  1. I recently found a used copy of a Japanese reissue of what turns out to be one of my favorite Stitt recordings--Sonny Stitt at the D.J. Lounge, on Argo. Stitt is in top form on this one, playing with what I assume is a Chicago group--John Board on tenor, Edward Buster on organ, and Joe Shelton on drums. I've never heard of John Board, but he sounds good, and he and Stitt blend well together and are both inspired. Recorded June, 1961 at McKie's Disc Jockey Show Lounge, Chicago.
  2. Granada Theater: Stanley Jordon--September 8 Larry Coryell with Victor Bailey and Lenny White--September 21.
  3. I recall there being an LP box set of the Five Spot recordings, released as The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy.
  4. Japanese import version: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008K75...ie=UTF8&s=music
  5. I ordered both the Tampa Red and the St. Louis Jimmy, along with Driftin' Slim, Baby Tate and Curtis Jones. And in addition, every one of the Living Legends series.
  6. Dear Concord: That Wes Montgomery box set must really be weighing down your earnings per share, given that such a massive box set sells rather slowly. It kind of reminds me of the Coltrane and Bill Evans box sets. You could really have a short-term positive impact on earnings (not to mention stock value) by including the Wes Montgomery box set in your current online sale at, say, 80% off of list price. Sincerely, A friend.
  7. I only have Communique on Soul Note, recorded in 1994, a duo recording. Two Monk compositions, two Mingus compositions, an Elmo Hope composition, and the rest Lacy and/or Waldron. I particularly like the two Mingus composition performances (Peggy's Blue Skylight and Smooch), and Lacy's Prayer.
  8. I finally received shipment confirmation of my order from the evening of July 12. All 40 CDs ordered were shipped.
  9. Yes, there are two kinds of car converters, an FM transmitter (I nevered cared for this type), and a cassette adapter (this is what I've used), which works okay (some adapters are defective, however, and make excessive noise while in use--I recommend Monster brand). Better of course is that some new cars now have an auxiliary jack, where you can plug the ipod directly into the car stereo.
  10. You can get used copies of Hallucination Engine (priced like new copies) on amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E1C9R...ie=UTF8&s=music Same for Ritual Beating Systems. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000000GA...ie=UTF8&s=music
  11. Wayne only plays on the two tracks you noted on Ritual Beating Systems. He plays soprano on both of those tracks. I don't have the other CD.
  12. You must have a better copy than me--the Alamac pressings I have are terrible.
  13. I have the CD, and it's terrific. I learned about it through a Gary Giddens piece in the Village Voice. The Bird part sounds alot better on this CD than on the Alamac LP. If this helps, the label is Jass Records (J-CD-16), 611 Broadway, #411, New York, 10012, 1-800-666-JASS. The producer is Dr. William Miner. Engineering was by Doug Pomeroy and Jerry Valburn. The other interesting release on this label (which I don't have) is Count Basie, Lester Young and the Stars of Birdland on Tour.
  14. The book is out of print, but I ordered one from an amazon.com seller, and there are plenty more available.
  15. Yes, the link is on the first page of the giant thread Are some OJC limited editions going OOP?
  16. Who could read a whole book written in that style? I could never make it through his liner notes, or even this last post.
  17. $30 or so for a Japanese reissue of Gene Shaw's Argo LP Carnival Sketches. And I would do the same if I could find Debut in Blues or Breakthrough on CD.
  18. Looks like six (out of nine) must-buys for me.
  19. Is this one more like Live at the Lighthouse (I quite like that one), or Grant Green Alive (which didn't appeal to me too much)?
  20. That's terrible. I had the opporunity to see him lead a group with Billy Harper and Oliver Lake at Sweet Rhythm a couple of years back, an experience which left me a fan of his trumpet playing, leadership and composing.
  21. Yes, I'm aware of that - I just thought that the only Peiffer discussion that might have taken place here would have been in this thread, so I chose to post this here. Seems the disc is only available at CDbaby? I guess I'll order it... the JiP discs are great! Thanks for the information. I had not heard of him until I found a Japanese reissue of Bernie's Tune (EmArcy)--great record. And I also have the JIP La Vie en Rose. I ordered this new one right away.
  22. It's credited to Lonnie Smith and "Gasperini." Zimbabwe is indeed "Too Damn Hot."
  23. I have a more positive reaction--maybe not overall as good as Too Damn Hot, but Trouble Man, Jungle Soul, Witch Doctor, and Zimbabwe sound mighty good to me.
  24. Herbie Nichols Trio (Blue Note, Japanese pressing)
  25. My resolve (40 CDs is enough to order at one time) weakened and I went back for the Coltrane box. But, I used a different credit card, so it should be all right.
