  1. Nice idea! Gary Foster is definitely an artist deserving wider recognition IMO.
  2. Yeah, the inversion explanation , although I feel the (guide tone) F# of the D7 is totally necessary to complete the chromatic ii-V sequence at that point (A-7/D7 Ab-7/Db7), which is the main attraction ("hook") of the tune IMO. An interesting and fairly functional variation. although a little odd IMO. This chord inversion thing relates to the appearance of the half-diminished chord- the initial representation of the half-diminished chord seems to be the minor 6, essentially an inversion of the former. G-6 = E-7(b5) I think Night in Tunisia is an example- it originally used the G-6 in place of the E-7(b5) which essentially created a iv-V7 cadence to the D minor.
  3. In my teaching experience, Mobley tunes tend to be popular with students. They're melodically and formally interesting and often have a few harmonic curve balls thrown in while remaining accessible. I agree, there are several that should be played more.
  4. Wow, that's different! I can see how you can rationalize the GbMA7 since the usual changes (Ab-7/Db7) imply that key center (although the Gb to C root motion is pretty dramatic), but I'm not sure how you'd explain the F6 as a substitute for the A-7/D7. It probably sounded OK w/the melody so it remained. Interesting how "personal" variations on standard chord progressions pop up every now & then.
  5. Just wondering, is his name pronounced "Tril-lia" or "Trig-lia'?
  6. Lil' Debbie Lil' Wayne Lil Armstrong
  7. Imagine the person on the next flight pulling that out of the seat pocket.
  8. That I understand, even with the missing L. And yes, Jay is a MF! BTW, I'm not disagreeing with the assessment in this particular case, I'm just curious about that term, having heard it used forever.
  9. Yeah, there's another Steve Davis who plays drums. Yes, I'm familiar with his work. What Marcello said. Oops, I now see what you meant, Skid. I thought you meant you hadn't heard of him. Also, what exactly is meant by "too white"? Is there "just enough white'"? Although I've never heard "white" used in descriptive praise, so one might assume any "white" is not good. Is there "too black", too? I do think I understand what is implied, and it is a commonly used critical term. I'm just not sure how to deal with/interpret it sometimes.
  10. Yeah, there's another Steve Davis who plays drums. I got to play with her a few weeks ago (she is on the jazz faculty at the Univ. of North Florida). Very nice player as well as a very nice lady. Just curious, TM, what don't you like about the DVD? (I haven't seen it).
  11. Kelly Ripa anagram- "I all perky".
  12. That Kelly Ripa is totally scrutable.
  13. Zappa expressed thoughts similar to yours on "Make a Jazz Noise Here", although his were more succinct. David appears to be disgruntled.
  14. Wasn't Trane's quartet full of grunters? Some of Garrison's solos are accompanied by a strange, rhythmic whining. Ah yes, the infamous Gruntet.
  15. Wow, that board is in sad shape! It needs someone to go in there and clean it up. It's ironic because Horace Silver has always seemed like someone who is especially conscientious about maintaining a high level of integrity in how he's represented. Very sad- I hope they either fix it or close it down.
  16. Hi Bruce! Nice to hear from you, you've been missed here. Best wishes for your recovery!
  17. I only eat during the rests. Which means I usually have plenty of time. Regarding chicken, why do you think they call it a "bucket" mute? Edit: Also, the five second rule is always in effect.
  18. And you think this phenomenon is limited to April 1st?
  19. Well, the Bulls kept it sorta close, but it was definitely Boston's night. Celtics are the better team IMO, but watch out for the Bulls next year. Congrats to both teams for one of the best series in recent memory. Edit:...and would someone explain to my feeble mind why we pronounce it "Seltics" instead of "Keltics"?
  20. BTW, nice thread title, Paul!
  21. Seems to be fixed now. Thanks Jim! The time stamp is still messed up though.
  22. Avengers assemble!
