  1. Thingin Hat-art (ology etc) with Konitz and Friedman is recommended
  2. Any takers for Impulse 51 Shirley Scott: For Members Only, one side her trio the other some Oliver Nelson charts for medium sized band added. Quite nice really.
  3. Eventually received my copy of Not Afraid To Live after too many weeks of waiting on the post. Wonderful toppling paino style, up tempo numbers especially different from the norm. Hewitt's liberties with the "Night in Tunisia" theme are extraordinarily bold and cheeky but it's a great ride. He certainly can play even if it's like no one elses conception. Top stuff Roll on Vol. 3
  4. thanks for the tip , received this set at what seems a very good price, it's visually stunning and the music ( most of which I've never heard) is out of this world. Might even help overcome my antipathy towards jazz singers !!! This is going to take a lifetime to absorb.
  5. I ve been very pleased to pick up these two Savoy 2LP offerings lately, sound is excellent. Brothers and other mothers... ( Serge C, Eager, Getz..) Cozy Cole- Swing Sessions ( with Ben Webster ,Oran Page etc) Canonball Adderley ( with Nat and Kenny Clarke)
  6. another , got this on LP quite recently for a few pounds very good plus Getz
  7. Michael Fitzgerald already provided the data... You're in for a treat! This one is MAGNIFIQUE! Discovered the date on a French MCA vinyl reissue. Later switched to a Japanese Decca reissue which has the best sound so far. Surprised that you still have to really get into McKusick. One of the most individual voices of the 50s and 60s. I rank him right next to Lee Konitz. At the top! His 'Jazz Workshop' RCA album is one of the two best of the series with the George Russell. And his quartet date on Bethlehem with Barry Galbraith is another stunner. That's good to know as I've ordered this and his "Jazz Academy" CD from Mr Tanno. Good choices?
  8. The McKusick thread got my interest up so I picked up the "Jazz Workshop " RCA CD- very good playing and arrangements- quite "brainy" but very interesting. On that disc I thought the quartet items were the best.
  9. Don't you nothin vinyl's coming back.....
  10. J on 3 is the business for sure, they dont get out of London often enough but what a resource. I've got 90% of the sessions broadcast since May 1999 on MD or CD. These are the most played sessions. Great stuff Jez... Workshop De Lyon- in Memory of Maurice Merle (4 July 03) Polar Bear (27 Feb 04) Tom Bancrofts Orchestro Interrupto (15 Oct 04) Ken Vandermark's School Days (16 Jan 04) Jason Moran Group (30 Jan 04)

That's the same as the Bethlehem (or Urania) cd Lon mentions. Excellent. I did not know that. GREAT side! Jazz Great- is superb but Lucky Thomson certainly isn't on it.

  13. Like Patricia said go for used vinyl. I replaced my broken turntable in Jan. of this year. It hadn't been used much over the last few years and my last purchase of vinyl was about four years ago. Since getting my nice Rega I 've bought around 200 used LPs. Covering a stylistic field far wider than I could have afforded if the stuff was bought ( and available on CD). Little has been "rare", no BNs etc but so much interesting music that really sings. I love my turntable.
  14. Sorry for that

There's also "Manhattan" on Soul Note- lovely version of the title tune. The 80s Contemporaries also V.G. plus but his work with Golson on various albums is for me the best stuff
  20. and these were issued already on ???
  21. I agree these guys are all top drawer. I wish I could see any of them live. Other jazz communities from NYC seem to get here across the pond but none of this lot. Too many favourites here but... Ron Horton's FSNT is very good ( and hardly mentioned) all the Herbie Nichols project material and I've enjoyed Ben Allison's (Nuclear tiger, peace pipe and the latest one, not forgetting Blake's Elevation (?) on Knitting Factory. Humidity by Wilson... ok you get the idea I really like this stuff...
  22. Got these two, super speady service. Thanks Chuck Only listended to the Triage disc so far, very nice
  23. KD was too individual a player to be forgotten, he's relatively easy to spot on record. He's perhaps my favorite trumpter of that era (save perhaps Brownie). There's a nice double page spread tribute to him in the current Jazz Review (UK) Dec 2004 by Brian Morton. It could be more detailed but it says all the right things.
  24. Brownie how's this one, I notice it's being reissued in Japna on CD . I'm on big Costa kick at present with the recent reappearance of a number of titles on Fresh Sounds.
  25. I really have no interest in re buying stuff I already have in earlier versions. I am tempted by Booby H's Happenings as I haven't even heard that session and adnire his BN stuff loads. What customs values are put on packages from Early records?
