I had the same feeling about Gerry Hemingway Quartet “Devils Paradise” (Clean Feed) - excelent musicians (Eskelin, Dresser, Ray Anderson), good compositions (clever post bop, slightly out-ish), strong solos - but I couldn't help thinking - "what for? this has been played already thoudsand times" ... probably just too safe for my tastes. I like the Varner and have just ordered the Hemingway !!

Tal Farlow Mosaic set released in Europe?
Clunky replied to andersf's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Tal from UK these guys are cheaper -
the only snag with this session is that it presents unedited performances of a large number of takes. I suspect a set with the masters, as originally issued plus worthy alternates might have been better. nice set in small doses none the less I have the same feeling regarding the Mingus Columbia 1959 sessions ( 3 CD box), how can you improve on the originals ????

I remember a lot of excitement about this one on the old BNBB, I picked it up and was highly engaged initially but can't quite say why it seems to have out stayed its welcome. There are some great tunes and it swings like hell,,,,,,,hmmmm

I assumed this was deliberate

for this set. Not sure it really needs to be 4 CDs. There's no fluff though and the sound is very good.

I caught Noah Howard and Bobby Few in concert a week or so ago. I'd never seen either before. Few was plastered, and barely made it on or off the stand. He receiveda big cheer at the end of the concert based largely on the fact that he hadn't collapsed. During the sets he had to be grabbed by Howard to get him to either start or stop playing !!! When he played though, he played like an angel. The two sets were highly repetitive soul/free jazz. Some "tunes" were played 3 or 4 times. Initially I was enchanted but rapidly wanted to leave to releave my boredom with the proceedings. Howard sung a fair bit, the beat remained constant. Just one long blues/soul vamp with egocentric lyrics. Howard put alot of energy into it and was rewarde by a delighted if undiscerning audience. Unfortunately there were 2 encores before I could escape. Funny rat gone bad

Zweitausendeins sent me the "Complete Prestige Thelonoius Monk" when I had ordered one of those bin-end Art Tatum sets. Whilst I was disappointed not to get the Tatum I was delighted with the Monk set.

as by chance I've been spinning "Have no fear" all week in the car, and whilst his phrasing and tone is an acquired taste, once you've got it...... ....So I ordered this one to get a flavour of what Vonski is like now.

I really enjoy listening to my vinyl as vinyl. Admittedly none of it's rare but even if it was was listening to a CDr just wouldn't give me that vinyl feel good factor !!

anyone care to comment on the qualities of the recent Davis vinyls on Mosaic, I'm mightly tempted to treat my turntable to the upcoming box ( Seven steps 1963/4) but there will of course be a significant price differential compared to getting it on CD, any thoughts?

I found this curious on checking the Mosaic site, Note: The Columbia CD "Blowin' Up A Storm" (C2K 65646) uses an alternate on matrix 36778 which is not included in this package. It differs only from the issued take by a slight clam in a trumpet passage and a noise (Stravinsky's baton?) in the beginning of the second movement. so does this mean there is an alternate of Ebony Concerto previously released that Mosaic haven't included in this "Complete" set ?? Odd ?!

AOTW Aug. 29-Sept. 4 -- The Best of Early Basie
Clunky replied to Spontooneous's topic in Album Of The Week
Big omission I know but I don't have any Basie Columbia material, what's the best source, the 4CD box, vinyl ? or just wait for Mosaic to give it the treatment like it's done for Herman? -
Ah..so she does......now for JG, where did he get those glasses ???

this one from Thad, no sure who the this lady is on the cover though?

Count Basie- King Of Swing (Encore mono) 1953 sessions on the UK Encore label- culled from Verve archives. Basie gearing up for his late 50s peak.

Look at all that Lucky Thomson material.. ooooooh if only........

sorry not familiar with that box. I did note a few weeks ago that Beatles vinyl ( new) was marked on the back cover as being mastered from a digital source which seems pretty pointless. My Beatles vinyl is from late 70s/ early 80s pressings which are very variable, the white album is poor but With the Beatles and their debut album are great pressings. Best of all is my Revolver (mono, 4th pressing) , hardly rara avis but has great presense despite 40 plus years of regular play.

another brief and non eloquent for Frank, Received this disc only recently and it's a sublime piece of work. Frank sounds like his own man, can't wait for Vol 2. Did Frank compose much ?

I've used a MD recorder ( ultra cheap Sharp model- built in timer to allow programmed recording ie night time) for the last 5 years or so to record radio broadcasts of jazz on the good old BBC, only recently have I changed to recording to my harddrive directly and burning a CDR from there. MD by comparison sounds nearlyas good and is far more user friendly. I've not explored MP3 but don't feel the need to carry around thousands of compressed music files.
