  1. Miles - Miles Davis - Top Rank Japan (Rank 5066)- sort of deep groove- got this today, appears like the pressing dates from some point in the sixties. Has 61.4.7 on the rear cover in what looks like printed felt marker pen. Curious, music excellent of course with very good sound.
  2. I have the Monk/Coltrane OJC issue ( French Carrerre edition if you must know) , does the 2CD set discussed here improve on the slightly murky sound of the Monk /Coltrane quartet tracks ( which AFAIK only exist in mono). I'm delighted with the Monk's Music K2 disc but I don't have the quartet sides in a more recent mastering.
  3. Up for no other reason than me picking up Stop and Listen and Here 'Tis. Initial play suggests BFW own date is the better of the two , although neither is a s good as Face to Face . I have the latter on the Conn disc form 1997 and it sounds good enough , perhaps a little harsh when Fred blows- is this aspect better on the RVG ?
  4. Chuck's right these are fine releases . I have the LPs. Sound quality is excellent. Music is excellent. These will nicely complement the contents of the Mosaic box.
  5. Michael Brecker - Pilgrimage- Mobile Fidelity- nice session but avearge sound and pressing quality - good music, unimpressive product from Mob Fi - avoid it I would suggest and get the CD. Background noise, groove rubbing , mutliple crackles- nothing really bad , just not what you expect from an audiophile release. More like an average 80s pressing in mint condition if you know what I mean. Pity as the other two Mob Fids I have ( Art Pepper The Way it Was and Milt Jackson Invitation) are really excellent
  6. Good show . Thanks
  7. Yes , very much so if you have any interest in his music particularly as it comes from the 60s when he was relatively under recorded
  8. All that wonderful stuff! The October 28 1947 session. Yes, I'm very happy to have the Spotlight box set of the Complete Dial studio recordings. Is this the best reissue on LP of this material? Or were there other earlier issues of this material with better sound? Wouldn't know about that. Just bought the albums when they came out in the 70s. Anyone know how does the sound quality of the 1970s Spotlite LPs compare with their 4CD reissue? I'm tempted to get the CDs.. Spinning - 'Bite Hard - De Wolfe Sessions' (Barely Breaking Even Records) I have a four CD Japanese issue of the Dial recordings, and it sounds like it is a copy of the Spotlite box. I haven't heard the current combined Savoy/Dial CD box. The Stash 4CD set sounds good. Pretty comparable to Dial/Parlophone (ie UK pressings) 78s of the same material. 78s have slightly more vibrancy but also more surface noise (but that may be my set-up)
  9. Well I've always loved this session, better than Morgan's dates from a similar time.
  10. Excellent, anyone know any more details?
  11. May not be to your liking, but check out his playing on the Masada records. Masada is the only context in which I've seen him live, I have a handful of his own sides but they're not left much of an imprint on me. On the other hand i've never heard any thing I dislike.
  12. I, for one, love Duke Pearson. I so nearly didn't get the Pearson but finally relented, it's really excellent material , actually quite varied in style. The Phantom is killer BN classic IMO. It really is a most unexpected pleasure and has been played through several times since it arrived a week ago. I, for one, love Duke Pearson. 13. Like you Mike, I'm undecided. I have all the music on Japanese Vinyl/TOCJ etc. I would really like the select but my instinct says keep what I have. The music is however, essential. I won't be buying this one as I have all the material scattered across a combination of Conn Cd/ TOCJ CDs,/ BN vinyl and and Classic records vinyl, not as handy for sure but everything is covered and it's essential.
  14. I'll look out for this as i missed it first time around. Between the Lines did some very fine releases including a nice one by James Emery, and John Lindberg's A Tree Frog Tonality. Looking at AMG I had no idea Lindberg had that number of releases on Between the Lines- poorly promoted I guess
  15. I'm hoping the sound on Rag, bush and all will be improved. My LP although in mint condition sounds highly processed with little sense of space around the instruments, it's quite listenable but could do with a really good remaster.
  16. You'll love it and then wonder how you managed without any Threadgill for so long
  17. You mean: Just the facts and pass the booklet. I don't think that is part of this set- there were 3 Threadgills on that label- great sessions Punnin'. And a very nice pun it was! I knew that !!

  19. Enjoy ! Certainly glad I got the Pearson, that one holds together as a coherent set very well. Amy arrived here today, very good , even the organ sessions are well above passable
  20. The Stitt box is very nice but 9 discs is way to many , I can never tell which disc I'm listening to as most have pretty much the same formula. I won't be selling it though
  21. Good game for the Gunners amazing that the score was as low as it was given their total dominance. Mannone had so little to do but was surefooted in goal. I wonder if Almunia is getting worried.
  22. Could've guessed that based on your avatar. You ought to check out some Threadgill, really! Strong beautiful music, not fitting into any clean-cut categories... tubas, accordions, guitars and various other instruments in various bands... I'd not start with Air (that's more "classic" free jazz, though what the hell is "free jazz"...), but some of his later albums might be quite to your liking! Check some out on those free online listening sites (assuming there's some Threadgill there... I don't use these sites). btw, my Braxton just arrived and it's a number close to 2000 - I know they're not selling them by numbers, but if they sell several hundreds a piece, being in the 1500 to 2000 area with a 2008 release might indeed be quite a succes, no? My Braxton is 1517, bought this spring with the release of the Armstrong set. Roughly 500 sets sold in 6 months I guess. Threadgill set will be amazing I reckon , I'm surprised there isn't more excitement here regarding its release. I'll get it for sure whether Cindy is there or not.
  23. Best luck with the new job, we will all miss you a lot ( minor understatement).
  24. I'm another happy camper regarding the sound of the Columbia box set of Billie's sides, having compared relevant sides with the Hep Teddy Wilson CDs there are differences for sure but the Columbia set gets the nod in packaging, booklet ( or more accurately - book). I doubt the sound will disappoint most people. The Membrans I've come across aren't appealing, dirt cheap but to be avoided. I'd rather have one decent CD from Hep et al rather than 10 sloppy disc.
  25. that's going to be a big set, I have greatly enjoyed all the Threadgill I've heard so far. I think I've only got a couple of the sessions, so for me this will be a no brainer. Very welcome news.
