Notes per pound/dollar? I have a problem with this unless you are paying "primo" prices for the music. If you get pleasure, what is the limit? You're being grumpy again Chuck. Think "damn this is good, I wish it lasted longer than 37 minutes!" I believe that was my sentiment .... much like my feelings about "Grand Encounter" with John Lewis, Jim Hall, and Bill Perkins .. could there have been too much of that music? ... 32 minutes was not enough! That's the advantage of having this on LP , you can't tell how long it is. Just judge it by the music. In both cases but Grand Encounter is finer IMO

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
Clunky replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I hear you. I have just received the Berigan (#1961) and Miles '63-64 (#701) sets. My guess is that the '63-64 set was selling so slowly that Mosaic decided not to extend the pertinent contractual agreement. The Miles must be going out the door pretty fast, mine just arrived (#723) -
Chu Berry Mosaic Has Entered the Building
Clunky replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
better than on other issues I have of some of this material ( RCA LPs, Hep Cds etc). Perhaps some extra top-end might have made it better still but it's just fine -
And made in Germany!!! I've noticed a Okki Nokki RCM on ebay.uk for around £250 , significantly cheaper than either the Clearaudio smartmatrix (£450) or the VPI machine (£475). Anyone know if it's any good.

Thank's for starting this thread, I'm reconsidering my decision not to get the BJP Mosaic Select. I'd ruled it out because of complaints about the sound and because I thought I probably had enough Patton. So far what I have is.. Blue John Let it roll Along came.. Memphis.. Accent of the blues Boogaloo My favourite is Boogaloo. Does the select offer something different or more of the same? How bad really is the sound?

Weather Report Black Market CBS- not at all bad IMO

sounds promising, early in my voyage into jazz I attend in 1988 a concert of Bang Quartet with the wonderful Frank Lowe. I had heard of neither of them but was blown away. Always had a soft spot for Lowe's foggy metallic sound. I've not kept up with Bang and his Vietnam projects but really enjoyed a live Delmark CD on which he guested recently ( forget the name)

for me it was the CD issue of Joe Henderson's Our Thing, this was one of my earliest jazz purchases in the late 80's. The pianist really stood out for me, as being very different and interesting. Hooked on Hill ever since.

What was in the Serge Chaloff Box Set?
Clunky replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This session sounds better on the Hep Nat Pierce CD " Boston ..." if anyone's interested -
Chico Hamilton Trio Vogue UK DG Mono ( ex Pacific), mixed bag but interesting , very nicely recorded. Jim Hall shines rather more brighly than Howard Roberts. A few rather ponderous drum features. Strange this wasn't on the mosaic, not a priority to be reissued.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I listened to the clips on the Mosaic site the other day and I wasn't impressed. Lift music as far as I could tell. Perhaps their live session might be a better place to start. Right now ....Disc 7 Chu Berry.. Very nice set, the Calloway material is significantly better than expected but pales by comparison to the material with Fletcher Henderson. Transfers are very clean but perhaps could do with a little more top end. I compared "I hope Gabriel ..." from the Gene Krupa session with the transfers of the wonderful Hep discs "Hecklers Hop" issued under Roy Eldridge's name. The Mosaic transfers were in every way better, less surface noise, les distortion, , instruments more full bodied and a greater sense of space. The Heps don't sound bad but the Mosaic transfers are superior. -
The stuff around the main cones on my Castle Clyde speakers have gone. There's a big gap where there used to be foam/material. The cones vibrate and sound distorted at louder volumes. The speakers are now 20 years old. I guess speakers don't last for ever.

You're right - Sonny had no personal problem letting other musicians solo. And they're good pianists: mainly Jimmy Jones & Hank Jones, but also Dolo Coker and Harold Mabern. But the sessions were designed as showcases for Sonny for commercial reasons, so I blame the producer. I think it was mostly Teddy Reig. I really like the set, though I'm still not really into discs 4,5 & 6 yet - left them until last. And those are all with the Joneses. MG I like the set but in reality there is a high level of sameness to much of the material. None is bad and I do like Stitt but perhaps I should of stuck with the Verve LPRs I have. These offer similar material in a smaller lower calorie package.

This set is 99% Stitt
-
I like this one a lot. More vibrant than the Palmetto big band set

Very sad news. He was a master.

my Mono button on my Sugden does it for me ( for LPs at least)
-
Not sure, perhaps Chuck knows ? RCM manufacturers claim that it sticks to new LPs and its removal (from a new pristine LP) improves playback. No support yet for that claim from the feedback here, so far.

I am considering getting a Clearaudio Smart Matrix RCM (£450) to clean up a fair and increasing number of dirty LPs in my collection. I've had a few particularly dirty specimens cleaned for me and the results were spectacular in removing unwanted clicks and pops. My question relates more to mass of LPs I have, which are not obviously dirty. Will the removal of Mould release agent by this method make any significant improvements to the sound or is this just nonsense ?
