Badu, etc.. , unless they do the same. I listened to Jill Scott the other day and could not get passed the drum machine and muli-tracked vocals. What a shame, IMO. My loss, as I will not be purchasing her music.
  13. No shit!!! You were very lucky. This thread reminds me to send in my old(1985) Conrad-Johnson pre, that finally quit working. All I have in the closet is a cassette deck and one old, cheap amp. I usually sell or trade in stuff when it's served it's purpose.
  14. Totally agree!! One of the things, as I mentioned before, is the production of Soul Sessions. I'd love to hear some of the others get the same treatment or try the same thing. Drums(real ones), bass, guitar and keyboards. Drum machines, overlapping vocals(what a crime), etc. just suck the life from otherwise great singers. I'm afraid her 2nd album suffered this fate. Anyone notice the tasty guitar solos on Soul Sessions? What a unique idea.
  15. Yikes!! The last one went for $134(kicking myself) and I've seen others go for under $200.
  16. No record stores in the after-life? I like to think so.
  17. Runt Distribution(and their labels) sure has filled a niche for me. I believe they've reinvented quality, also. Both in packaging and sound. I own the following: Aretha Franklin - Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) LP Sonny Sharrock - Black Woman LP Otis Redding - The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads LP Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers - With Thelonious Monk LP Aretha Franklin - Soul 69 LP Aretha Franklin - Spirit In The Dark LP Herbie Hancock - O.S.T. Blow-Up LP Linda Thompson - Fashionably Late 180 gram LP Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me 180 gram LP Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - Reckless Burning LP Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - Oh, My Girl LP And these will be purchased very soon: Aretha Franklin - Live at Fillmore West LP Judee Sill - Judee Sill LP Judee Sill - Heart Food LP Albert Ayler - Holy Ghost 3LP(and the to be issued sets) Albert Ayler - Nuits De La Fondation Maeght 1970 Vol. 1 LP Albert Ayler - Nuits De La Fondation Maeght 1970 Vol. 2 LP Eddie Gale - Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music LP Eddie Gale - Black Rhythm Happening LP I wonder if the artists appreciate/notice the care their music is given by these guys?
  18. Lions Drag Strip, Long Beach, CA? The music of those cars rocked me to sleep on weekends.
  19. I'm probably the last one here to add this to my collection, but just in case.... The band consists of: 'Fathead', Joe Newman, Ernie Royal, Snookie Young, Frank Wess, King Curtis, Pepper Adams, Junior Mance, Kenny Burrell, Joe Zawinul, etc...
  20. Art Pepper: The Intimate Art Pepper (Acoustic Sounds reissue LP) Warne Marsh: All Music/Nessa LP (Hey, my first Nessa!!) Art Pepper Quintet: Smack Up (Contemporary LP Mono Original) $4.99 Hopefully, the vinyl is still nice. Worth a shot for the price.
  21. Some new to me that stand out: Bright Eyes: I'm Wide Awake It's Morning...Alernative folk? Pretty good stuff. Jack Johnson's 1st and last are great mellow albums, with catchy tunes out of the G Love school.
  22. Fixed! Time to find some Jill Scott.
  23. LMAO
  24. Not to stir up anything racial or weightal, but I could see her selling better if she was black and was a bit heavier. I got a scowl from a black friend when I asked him about her. I think I'll slip the CD in his car without him knowing who it is and then see what he says. Speaking of production, she sings one song backed by a keyboard only....that's it, for 7.5 minutes. Balls, and she pulls it off. If Norah Jones tried that she would put the planet to sleep, for a long time.
  25. I'll be picking up the first 3LP Holy Ghost vinyl set, soon. Someone, maybe Jazzbo, needs to tell Revenant vinyl is dead.
