  1. Now John Williams Trio Emarcy 10" LP, highly enjoyable despite torque problem? on the inner grooves ( last track on each side) in which the tuning of the piano sonds decidely off the mark.
  2. from the local oXFAM Andre Previn-West side story- Contemporary (UK) Mono Thelonious Monk - Townhall Concert- Riverside (Interdisc UK Mono original) Johnny Dankworth- What the Dickens Fontana (stereo) - who's who of UK jazz from 1963 have a moment or two in the spotlight, good stuff not bad for £12 all in , especially as they're all in immaculate condition
  3. Al Cohn- No Problem- Xanadu Martial Solal- Suite for trio- MPS (Spain)
  4. Ok, so this 10" just arrived, musically very interesting shades of energetic Bud Powell but he's also got something of the same approach that makes Eddie Costa standout. Vinyl seems in good condition ( no marks at all) however there's plenty of surface noise and the speed of the disc sounds defective ( either that or the piano was out of tune). It remains quite listenable. Anyone else know if the speed wobble I'm hearing is heard, on other pressings of this neat session ??
  5. Richie Kamuca- Richie - Concord - wonderful session Jaki Byard- Sunshine of my soul- Prestige ( recent purchase from Mosaic on 150gm vinyl) weight of vinyl seems ordinary but pressing in this series are very quiet- recording quality of this particular session is a little muddy. Zoot Sims - Plays George Handy- MFP Mono-( 1958?) Zoot multi-tracks with wonderful John williams in support. Music not quite as wacky as you'd expect from hearing Boyd Raeburns versions of this material
  6. I paid £44 if I remember correctly ( from a regular dealer who had great difficulty getting it), it seemed pretty steep , but then as now I was really keen on LK so figured it was worth it.
  7. Konitz might be of interest, I have no connection with the seller
  8. Joe Newman- With woodwinds (Roulette) Mono deep groove ( copy pretty worn)- Basie orienated personell deliver pretty Erniw Wilkins arrangements, some nice soloing form Joe, not much else happening though
  9. I was aware that the first batches of Conns were pretty special. Despite ordering them through a specialist CD store I still only managed to get half of them or less ( distribution to stores seemed to be non existant). Likewise for the WCC series, these seemed to be impossible to find ( in the days prior to the web)
  10. rather nervously put a toe into ebay and got John Williams Trio, EmArcy 10" Australian pressing !!( supposedly in excellent condition) all for $9 ( double that with postage) Tried bidding on few other items but was outbid with seconds to spare, with fairly ordinary sessions on vinyl going for inflated sums ( beyond their worth IMO)- not sure I'll both much with ebay
  11. From a heap of (many classical LPs) bought at the weekend from a charity book sale , a near mint copy on heavy vinyl of Bob Dylan "Self portrait"- one seriously weird album , spotty to say the least , highly inconsistent but worth hearing- perhaps that's why it's condition is so good. !!!
  12. Like others here I majored in Elvis in my youth. I've all his albums ( on LP)up to his contract with Warner, things get a bit spottier after that, I've always been very fond of "Ten bloody marys and ten..." and "This Year's model"
  13. ditto got mine yesterday from Bob, thanks
  14. Wouldn't make any difference with me, I'm entirely happy with Chuck's use of my CC details but Paypal ( which I rarely use ) I'm sure would be fine. For obvious reasons I can't send a cheque.

Only heard Jabbo Smith very recently , 1929 sides with his Rhythm Aces, (Decca LP) he displays staggeringly attack and control and IMO far more interesting than what Louis was doing at the time (L.A. 1930 sessions).
  16. Brew Moore- Sonet Poll Winners- Ride Again - Contemporary (Mono) Buck Clayton- Buck N Boogie- Vanguard/Fontana Johnny Hodges- Vol 1 on Verve Chronological - Verve (F) reissue Jazz Mission to Moscow- Ghent - reissue, with my fave Eddie costa
  17. Not alone. I now find it quite easy to ignore all EMI jazz issues and reissues. I don't even consider them. It's not as if there is nothing else in the shops. Likewise, since its introduction in 2003 I've only bought a handful of EMI discs from the US and none here in the UK. Lost sales, but I'm not sure if they care !!
  18. forgive my ignorance but, was Jimmy Blanton in the band by this point ?
  19. Sun Ra- Live at Montreux- Inner City 2LP ( new for £5 from Fopp !!) Sun Ra- Magic City- Saturn ( also new today £5) John Coltrane & Don Cherry- Avante-garde- Atlantic ( again new today £5) Fopp had other Coltrane Atlantics all at £5, not sure of any mastering details or even country of origin but pressing seem fine.
  20. It's a boot of two Groove Merchant dates ( both incomplete)
  21. David Murray- The Hill- Black Saint ( lite vinyl or what ?)- good session none the less Martial Solal- Bluesine- Soul Note John Stubblefiel- Confessin- Soul Note
  22. Last night amongst other things, I was spinning some Earl Hines Decca 1934 sessions- boy does he swing really hard, did Hines ever have an off period in his career?? Paris 1965 solo session (Ducuret Thomson) remains my favourite LP session.

    Anthony Braxton

I was listening to the earlier standards box set whilst applying undercoat to some shelves and my fingers, it's a great set, the whole approach including the apparently "busted chops" that some find irksome is IMO deliberate and a considerable success. Hugely enjoyable
  24. I doubt you'd get a tube amp and CD player speakers at under £1000. Rotel get pretty good write ups and might be worth considering. If it was me I'd probably spend £500 on the amp and split the other £500 between the player and the speakers.
  25. Young Louis- Louis Armstrong 1932/33- RCA (France) Jazz Tribune 2 LP- patchy collection of RCA sides, Satch's slide into commercialism started really early but these are a mite tougher than I'd expected. The transfers in the whole Jazz Tribune series seem to be excellent and this one's no different. Their time will come , oh yeah! obscure grouping of unknowns ( to me that is) on Revelation 11, 1969
