I'm another happy camper regarding the sound of the Columbia box set of Billie's sides, having compared relevant sides with the Hep Teddy Wilson CDs there are differences for sure but the Columbia set gets the nod in packaging, booklet ( or more accurately - book). I doubt the sound will disappoint most people. The Membrans I've come across aren't appealing, dirt cheap but to be avoided. I'd rather have one decent CD from Hep et al rather than 10 sloppy disc.

that's going to be a big set, I have greatly enjoyed all the Threadgill I've heard so far. I think I've only got a couple of the sessions, so for me this will be a no brainer. Very welcome news.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
by contrast I had none of it, indeed I'd avoided this material in the past but having now actually heard it I'm very impressed, a very fine set and nicely different from Pearson's earlier BN output. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Louis Armstrong Decca Sessions (1935-1936) Disc 5 , it amazes me that this material was thought not worthy of Pops ,it's all top , top drawer, not sure about Elder Eatmore's sermons (wonder how/why these came about) - a real oddity in a five star collection in very acceptable sound. -

the Xmas selections are a lot tougher than I expected, certainly not trite interpretations by any standard, I haven't listened to them thoroughly , saving that for xmas itself. Currently listening to Dizzy Gillespie Disc 6, universal edition, unusually for Mosaic the CD tray insert has track/personnel listings that are all wrong and belong to Discs 3&4 rather than 5&6. -
Love the cover of Nick Travis' The Panic is on this superb album, probably been out on CD courtesy of the Spainish at some point but mine's an HMV LP which I treasure. edited to remove link check Jim Flora site

Roy Eldridge- disc 7-( this was still sealed until a few minutes ago - bought the set 3 yrs ago !!!!) lovely session with strings, pales after more than a few tracks ,the following session with Ronnie Ball is effortless swing. Lovely, great sound. -
Why oh why oh why do I visit this forum, I'd not even considered the Pearson , let alone checked out the samples........hope i'm not too late....

both very fine sets, if I had to choose one it'd be the HRS, I think it has longer staying power. Meanwhile I await Shank/Cooper, Patton and Amy ( a late addition- given how much I like Katanga and Way Down.

Charlie Parker - Dean Benedetti Mosaic
Clunky replied to EKE BBB's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
All the recent noise regarding supporting Mosaic has me considering this set. I guess I must be a Parker fan. Not counted how many CDs I have but would expect it to be in the region of 30 CDs plus 10 LPs. My question is regarding just how bad the sound quality. How would it compare to Charlie Parker's sessions in Paris ( which in parts sound really terrible) or is it closer to Rockland Ballroom ( which sound pretty good to me) or for that matter any of the following which I have already ??? Boston (Uptown), Montreal (Uptown), Washington (Uptown), Boston ( Bluenote), Storyville ( Bluenote), Sweden (Spotlite) , ....etc -
I don't know how many original Argo LP's you've heard, but I've got many of them, and generally I consider them to be quality pressings. When the company changed hands in the early 1970's, the quality did go downhill. I've got original pressings of all three Shaw LP's, and they sound fine. I stand corrected. I was referring to more recent Argo issues.

Not sure if it's a needle drop, my entire system is dismantled at the moment , so I won't be able check for some weeks . I think I paid around £6 which was fine. The sound isn't a major problem when it's such a good session.

I got this Italian reissue quite recently along with an Argo original edition of Breakthrough . Both are very exciting dates and highly recommended. It's a wonder that they're not better known. The Italian edition of Debut In Blues has some slight speed instability ( sound occasionally a little wobbly). Anyone know if that's present on the original ? Most Argo LPs I've come across are defective in some way. Generally poor pressings.

Very few recommendations of his 70s/80s output, I have very little of this period other than a 2Cd set Sonny Rollins in Japan, good date but could have been trimmed to make a killer single CD. What would be top recommendations from this period?

I guess both fail in that they are highly imitative but quite fun IMO

Seems to work well. loads quickly on Firefox, good layout and easy on the eye, music samples would be good- but I see that they're pending, how about a link to Organissimo ? also a mug shot of you might be an idea or mini photo gallery of you and colleagues in action etc.

Flurin ,hope you get lucky with the Trio set, it's well worth all this trouble. I've been on a Mosaic listening spree, listened to chunks of HRS, Fuller,Turrentine, Brookmeyer Select, Hodges (2nd set) and of course Mobley, a very good set in great sound IMO.

Congrats.....we'll probably enjoy these "last gasp" Selects and big boxes all the more for the hassle that was involved in securing them. More concerning surely must be how Mosaic recovers from losing 12 Selects and 2 boxes prematurely. I hope this doesn't nix the Ellington box. I feel lucky to have secured the Shank/Cooper and the Patton sets. The others I either had ( Pepper, Brookmeyer, Pacific piano trio) , had in part (Gordon, Richards, Pullen, Amy, Green, Donaldson) or had no interest ( Slack, Pearson, Washington)

after posting this yesterday I dropped Mosaic an email bemoaning their loss and asking in vain if there was a Patton set kicking about. I wondered if in the chaos, underestimates of stock held might have occurred. Well amazingly I got a reply this evening , Cindy had a copy of the Patton select for me :excited: .... enough said, I am amazed to have been so lucky. No harm in asking.

PM mono not on Stereo: Only A Northern Song All Together Now Hey Bulldog It's All Too Much PM stereo not on Mono: Ballad of John and Yoko Old Brown Shoe PM Mono on the Stereo: Love Me Do She Loves You I'll Get You You Know My Name (look up the #) Let it be is also not on the Mono Masters set

Sound quality is very good on the Mono set, Beatles for Sale is way beefier than I ever remember it. I've not heard it for years but used to hear my brother copy a lot. It was never one of my favourite but this mastering/mix make it a more satisfying listen.

Woops..... I misread your post, regarding the mono sessions getting individual releases
