  1. Big Al will be by shortly to kick you in the 'nads.
  2. Giddins sounds like the old timer who long ago stopped caring and has been going through the motions ever since. Probably unfair because I know I've read things by him fairly recently that don't fit that description but still ...
  3. He wasn't a star but I'll take any excuse to mention BUBBA BROOKS.
  4. Yeah that might be actionable. (I do appreciate your listing my name first in our hypothetical firm. )
  5. Its OK when he doesn't actually close them. Gives those interested a chance to appeal on the basis of Lon's statement that a new issue like this deserves a separate thread anyway.
  6. On what basis could any lawsuit be filed? Can a bad review constitute libel? Not likely especially since you'd probably meet the requirements of "public figure" if you're a musican getting reviewed by a critic. Or did he encourage readers to not attend performances, let alone buy the CD and thereby restrain trade?
  7. Well, both of his JAM recordings are a mixed-bag for me but this one is more straightahead than Nature's Way, which had Gene on synth for half the LP. I think I transferred half of that one and all of this one for a "best of JAM" CDR. Not something I turn to very often but I wouldn't give it away either.
  8. Really should have been posted sooner.
  9. My brother's f-ing hero. Just be grateful you haven't encountered him until now, and walk away, Jim. Just ... walk away.
  10. Off topic but am I the only one who thinks Cedar looks like Wayne?
  11. Good one. That bugs me too. Doesn't bug me. I put the t in there. Many dictionaries note that the original pronouciation included a t and that while the silent t is more standard, the other is also an acceptable variant, and indeed the t is making a strong comeback. I'd say its my pet peeve ... about my wife. I've never attempted to correct her, wouldn't think of it because I know its an alternative pronunciation and not automatically wrong. Still grates though.
  12. I'm pretty sure it will be easy to find after-market in-dash CD players at your local Best Buy or stereo emporium for a long time to come.
  13. I hate women who mispronounce "You're charming and funny and cute" as "get away from me, creep!"
  14. I bought the Bross Townwsend CD (I Love Jump Jazz) because Bubba Brooks was on it. Carrie Smith turned out to be a terrific bonus. RIP.
  15. I can't believe no one has mentioned the extraordinary B.B. King reissue series Ace put out. Truly essential. Actually the whole darn label is essential. They do a great job of transferrring and annotating so many great and in some cases nearly forgotten labels (and artists).
  16. I don't recall the book as I was about five years old when it came out, GA, but I did find the NY Times' obit quite interesting. I especially liked the fact that A) its still in print and B) chapters with too much literary flair were rejected.
  17. Yesterday I was listening again to Eddie Johnson, Indian Summer - what a great record. :tup
  18. Just had to post about this one, which came out late last year. Great value - three discs, 90 tunes, about $20-25 and with a very informative booklet to boot. Disc 1 is a selection of Davis' singles, and discs 2 and 3 are a selection of the recordings of others with Davis' sax featured. Here is the Amazon product page. About time Maxwell Davis got this kind of recognition.
  19. I might invite Keith Jarrett, just to find out if he grunts while he eats, too.
  20. You guys are totally missing it: Mobley plus 3 more of Chewy's favorites Chewy himself Now that's a recipe for fascinating conversation! Not to mention, instant-party.
  21. I have to go check this Kuhn/Wisteria thread now. As for me, I can say that early in my collecting days, I bought an ECM or two, not really sure what I was getting, I think I probably liked the austere nature photo on the cover. The music - whoever it was - didn't do much for me, I know that. Today I've got one or two Jarrett CDs that I can tolerate and that's it, I believe.
  22. You forgot the aborted Stitt session for Blue Note which was issued on the Lost Sessions comp.
  23. Who knows, maybe George Benson will even be inspired to stick with the good stuff and less of the slick stuff.
