  1. I will not reply on this right now (others will I am sure) but just wanted to say hello to the Dinosaur! Welcome back!
  2. I don't think Mighty Quinn is part of the Jordi Pujol conglomerate. Pujol's label is Fresh Sound. The other labels emanate from Spain and are handled by the same outlets that take care of the Fresh Sound distribution. Please someone correct me if I am wrong. The Mighty Quinn reissue of Pepper Adams 'Critic's Choice' did include one addition track from the session (Four Funky People) that was not in the Fresh Sound reissue. Also that 'Critics' Choice' album was not reissued until the Mighty Quinn appearance. The organizations that handled World Pacific never bothered to reissue it As far as I am concerned I light (or at least I should!) a candle for the good Pujol every time I enter a Spanish church which is very often.
  3. That's surprisingly early! Were there others between 1935 and 1944? Or was that a lone prophetic recording that didn't have much impact at the time? MG As a member of the Jess Stacy appreciation society, I just remembered that trio date! Have not made further research on the subject but Mary Lou Williams recorded two piano/bass/drums sessions (also for Decca) in March 1936. With Booker Collins on bass and Ben Thigpen (Ed's father) on drums.
  4. 'Tous deux' means both!
  5. That's the one I have for download on that JiP page on my site (top of the page), isn't it? That's the one!
  6. I'm a big fan of both, too! Like Chuck, bought the Atlas LP when it came out. I was happy to see the CD release which added one track and four alternates. Excellent session!
  7. You're right, Niko! The Jazz in Paris catalogue I checked listed all the JinP releases until nr. 101. That Django 'Place de Bouckere' was nr. 102
  8. Jess Stacy - Israel Crosby - Gene Krupa November 15, 1935 record session for Decca.
  9. the django tracks are from brussels... Which ones? Just checked with the Jazz in Paris catalogue that says all Django tracks were recorded in Paris.
  10. Most of the music appeared on the single CDs. What was not on those is mostly secondary interest. However the books that go with them are priceless!
  11. Joe Maini 'The Small Group Recordings' (Lonehill), disc 1
  12. A few seconds of Tubby Hayes (on vibes) with Charles Mingus on bass (from the film 'All Night Long), plus Mingus backing Dave Brubeck! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYDhYCfQEzU
  13. It took the New York Times almost two weeks to write an obituary!
  14. Louis Armstrong - Sidney Bechet - Lester Young - Duke Ellington - Charlie Parker - Miles Davis - John Coltrane - Cecil Taylor - Albert Ayler - the journey continues...
  15. Used to read the Bulletin du Hot Club de France back in the '50s. Don't have much interest for back issues nowadays. And also storage space at home has run out (too many records and books)
  16. The Lord Discography lists only the five Pickwicks from this series.
  17. Marcello Melis 'Free to Dance' (Black Saint) with Lester Bowie, Enrico Rava, George Lewis, Don Pullen, Sheila Jordan, Jeanne Lee, etc...
  18. Anybody seen this yet? Hoping to watch it very soon... http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/40514/good-evening-evrybody/
  19. That LP was originally part of the cheap Europa Jazz series from Italy. The series included legitimate recordings and also several bootleg items. The series again came out later (in Italy again) as I Giganti del Jazz. The one you have was recorded at the 1966 (not 1961) Newport festival.
  20. Volkher, this is the cover of the Jazz in Paris DeLuxe edition (12 CDs):
  21. Thanks for that photo, Chas! Couple asides. The John Dennis trio session 'New Piano Expressions' was recorded on the same day (March 10, 1955) as the Fabulous Thad Jones album. The Cole Porter song 'Get Out of Town' where Dennis shines was also selecteded by Cecil Taylor for his 'Love for Sale' album for United Artists.
