  1. Previously unheard live Wes? (wondering though if the tapes have circulated or are truly new and unheard like the great release 2012 release.)
  2. I'd second what MG and Peter said, and add that I think HP has a marvelous affinity for the Songbook. I honestly can't imagine describing him as run of the mill or not especially individual. But as they say, mileage may vary. I like that I can play his Highnote releases with guests who are not jazz fans but know some standard tunes and will enjoy the 'background' music while if I want to listen I have plenty to dig too.
  3. :tup Definitely a keeper.
  4. No idea but finally a corner 'round these parts I am happy to stand in. I just recently got to thinking that once upon a time, a new CD from Houston Person, Eric Alexander, Scott Hamilton were all 'must haves' for me. Now, its only Houston. There may be a superficial similarity across his Highnote releases but there is such magisterial mastery of the form, his horn and so much soul on top of it all that I have no hesitancy to get 'yet another' Person album, and I can't say that at all about EA, and while I always consider new Hamilton releases, I don't seem to pull the trigger anymore.
  5. Yeah, I found Gospel Soul of Houston Person, must have been not long after I posted this, I want to say it was about $8 on ebay, very clean or actually sealed. I didn't keep it. Have you heard Gene Harris' Concord release, In His Hands? Does that qualify as gospel? I'm not sure how you delineate a difference but its all gospel tunes (some of the more 'pop' variety) with Brother Jack on organ and various singers. There's another gospel album that is probably even more obscure, Charles Kynard did one after he more or less dropped off the jazz world.
  6. Maybe I'm not normal but I don't make the bed and I don't need a pep talk to brush my teeth. I take the garbage out when its full, fill the dog's water dish when its empty and enter debit card transactions in the checkbook the same day they are incurred. Little things aren't a problem, but I'm a world champion at procrastinating on the big ones, like studying for the agent's exam or approaching the boss to make sure he doesn't screw me over on my bonus.
  7. Not quite as pithy as "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God" but I feel you.
  8. Well you didn't alienate me on the Plas track, but you very nearly did on the one before. You heard Gene a good number of times where he wasn't but you done very well on disc #2 otherwise.
  9. Pretty well done as you'll see when you check the answers Thom, and I have to tell you that while you got #2 partially right, its not the same track as I used originally. Couldn't find the original but I decided to sub in this one ... it is Dex and I now realize, stupid me, that I didn't check to make sure that the other tenor was actually on this track. D'Oh! I should probably put this in the Answers thread but what the hey: Track 2 is Dex, Some Other Blues, from Dexter Gordon - Ben Webster, Baden 1972 (TCB). Its Kenny Drew on piano. I originally programmed Webster for sequencing into the Chelsea Bridge recording. Too foolish to make sure one of the original "Angry Tenors" was actually on the track I substituted. The idea was Ike Quebec - Ben Webster - tune associated with Ben Webster. Damn. And FWIW, there was no Gene/Not Gene section way back when. But not to say that you can't use that as a guessing construct.
  10. I hear Kathleen Robertson, late of Buffy, gets nekkid so that's enough to make me wish I had Starz. 'Cable sex' or not.
  11. Paul said it for me, so +1
  12. I read somewhere recently that you can be on the DL and be serving a suspension, which makes no sense but that's what I read, and it was on the internet so it must be true. Anyway, I don't think suspensions have anything to do with the payroll calculation, A-Rod's money is a sunk cost in that calculation. And given the fact that the player's union would surely dispute any suspension, if MLB gets its way, I think any suspensions will carry over into 2014 just because of how long it will take to adjudicate.
  13. This is remarkable if true and I'd love to see A-Rod and Braun go down for 100 games, but I can't understand why the owner of the clinic would agree to turn over everything to MLB, essentially announcing to law enforcement that he was a dope dealer. Maybe they were already going to take him down but why admit it all now? I don't think MLB's lawsuit against him was going anywhere, either.
  14. After Thom asked for a copy of my last BFT, I offered to recreate the ones he missed, way back when. So if anyone's curiosity is piqued, shoot me a PM and I'll share the link to this blast from the past. And thanks Thom, you did a pretty nice job on this one!
  15. And goodness knows, she looks pretty darn close to perfect That's the line, right?
  16. Wonderful player and composer - I hope that POS who killed him spends the rest of his life in prison.
  17. There isn't a chance in hell that the Astros turn out to be anything but a glorified AAA team. There is a slightly better chance that the Red Sox start can be sustained but June will probably tell the tale: Home for Texas and the Angels TB and Baltimore on the road Home for Tampa Bay Four at Detroit before finishing the month with six at home against Colorado and Toronto If they can somehow run that gauntlet like they did the last 20-games-in-20-days mini marathon (13-7) then maybe they have a shot at being legit contenders the rest of the way. Whatever happens, gotta love Papi's epic homer last night, and his equally epic bat flip. I can't seem to embed it but here's a link: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2841/8931991648_f2f0f01a69_o.gif
  18. Damn it.
  19. Why are these people congratulating themselves for their Metro PCS prediction from last year? We're still paying them, and there are stores all over the damn place.
  20. On Concord, The Ed Bickert 5 with Scott Hamilton and Warren Vache.
  21. I had no idea he had suffered a stroke previously. I really hope he pulls through with no lasting effects. There were seemingly countless neo-bopper recordings I've purchased with 'Grew in the rhythm section. He was like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval.
  22. The first week in February I purchased an LP on Ebay with the express purpose of using it in the March BFT. On February 13 it was shipped, Media Mail, from NY. Amazingly, for weeks on end, the tracking information had it scanned in New Jersey, outbound. I contacted the USPS and was basically told, its only been three weeks, its Media Mail and that's the slowest service, if they run out of time in a given day, it just waits until the next day so sit tight it will get there. After another two weeks wait the seller cheerfully and promptly refunded my full payment of $13.50. Imagine my complete shock to find the LP sitting on my doorstep last night, three months and ten days after it was shipped. Then imagine my greater surprise that the box was pristine (but very wet from the rain we've had, and because the seller packaged it so well, completely safe and dry inside. So, I couldn't program Ed Bickert on my BFT but all is well, and I've settled up again with the seller. Oh, and the USPS still SUCKS!
