  1. Up for some more LT, latest additions to my collection include Fletcher Henderson 1950 Live- Trans Ark - Sextet with Thompson in great form , recorded for broadcast days apparently before FH had a CVA. Good sound, despite the bootleg like appearance of the LP cover. Art Blakey - Soul Finger LP (UK)- worth it for the one track that LT plays on. The rest is second rate Art for sure.
  2. From my haul on Saturday -Herb Pomeroy- Life's a may and splendored gig- Columbia (UK ex Roulette?) 1957- interesting stuff. -Don Ewell/Willie "the lion" Smith - Piano Grand- 77 Records- casual 1967 session- stride for 4 hands -Bobby Hackett with Vic Dickenson - Roosevelt Grill 1967- swingingggg -James P. Johnston- Rare 1920s recordings -Halcyon- not sure really how rare but good material, solos and small band mixed. -Buck Clayton- Songs for swingers- Phillips UK ( ex Columbia , 1958) -Capitol Jazz series Vol 6 - Metronome all stars-
  3. The Fabulous Ruby Braff- Phillips Minigroove (UK) ex Columbia (now on Mosaic set) Dave Pike- Oliver -Moodsville- not as bad as you might think- some excellent cuts
  4. Last night Earl Hines - Paris Session 1965- Duceret Thomsom- might be the best late Hine's I've heard Frank Foster- Frankly Speaking - Concord- these Concord vinyls sound fab. Nice tight swing session. John Handy - In the vernacular - Vogue 2Lp ( ex Roulette)- suprisinglt little talked about sessions. Very good.
  5. welcome to the big "O", hope you have luck with this one, I've never heard of him should I have?
  6. Free- Alright Now 7" single Johnny Richards- The Arrangers Touch (2 LP) Vogue Zoot Sims- Nirvana- Groove Merchant Henry Threadgill- Rag, bush and all- RCA George Wein , Newport all stars Midnight Paris 1961- Mercury
  7. Buddy Tate & Milt Buckner- Midnight Slows- Black and Blue, Tate plays mellow whilst Milts makes cheese. I gather there are another 6 volumes in the series, one's more than enough Red Mitchell- Bethlehem- (1980s French issues)- that's more like it Julian Adderley- In the land of HiFi- EmArcy (Sweden) 45rpm E.P.
  8. Joy of joys ,I picked up my first BN original ( of sort )vinyl Sidney Bechet Vol 1 , 12" LP with 47W63rd on the label, sounds significantly better than the EMI France CD of the same material ( mid 90s) my question is what is "Deep groove" that I've seen mentioned re BN Lps??
  9. I got this one from Chuck and it's pretty good- American Mythology on Okka
  10. I've got this CD and it indeed makes no sense what so ever> It features include some of the unedited Dynasty takes which appeared in complete form on the Mosaic vinyl box and the subsequent CBS 3 CD set of Mingus Columbia material.( Ah-um, Dynasty and out-takes) Whilst I'm all in favour of new material my preference is for the Ah-um session as original released over the extended versions in the 3 CD set.
  11. Modern Jazz Society is excellent whether it'sc alled Third stream or not highly recommended if you find it. C'mon it's got Lucky Thompson on it .....

    Charlie Rouse

Me too Brownie but I'd admit I prefer Ike Quebec's bossa offering on BN. The Rouse date has a rawness to the playing and sound that's highly appealing.
  13. I've just got this one and the Braxton Donna Lee. Only listened so far on the car stereo. Sound certainly is below par but quite listenable (not unlike the better parts of Holy Ghost)
  14. Benjamin Britten- Turn of the Screw (Decca)
  15. Earlier David Murray Big Band Vol 2 at Sweet Basil- Black Saint, now .....Frank Foster and Frank Wess- Frankly Speaking- Concord next up The Best of The Bobby Fuller Four ......
  16. If only for the track with Lucky Thompson I was well pleased to pick up in the local oxfam shop Art Blakey- Soul Finger- Limelight ( 1965 UK pressing- mono)- great track but the rest isn't really top drawer stuff. plus soem Cootiw Williams sides ( Octet and Bigband) with a.o. Bud Powell , Eddie Vinson ....on Affinity mid 80s issue, in pretty muddy sound. Includes the first recording of Monk's Roundmidnight. Pity the sound's poor though.
  17. I view the Byrd/Adams set in the same way as the Blue Mitchell set - both enjoyable throw- away BN sessions, not the stuff of legend, historical importance etc....... but when has that ever mattered....
  18. I got one of the Village Vanguard LPs ( forget which) on SS not very long ago, I have to say that the sound is very good and I can't hear any added reverb.
  19. Is this the same as the Jazztone lps ? Sorry no idea
  20. I too got this the other week, I think it has been on CD quite recently but the LP sounds very good. The same shopping trip saw me pick up McCoy Tyner 4*4 Quartets 2LP (Milsestone) - full of Tyner bombast which the vinyl carries over very well indeed and makes its all quite listenable. Other recent vinyl high hasve been a couple of Sammy Price/ Emmett Berry LPs recorded 1955/56 in France ( one on Pathe and the other on the dubious Musidisc) - great blues drenched stuff
  21. I picked up a copy of this disc, it looks like a boot with no details of date or personnel , any one help me with these details,??
  22. John Lewis P.O.V- Columbia Art Hodes- The Funky Piano of.... BN Liberty
  23. on browsing this site I came across the BN Jazzmen 2CD at a very reasonable price. In case anyone's interested (I've not ordered from these people before) BN Jazzmen OOP?
