    Funny Rat

Interesting. I'm not one to upgrade or worry too much about sound unless it's dreadful. The Columbia box is signficantly better than the Billie single Cd s released by them in the late eighties. If I remember correctly RT Davies, Ted Kendal etc. are among the engineers on the Columbia box. I have no complaints about the sound, and package is well worth it. Love it. Each to his/her own though...

Like this one as well (but haven't listened to it all yet - after all I have it only for three years ), but my favorite is Commodore Recordings double-CD set. I recently gotthe Holiday Columbia set at a good price thanks to a link here just before Christmas. The quality of these sides is amazing ,I would place the Columbia sides ahead of the Commodores which I've had for ages but never really shouted out their greatness as the Columbia sides with Prez, Wilson et al. do.
  3. Wow... indeed , lots of interesting stuff on tonight...

    Funny Rat

Likewise I've been going back in time lately and largely neglecting my rat studies. Recent purchases included Wally Shoup Trio- Blue Purge (Leo)- free blasting stuff -should be a keeper Archie Shepp- Trumpet in my soul- very mixed feelings- some good stuff but it comes across as a dated concept album. I note Penguin hates it. Ornette Coleman- Friends and neighbours (RCA) - poor audio on first two tracks but otherwise outstanding- must go back and listen again to Love Call I think the Shoup's the pick of the bunch by some margin. now back to Red Norvo....
  5. I ordered this disc a few days ago, Modern Jazz: The Essential Records tome by Nicholson/Thacker/Harrison etc rates this session highly
  6. Gail Brand made a good BBC Radio 3 broadcast a few years ago, it was pretty good as I remember but I'll need to unearth it and listen again.
  7. Rough'n' Tumble by Stanley T is IMO utterly lame pop drivel but then I haven't heard Hot Dog yet !!!

    Red Norvo

Recently I've been enjoying the follwing Red Norvo sides Dance of the Octopus (Hep) Wartime Vibra-tions ( IAJRC) LP His progressive side seems very interesting. Does any one know what the contents of his various mid forties Classics discs are. ?? The Modern Red Norvo 2 CD on Savoy seems to miss a take of two tracks ( Hallelujah and Congo Blues) is this correct and if so is their absense a significant omission. Anything else missing? any other recommendations? thanks
  9. Thanks for the kind thoughts, the children are now in bed so it's just me and Billie, Bill Evans, Larry Young, Bob Brookmeyer and Fletcher Henderson......and a bottle of Super Bock
  10. Many thanks Flurin p.s. some Brotz on it's way to you at long last- sorry for the delay
  11. 1992- Herbie Nichols set- I was bowled over by that I received that day in June. still one of my favourite sets. I ordered it as I liked Sun Ra's piano playing and read that his style was similiar to Nichol's !!

    Bill Hardman

There's a nice Dodo Marmarosa set on Argo with Bill Hardman given plenty of room. It's a fairly subdued session but worth hearing.
  13. I got my P3 a year ago and love the sound it gives

    Clarence Profit

Anyone heard of Clarence Profit , a friend said he was a talented player who died young. Played in an advanced swingstyle with stride leanings. I've never heard of him although I did find this... Jazz Info VOL. I, NO.2 SEPTEMBER 19, 1939 TEN CENTS NO PROFIT FOR GOODMAN Clarence Profit, Negro pianist who was expected to play with Benny Goodman, is apparently out. At this writing, it seems certain that Profit will not join the trio. No explanation for the break has been given, though rumors suggest incompatibility as the cause.
  19. Yesterday got Count Basie - Count Basie Story RB-1 (roulette) near mint 2LP set in box with enormous booklet by Feonard Leather, whole thing very quiet, good value at £6. The playing is good enough it's only a pity the charts weren't updated ,not one of the best Roulettes I've heard but not bad.
  20. The sound on the " CD set is way better than one the late eighties single CD "Bebop Revolution". This single CD sounded really flat and additionally a number of the tracks were given the wrong titles.!!! Either way the music is classic, I also really enjoy the big band sides on the "Bird & Diz Carnegie Hall concert 1947 CD on Bluenote- great playing and competent sound.
  21. Woody Herman- Big band Goodies (Wing) - out-takes from various Phillips' sessions 63/64. Swingin....
  22. I used to record broadcasts on FM to hard drive but recently have had a number of problems with the PC crashing or the data containing audible glitches. It doesn't happen every time but its annoying and unreliable. Haven't installed new software , there's plenty of spce on the HD and no other programmes are running. I now make MDs of the broadcast as back up.
