  2. what do you mean by this grouping- perhaps my lack of knowledge but these seem unlikely bed fellows
  3. I'm interested in this one too. Likewise I enjoyed the Hersh's Village Vanguard trio set last year and also admire Malaby's own work.
  4. there was bit of this band on BBC radio 3 Jazz on 3 last week, sounded excellent.
  5. I quite like the Freefall: Furnace set . It's a fairly subdued set , good if you're in the mood for free but subtle playing. Wiik is an amazing pianist. He's playing at the Edinburgh Jazz festival in july and I'll be sure to catch him.
  6. I've been playing Kevin's one in the car for some weeks now. Of course I'm biased but I do think it's a strong session with some interesting writing and arranging. Folk and jazz in equal measure. Phil Bancroft (tenor) and Chick Lyall (piano) get some good solos and cut loose to great effect. Bev will like this one. Reminds me in a way of Trovesi's " Round about a midsummers dream"(Enja) Phil's disc is due soon, not sure the exact date and it too will be one to hear. I've seen his band quite a number of times and they're pretty hot. I'm excited about this one but haven't heard it yet.
  7. This band is so good. see 'em
  8. don't know this one, perhaps I should........... Generally I prefer Basie without singers and have only a limited tolerance for Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing etc

    Ben Allison

Hey guys what about mr Allison, I was initially shocked by Peace Pipe as some kind of world jazz sell out but it's grown on me considerably. Compared to Riding the nuclear tiger its a much tamer affair, lacking the grunt power that makes RTNT so appealing. how does Buzz stack up?
  10. I hear it now !!!!! , hadn't read the liners the remaining male vocalist on tracks 18-23 are stilted and only just transcended by some nice instrumentalists- Worth trying for £3
  11. recently picked up Red Norvo- "Dance of the octapus".on HEp A mixed bag this one with some Bunny, Artie but also some truly dreadful vocals. It's a long CD so there's enough of interest but hardly compelling. A female singer called Mae ???? is histerically bad, with a childish intonation what nearly made me crash the car it was so bad. Quite funny once I guess.
  12. see Funny Rat for extensive discussions I finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago for this set and it's been a revelation for me. Sound is perfectly ok on most of the tracks

    Thomas Chapin

there's some discussion of Chapin in the Funny Rat thread. The entire KF box set (Alive) of his stuff is consistently good. I feel priviledged to have seen him live- check my avatar (photo taken by me at Glasgow jazz fest)
  14. Coltrane and Monk at the Five Spot
  15. all my Elvis Costello, Rollingstones and other LPs sound significantly better than their CD counterparts. Why did I give up on LPs so easily !!!!! ( poor pressings and cheap TT) Not sure how much I'd have to spend to bring the sound of my CD up to my relatively humble Rega P3. Probably £1500 plus
  16. Lionel Hampton "More Hampton's stuff Vol 5" RCA France - rag bag of small group sessions from 38-40
  17. A local store has a few of these fairly cheaply but the AMG description doesn't sound too appealing!! Fletcher Henderson "Wild Party" on Hep is highly recommended , some fine Red Allan, Hawk, Webster and proto swing stuff, really interesting historically and great music too.

    Tina Brooks

there's plenty of love for Tina in these parts
  19. Chew Berry on Commodore !!!
  20. Jubilation is my favourite track, it's perhaps a little corny soul-jazz number but it always worked for me. This album's a delight. Bill Evans certainly got around, didn't he, in his early days.
  21. Some of these tracks are ,I think , on the 5CD Self Portrait Shaw set that came out a few years ago. It was my introduction to Shaw and I am hugely impressed. Recently picked a Hindsight LP (Vol 5 1938/9, broadcasts in great sound) , again amazing strong stuff. Any opinions re the Hep 3 CD set from 1944/5. I have no idea what's on this disc but am guessing some there's some Eldridge and Marmarosa ( and hopefully limited vocal numbers !!!)
  22. this is a fine release, it's not a knock-em-dead-on-first-hearing disc but it's very persuasive over the longer course which usually means for me that it'll continue to get plenty of play. Interesting to hear a different version of the Reid Anderson composition that appears on his "abolish bad architecture" FSNT disc. Recommended.

    Funny Rat

I know that this has been taked of before but I only received last week Taylor's Willisau CD ( after a long delay) How represenatative is this of his work, because it's stunningly beautiful ,much more melodious than I expected. Sound quality is superb.
  24. I got really hooked on Solal as a result of his playing with my favourite Lucky Thompson. The Vogues have been mentioned and although they are good and certainly a cut more daring than many european pianists of the mid 50s , they dont quite reach the heights of some of his later work. Sans tambour ni trompette- 1970 ( RCA)with JF Jenny-Clarke and another bassistGilbert Rovere is pretty startling record by any standards. I love what the bassists do on this recording. Apart from Newport 63 any other recommendations from his 60s output?
