    Davis S Ware Quartets

I've got Corridors and Parallels Go See the World whilst it's fairly visceral stuff I really lost interest following seeing his quartet in concert. They were so surly and moody on stage especially his highly regarded pianist. Clearly they didn't feel they needed the audience and so since i've not felt moved to try anything else. It doesn't hurt to smile boys....

    Kenny Wheeler

Kenny's chops sounded fine (to me at least) on the recent BBC broadcast celebrating his 75th Birthday.
  4. The two sessions I have on LP were released in the Uk as " Basie Roars Again" and " King of Swing" ( I think) both on the Encore label - which I presume to be a budget label. Both Lps are identical to Dance Session and Dance Session 2 LPs. Pretty routine material really doesn't stand out to me as being dance orientated. The material on Dance Session 2 is significantly better though
  5. what's with the way Parisean audiences react , I don't know this set but the Jimmy Giuffre set has loads of shouting from the audience- unclear if it's hostile or appreciative- must have been pretty intimidating for the performers !!!
  6. I've a couple of the Count Basie Dance Sessions on LP , the sound isn't particularly good ( distortion on louder passages), here's hoping it'll be improved on..................
  7. MC indicated that these two R&R tracks (have been around for years) were poor quality experiments and are not in keeping the rest of the session.

    March 1st RVG

I heard this in its first CD incarnation many years ago and thought it to be deadly dull, should I reconsider ?
  9. I thought this too re this version of B&S- very nice reading
  10. I've emailed Mosaic to see what they've got to say about this, will post reply
  11. from their web site.... This CD presents the complete master takes from the legendary 1957 "Omega Sessions". The first eleven tracks were originally marketed on two 7 1/2 ips reel-to-reel stereophonic tapes by the Omegatape label, between 1957 and 1958. "Summertime" was not issued until the early 1980's on Lp on the Nadja label in Japan. The two previously unreleased tracks appear here for the first time. However, both tracks are missing from the so-called "The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings" marketed by the Mosaic and Blue Note record labels.
  12. email today received from Fresh Sounds indcating a release of the Pepper/Perkins sessions of 1st April 1957 ( from this set !!) including so they claim two unreleased tracks " Blues Rock" and " Rock blues"--- what is going on, how can they legitimately release this and where have these unrelased tracks come from ????

    Martial Solal

If remember correctly he'd on one of the Jip Jazz Cinema CDs, Andre Hodeir, Kenny Clarke and of course Lucky T. A few years ago I tried ( and failed) to order a number of Solals on EMI (France) , can't recall titles but they were from the early to late 1960s.Not too much from this period seems to be available other than the disc listed above.

    Martial Solal

I'm really curious as to how the sides with Bechet sound, I gather from Brownies post that these'll be reissued too. The recs above are all top Solal

    Martial Solal

I tried a bit with this AOTW Solal gifted player and arranger, his name on any date perks up my interest, plus he played a lot with my favourite Lucky Thompson

    Don Redman

In my attempt to get a good view of the history of jazz I now find my self at Don Redman. Having scratched the surface of early Ellington , Fletcher Henderson, The Chocolate Dandies, Bennie Moten and Heny Red Allen I've arrived at Redman. Interesting material. Chant of the weed seems pretty advance arrangement for the time IMO. Vocalist Lois Deppe has a Cab Calloway like delivery whilst not being quite as super hip as Cabs ( ie more listenable). He's well featured on the wonderful Shakin the African(n)[/b (Hep CD 1001) where next McKinney's Cotton pickers? Anyone have a handle on what the second volume on Hep of Redman's is likely to contain?
  20. Earl Hines - Deep Forest (Hep)- very quiet vinyl not sure if this sort of material really sounds better on vinyl than CD but it's good Hines from 1932/33 in very good transfers.
  21. Duke Ellington Newport 1958- white label 6 eye- bought today for £1. looks very scuffed but it plays really pretty quiet- bargain I reckon. also got a Sammy Price LP recorded in paris 1956( reissue from mid 80s )with Emmett Berry and Guy Lafitte- going on next.
  22. Whilst Bird undoubtably lives it's curious that so few players play in his style now. Loads influenced but very few copyists ( that I know of) . A good thing really, as museum piece jazz is not for me. The nearest to Bird I've heard has been Jesse Davis ( but he's closer to Stitt IMO) last night spun Bird at Hi Hat , Washington Concerts (BN) and got thoroughly confused re the recording dates of the former.( discography in Uptown, Boston 1952 CD gives very different dates to those stated on the BN CD)
