  1. Not heard of that label. Looks interesting. The Bop violin CD appeals to me.
  2. Very sad . Great pianist and composer .
  3. This is a fine LP
  4. Bud Shank/Clare Fischer/Joe Pass 'Brasamba' (Pacific Jazz), I played my Liberty reissue from 1981 tonight. It's a decent session with perhaps too much flute. Anyone care to compare to their other title " Bossa nova jazz samba" ?
  5. Eddie Henderson ------Sunburst---------(Bluenote) blue label , 1975, much better than you might think. Quality fusion , touches of funk and just the correct side of cheesy
  6. Played lots of 78s over the past few days, as ever a wide mix of sides , occasionally swapping stylii around to see if it makes a difference . For some labels it does and others not much. One that has benefitted is one of my favourite 78s Billy Eckstein (sic) with Deluxe All star band -------I've got a date with rhythm/ The Four Blues---------I couldn't hear nobody pray------(Delux 1003) The Billy Eckstine side is wonderful big band with Wardell , Dizzy, Freddie Webster, Oscar Pettiford a.o. The Four Blues side is a gospel vocal quartet and as I've noted before the previous owner has near worthis wonderful side to death. My new 0035 stylus has managed to dig out just a bit more of the music. It's still a hard listen due to surface noise but I still love it.
  7. Bud Shank Mosaic CD 1 Forgotten how good this 6CD set is.
  8. I'm interested as I've yet to come across one of his albums that didn't sound good

Totally agreed - again... Likewise I agree that it's preferable for posters to check whether there are any existing threads first prior to launching a new thread. It's not that "it's all been said before" but more a matter of keeping our collective wisdom/views arranged neatly.
  10. Thanks for that fascinating link
  11. In know " Unknown known" too. It's good.
  12. Ronnie Ross----Double Image-----(Parlophone) a nice 1958 date , all the better for being mint. Mono of course.
  13. Personel for these three tracks differs, no dates on my issue (Altosupremo) Chircorennes = , Billberg, Goran Linberg (P) K Lindgren (b) Jan Carlsson drums) (Dragon) Chicarones= Billberg , Jan Allan, Rune Gustafsson, etc Altosupremo = Sweet & Lovely & Abultion both have Lars Gullin where as the the Dragon CD doesn't. Altosupremo is not a model reissue but the music is excellent.
  14. FWIW I have both the CD and LP of this date. I prefer LPs but on this occasion the CD with bonus track wins. IIRC Chuck remixed the session which leads to better separation of the instruments. Having said that the LP was very good sounding to start with. $2 seriously undervalues the music therein.
  15. Great cover on that one. I don't have this one but have found Duke's later output pretty consistent if not especially different or unusual.
  16. I'd been listening in to bits and pieces during the day and was fully expecting to hear of an Australian win. Amazing, great sporting moment.
  17. I had no idea just how complicated LRG/The Maze/ SII was to set up. Can't see anything as complicated these days being attempted. Will be spinning this again later today. Great interview. Only question missing is, when will the juggernaut next be coming to town?
  18. Jack Sheldon & his West coast friends -------Angel Wings-------(Atlas) When your friends include Art Pepper and Tony Dumas you know it's going to alright.
  19. Gus Mancuso----------Introducing Gus Mancuso---------(Vogue UK) 1956 recording for Fantasy. Mancuso on baritone horn ( trombone like sound) was unknown to me but Richie Kamuca gets plenty of space. Cal Tjader is on drums. Much meatier than some west coast sessions.
  20. Lots of 78s in rotation tonight. I'm not listing because I can't recall but around a dozen Spike Hughes UK Decca sides. I know I've mentioned this before but I love Spike Hughes. He strikes me as the first British ( Irish actually) genius of jazz. Ok, genius might be a little strong but sides like "Six bells stampede", "Harlem Symphony", "Buddy's Wednesday Outing" and " Sirroco" are very strong compositions and using Ellington as a model his arrangements swing. He had some decent players in Buddy Featherstonhaugh , Norman Payne & Phil Buchel. His sides from 1931-33 are well worth hearing if you can. Quite a number of his sides seem to be available to DL from amazon etc. Enough of that next up a couple of Manor 78s. Nice and mint but not that quiet. Dizzy Gillespie---------"Good Bait/ I can't get started"--------Manor 5000 Dizzy Gillespie ---------"Be bop/ Salted Peanuts"--------------Manor His first sides as a leader. Trummy Young seems out of place but does no harm. Four very nice swing-to-bop sides.
  21. Just got an HMV mono copy of this. It's nearly on a par with the first LP released from the the VV. I've had the multi CD set for years but as as ever it takes the LP format to allow me to focus on the material. Plus also the vinyl gave me the two studio tracks which I didn't otherwise have. Great album.
  22. What's Jamal's style like on these earliest discs ?
  23. Interesting but way beyond my budget and attention span. A worthy project but I'd wonder who'll be buying.
  24. Nice haul, you clearly know what you're getting , which is more than I do on many occasions. The Art Pepper looks like a nice find.
