  1. agree with Wolff , never have I learnt a thing from a five minute demo of some hi-fi equipment. Live with it for a while , then remove it and go back to what you had a see then what's missing. Works for me.
  2. got mine yesterday !!! whoa ... ah.. great presentation, huge box ,attention to detail unprecedented, music...only lieten to discs 1 and 2 . Given the sources the sound quality is quite good really and the music it self never less than involving. Many hours of exploration ahead...
  3. Jazz Europa- Stan getz with Martial Solal 1958 4tets and 5 tets, all recorded very nicely, live, not sure of the real provinence of these recordings. There is also a stray track by Bobby Jaspar/Donal Byrd 1958
  4. thanks for all the helpful advice
  5. Anyone else interested in Fletcher Henderson.......I've had only limited exposure to his work the form of the Hep " Wild party " Cd, sessions with Red Allen etc. Very nice pre-swing material. Exciting in the same way as Bennie Motens late band. Any way any other henderson recommendations and what reissue series. What are his key sessions ? I'm aware Classics has put out a lot of CD s but transfer quality is poor. Anyone know if the Naxos disc(s) are good place to go next. thanks

    Anthony Braxton

I find my opinion re the 4CD standards box (Leo) changing, as time is passing I seem more bothered by the sloppy tracks and REALLY wish they had been omitted to make a 2 or 3 CD set.
  7. None I understood the quality of transfers to decidely iffy ......I'll stick to Heps, etc
  8. this is my view , otherwise we'd get lobbyist for a Smooth jazz forum etc the appropriate forum is New releases

That's the only problem, yes. But when you only search the recommendations forum and chose "post results as posts" or how that's called, you find everything pretty fast - that's my experience, at least. Will have a listen to the Melford/Bennink, then, as soon as I can! I picked it up in a hat-sale - still have many I never heard... many thanks for that
  10. Herbie Nichols Project Ben Allison of the no longer possible I wish I could have seen Konitz/Marsh or Marsh/Brown

try Eric Boeren's Soft Nose on Bvvast Ornete Coleman Classic Qtet witha slightly lighter touch, decent stuff but sure it advances enough on the originals

Anyone know where this CD can be got this side of the pond. Janssen is a very special pianist indeed. Very quirky originals , he's very aware of jazz history and has special affinity for Monk/Nichols. Also a heavy Tristano influence, his stuff is darn hard to get hold of ...

I would say it is - though the crazed moments are more frequent on their live outings. I find all of their albums to be beautiful in their own way and greatly enjoyable. One thing though - the selection of pieces on Rara Avis is really unique and works very well, one has to move to that Tico Tico. The only one I have by Clusone is " I am an Indian too" on Gramavision, really like it. Not sure how it compares with their best, as I recall Penguin doesn't rate it too highly.

as is the follow up "More news for Lulu", sound is a little thin and liners hard to read but good session.
  16. when's the Mosaic LP set out?
  17. I recently picked up an LP of Vol 1 of Red Allen on RCA France. Stuff from 1929/30 from around the same period he was with Russell. It's astonishingly modern sounding , really invigorating and therefore highly recommeded. I keep on promising myself to get the Russell 2CD set on Retrieval- one day soon....
  18. I like this one a lot, pretty intense playing, his tone on alto is quite grating really but the intensity of the playing makes this release highly absorbing. Covers a very similar territory to Panoptic modes by Vijay Iyer.
  19. Just received this, I noted with interest that the liner mention that the tapes from the "Right Combination" session were originally high quality stereo but that Riverside only ever released a mono mix in inferior sound. Anyone know if these masters still exist or have any chance of being released.?
  20. Anyone heard the Angelica Sanchez lead date on Omnitone featuring Malaby
  21. the Schuller is excellent, not really much of vehicle for Malaby but a very interesting set. Might appeal to funny ratters.
  22. Earl "Fatha" Hines- A Monday Date- nice swinging date- produced and liner notes by our own Chris A.
  23. Dave Pell- Prez Conference GNP-Crescendo- 1978 Bill Holman arrangements of Prez asscoiated numbers
  24. anyone know where the Gil Melle might be had?
  25. what's the sound quality like on the freeview box, better than FM ? Jazz on 3 is a great source of quality modern jazz, we're lucky to have it.
