Recently got a DVD recorder, very neat as it allows for timed recording of radio broadcasts available on Freeview service here in UK. I like recording Jazz on 3 from the Beeb. Is there a good way of ripping the audio content from a DVD-R to allow creation of a CD-R. Playing the DVD on the PC and recording off the sound card is a possibility but I can't imagine the quality will be much good. Any ripper progs. out there that allow the audio from the DVD to be ripped to a WAV file.? thanks adrian

I discovered DM for myself in 1988. Ballads on DIW was my intro and I was swept away. Other strong DIWs and Blacksaints followed. Plus a whole load of cutout vinyls. In the last 10 years or so despite seeing Murray live I really haven't had the interest in what he's playing and find my self easily bored. Perhaps too much of the same thing is bad for the soul. Curiously I don't seem to have that problem with Lee Konitz or Lee Morgan, must be a David Murray thing.

near me there's a great shop selling 78s and LPs. Most 78s are £ 2-3 in very good condition. I bought a BN Art Blakey one the other day but they have loads as they buy big collections.
-
On the other hand , cheap LPs or CDs do allow you to widen your listening considerably. Most of the LPs I buy could be viewed as cheap, and almost all are spur of the moment ( backed-up by reasonable knowledge) choices. It is a constant battle to avoid buying mounds of really cheap stuff of limited interest . The other day I picked up. Dexter Gordon( Black Lion), Joe Venuti/Dave McKenna ( Chiasucuro), Earl Hines (Conifer), Joe Venuti (Decca), Duke Jordon (Charlie Parker Records) , Modern Jazz Trumpets (IAJRC), Benny Carter (Capitol) and three others for £15, can't be beat. I wouldn't have bought any of these at full price (save the LTD)

Canonball Adderlerly- Live in San Francisco- bought in 1987. £11.99 at the time, it's a Japanese Victor ( with yellow spine ) edition transfered in 1986 and still sounds fantastic. These Japanese CDs were available long before I saw and OJC series discs.

Many happy returns -
I've been taken aback in the past by liners to a number of Mosaic sets ( Kenton Presents, Woody Shaw ) dissing some of the contents of the box in question. It was almost as if the writer was saying to me you've wasted your money on this one and as a result took some off the shine of having a nice new black box. Now I realise that I value the honesty and integrity of the author far more. Honesty is the best policy.

AOTW - Monk with Trane - Complete 1957 Riversides
Clunky replied to GA Russell's topic in Album Of The Week
Admittedly, I've never heard the K2 release. I long ago stopped falling for the "remaster" hustle. In most instances, the original LP is best, and all the CD upgrades are just trying to get back to that. If your original LP is the mono version, it should be ok. In this case it is not just a question of different remastering of the same tapes. The K2 CD comes from the mono tapes, which used different microphone positions than the stereo recording. To me, the stereo version sounds odd, very distant and diffuse, whereas the mono recording sounds as immediate and dynamic as one is used to with Riverside recordings (both mono and stereo). In my view the mono recording should be the standard version, but it's the stereo recording that gets reissued all the time (OJC CD, Riverside set, SACD, now the new set). I recommend everyone to get the K2 CD while it's still around. I'm pretty sure that my regular OJC ( pre ZXY- German issue) release is mono and not stereo. -
High hopes for that as well. I have a great deal of this material via the two Columbia 2-CD sets and the Chronological Classics, but I'll bite on this set the week it comes out. It's gonna be a happy holiday season... I'm happy with the idea of having Mosaic box the Small Group sides but I was really hoping to see the full Orchestra sessions from the same era being released first. Been wishing for that one for years! Have all this material already (on French CBS vinyls, Classics, CD, etc...) but the sound on those does not do justice to the glory of the music! Hope Mosaic will rectify this! agreed but this should be a great set none the less, I'm in.

anyone have any observations regarding this one,

I was a little underwhelmed by "The Apartment" but I love the encounter with the Griff on the Carnegie HAll disc. I know its eighties but avoid the Round Midnight soundtrack , it's not very good IMO.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Clunky replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I miss those days too !! , the Selects are fine but have nothing of the feel good factor that the full size boxes exude. -
A cropped photo I took of Thomas Chapin at Glasgow International Jazz festival ( 1994?) died way too young , his music touches me and I'm pleased with the photo
