  1. I remember early on when Joe Henderson was featured. That kind of thing sure didn't last long.
  2. Ah yes, I remember the Funny Faces well- a Kool-Aid knock-off (although sugar and artificial flavoring is not a particularly tough challenge to knock off). And yes, I remember Chinese Cherry in all his ethnic stereotypical glory. As well as Goofy Grape and his dental issues. I wonder what the hell that recording sounds like?
  3. Very sorry to hear that. Thinking good thoughts for him.
  4. Good recommendation. Yeah, who'd have expected that from Tom?
  5. Well, you probably knew that Johnny was a big jazz fan (and played the drums) so I think he was probably the main instigator in booking jazz musicians. I've long wished they would put out a DVD set of the band and guests over the years. There were many great players who appeared, and often Johnny would feature just the band. Also, some of the interviews were hilarious- Buddy Rich always shook things up a bit. I really, REALLY miss that show.
  6. That's a great idea. Our very own member "ghost of miles" has an excellent jazz show and previous shows are archived, so there is a wealth of great music to sample!
  7. You should email Mosaic directly. I'm sure they would answer your question and resolve all this speculation! Edited to say that Hans' (J.A.W.) information always seems to be close to the source so I'd be inclined to assume the response you get from Mosaic will be similar (if not the same) to what he posted earlier, but IMO it's still worth a try. In my experience they've been pretty good about responding to emails.
  8. Welcome to the board, Moko! Nice idea, but probably too much material for a "complete" single set (there are at least 15 CDs in his 60s output). It would be very expensive, and I'd guess that Mosaic may not be interested in putting out such a behemoth right now. Plus, hasn't most of this material been out (even though it's going OOP)?
  9. Reminds me of....
  10. Great box and a good price! Someone should nab this one!
  11. Ditto on Rosolino. Same with Carl Fontana. With certain players ya gotta get all that you can.
  12. Lou was in town last spring and several of the students had some hang time with him. He was using the above lines and was talking smack about various players- it came off very much like sour grapes and left the students wondering "WTF?". They showed up to meet this jazz legend and left feeling a little let down, not sure how to interpret his remarks. I'm not sure why Lou feels he needs to diss these players- does he feel he has not received his "due"? I've always thought of him as one of the main Hard Bop cats, and it seems like he's received a lot of deserved recognition from his great work with Blue Note. It was disappointing to hear him being dismissive of players like Trane, and the "con-fusion" rap grew old fast. He still is playing pretty well and swings like a MF, though!
  13. I'm not sure, but I think Lon may be a fan..............
  14. I don't remember for sure, but didn't this sign-off music contain some variation of material from the HBO intro music from this era? Some of it seemed very familiar.
  15. Mad Men....it's addictive.
  16. I haven't heard that in a long time- interesting! It's been a long time since the sign-off days!
  17. You do have to check the "Add message to sent box" at the bottom in order to have a record of a sent message (it used to be automatic).
  18. Amazon MP3 ...only 3 bucks, too!
  19. Happy Birthday SS!
  20. Here's a previous thread on this topic.... EDIT: I'll be curious to see what the word is on that upcoming Ang Lee film Taking Woodstock.
  21. I don't know if this has already been linked here, but it's very cool-
  22. Nice. Those look great- it really is worth the trouble to make fresh tortillas. Great production on the video, too. I like the background music.
