  1. Thanks GA- I do have several recordings of the tune, I'm just curious if anyone has heard one with what might be a verse.
  2. I'm not sure what the answer to that is. Where the hell is Mike Fitzgerald?
  3. Wow, that's like what a jazz gig pays. I've got subpoenas envy.
  4. The verse is an overlooked aspect of the jazz standard IMHO. Remember when Dick Oatts and Gary Dial did a recording featuring rarely-played verses to standard tunes? There are verses to familiar tunes like All The Things You Are, and of course the great verse that precedes Stardust. I haven't found a definitive source to list these hidden treasures, so I thought this would be a good place to start; maybe folks could list some of their favorites and maybe some of which we might not have been aware. Here's the question that motivated me to start this thread: Is anyone aware of there being a verse to the Johnny Mandel tune Emily? I haven't been able to find out. If so, can you recommend a recording I could check out? Thank you in advance.
  5. Are they still together? For some reason I thought I'd heard that they split up.
  6. Larry Klein. He went on to produce several projects for Joni Mitchell.
  7. I have a whole box of duplicates, copies of CDs that I've repurchased in RVG form, new reissues, etc. I frequently give these away to students/friends, if it's something they want or something I want them to hear. When I started out with jazz, friends gave/lent me stuff to listen to, and that meant a lot to me. I feel like I'm continuing a tradition, like it's good karma. Nothing quite like giving a young jazz fan their first copy of KOB (or whatever). If someone with whom I have a reasonable level of trust asks to borrow something, I will let them. If they keep it or lose it, that's just life. No big deal, it's just "stuff". If I ever borrow something I assume total responsibility for it- I've replaced cracked jewel cases etc. I don't borrow very much- I can barely keep up with my own purchases! That being said, some of the more valuable items don't leave the house- Mosiacs, rare items etc. I don't even like taking the Mosaics out of the house myself- the boxes show wear quickly.
  8. I like Superblue a lot. Definitely a pearl in the midst of many very commercial offerings. With Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, Jack DeJohnette, Hubert Laws, Ron Carter. Nice tunes, no B.S. The cover, well that's another matter.....
  9. I caved and ordered the Basie. I knew I would eventually, but thought I'd try and wait a bit, you know, a little self-discipline. My resistance was futile.
  10. Maybe my favorite Cannonball.
  11. Poor Uno- he must not have understood when they said "It's time to wok the dog".
  12. Happy Birthday!

  15. My guess is: a lot of wild stuff will happen, Jack won't even get a nap or a shave, he'll kick everyone's ass, kill the bad guy(s) and save the world. Just a guess, I could be wrong. They should have one season happen over the daylight-savings time change. That would be what, 23 or 25, depending. I knew from the way they showed Dennis Haysbert's name in the credits (it was "special appearance" or something like that) he was going to get killed early on. I guess that State Farm bread must be righteous. Michelle was a surprise, though. Tony's quite a resilient fellow, isn't he? After that "fire bath" he didn't look all that bad. And I hope Jack doesn't have to drag this kid around the whole time. He'll be the "new Kim", you know, needing "rescued" at every turn.
  16. Very interesting. I'm assuming your compilation includes all appearances, sideman as well as leader dates. One thing that's interesting is that, for example, Herbie's number on your list is 464, which is WAY up from the number I got from CDUniverse (125), whereas the number for Bill Evans is almost exactly the same as the CDUniverse number (240 compared to 237). Not sure why that is. Thanks for providing this info EKE! I'm sure your source is much more accurate than my quick check of CDUniverse.
  17. Lift me, won't you lift me above the old routine Make it nice, play it clean, Jazzman When the Jazzman's testifyin' A faithless man believes He can sing you into paradise Or bring you to your knees It's a gospel kind of feelin' A touch of Georgia slide A song of pure revival And a style that's sanctified Jazzman, take my blues away Make my pain the same as yours With every change you play Jazzman, oh, Jazzman When the Jazzman's signifyin' And the band is windin' low It's the late night side of morning In the darkness of his soul He can fill a room with sadness As he fills his horn with tears He can cry like a fallen angel When risin' time is near Jazzman, take my blues away Make my pain the same as yours With every change you play Oh, lift me, won't you lift me with every turnaround Play it sweetly, take me down, oh, Jazzman
