  2. Thanks for this , the Crown Hawk material is excellent. Picked an Eros LP pressing of one half of the date at the local Oxfam shop this weekend, very nice it is too, surprisingly quiet. I'm amazed (once again) what a poor review Penguin and AMG give this material.
  3. He gets some decent space on the Lionel Hampton sessions with Lucky Thompson on board
  4. The Fabulous Lionel Hampton and his All Stars- Concert Hall BJ 1238- sessions with Lucky Thomson, Oscar P et al. Includes some mis-titling such as "Time for Lyons" and "Raindeer". very pleased to pick this up as any of the LH with LT sessions have alluded me so far.
  5. one (at least) of the Crown Hawk sessions has been out on CD from Ace/Boplicity records in UK. THe sound is fine. chceked it's Hawk Swings CST224 issued 1991, five tracks - Cloudy Almost dawn Stake out Cross town Shadows
  6. And I got mine today! Exactly as Ed described. $19.78 including postage. I now have holiday listening plans... and the deal of the century. Woohoo! edit: Thanks, Clunky, for the tip off! Got mine too , it's a euro mosaic made in USA and for some curious reason the spine is mis-titled, we all now know that it should read "The Jazztet Concert Jazz Complete Argo/Mecury recordings".
  7. The Incredible Ira Sullivan (Stash 1978) is pretty good for an over dubbed LP, sadly I don't know the Flying fish date ( not available on CD or LP I presume).
  8. amazon.co.uk have this dwn for release Jan 2005, is it actually available elsewhere?
  9. Booker Little-Time (new vinyl)- sound not bad, some tape wobble on one track.
  10. Well they've been laboring under the notion that it's a single disc all along. Doesn't mean they're right! My fingers is still crossed... same here as I too took the plunge< if it's not the complete Verve Jazztet records then I can always return it at their expense. Mind you amazon.de had those ultra cheap Mosaic Shorter/Morgan Vee Jay sets which turned out to be some ambient/noise disc .
  11. Johnny Dodds - Complete RCA(F) 2 LP after some fairly lame jug band stuff the utterly sublime Wolverine Blues Jimmy Hamilton- Jazz Kings- undated session inc. Clark Terry and Oscar Pettiford- very good session ( Urania original ?)
  12. no, the RVG cymbal solo controversy
  13. Alyn Shipton is doing an excellent three part series on Hawk on BBC Radio 3 at 1800 on Saturdays, final instalment next Saturday. Not sure if it's available over the net though try hereBBC jazz page
  14. Recent haul including Gerry Mulligan Sextet_Line for Lyons- Mercury Interantional 1965 ( actually seems to have a number of quartet items on it) Bud Shank- Plays todays movies ( approx. title) WP-Liberty- some complete dross but not as commercial as I'd expected Houston Person- Very Personal Muse - Totally gross cover art but nice playing inc. Fuller, Walton etc. Very good sound from RVG.
  15. Picked up Louis Armstrong "Plays W.C Handy" LP, red 6 eye Columbia label with 1B and 2A ending the stamper numbers. I'm not entirely sure what these mean but the whole Lp is amazingly clean and the cover unmarked ( not even yellowed or worn at the corners. vinyl is silent, Not bad for £3. Anyone know what the stamper nos mean?
  16. too good to be true? anyone ordered and received Jazztet set at this price
  17. Funny rat has this one covered ( or mentioned at least). It's a very tasty album indeed. Picked it up on the strength of some excellent soloing by Buis with the remarkable Tom Bancroft Orchestro Interupto ( with Geri Allen) Elements of Sun Ra I thought. Lots of depth so I've not got the full measure of it yet but recommended for accessible yet adventurous listening.

    Funny Rat

I couldn't find the track called "dashit" but there are plenty of others. It's a virtuosic display of all the different sounds you can make with an alto sax. Not wishing to commit rat blasphemy but I'm still out to lunch on this one.
  19. Jim , best wishes to you both. Little that I can add above what DrJ has said but that there are good Drs to be found everywhere. The system you describe sounds quite threatening which can't help.

    Dave Pell

"Prez Conference" GNP Crescendo- features some good Bll Holman charts with pell's octet including Sweets Edison and Gordon Brisker doing their stuff to "update" Lester's solos on some classic Young material. Nice
