I need to remember to tell my boss about this - she told me recently that Stuck in the Middle with You is her all-time favorite song, how she has made up compilation CDs to fit different moods and that the song fits into every single one of them. Its a great song, I actually spent $15 once on a 70s compilation just to get that track (this was before downloads, natch) but jeez. Sad news especially since it sounds like alcoholism was a prime factor.

No "The".

Sad news but it sounds like he had a very rough time for several years as his illnesses progressed. I'll spin Blues at Bradley's in his memory.

Back on the road with Janiva Magness
Dan Gould replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Not only are there two dates in south Florida but the second one is right in my hometown, ten minutes from the house. It will be great to hear Jim again and also a real treat to hear decent music at Boston's, where the bookings range from weak Jimmy Buffett cover bands (statutorily mandated/sponsored by the state tourism board) to awful country bands. -

I don't think you listened long enough - its called "Double Trios" for a reason: He plays with Avery Sharpe and Louis Hayes as well as Marcus Miller and Tain. Accoustic backing and electric. My second year in grad school, which was less than a year into my fascination with jazz, I had a roommate who told me was a jazz fan but it turned out to be mostly Flim and the BBs, and this album. I didn't care for the slapping bass either but there are definitely some good tracks, and nothing to peg this as an attempt at going "commercial". Unless "Satin Doll" "Lil Darlin'" and "Rhythm-a-ning" was going to get him radio play.

Man arrested for in-flight masturbation claimed
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm surprised that nowhere in the report did the cop indicate that he inquired as to how the Tabasco sauce got on his privates to create this "terrible itch". Did he eat his breakfast in the nude? -
Horace/Serenade to a soul sis...
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Apparently Jim never had a problem comprehending Frederick Roach's self-penned liners, so yeah, why not ... -
Fortunately no one on the audition committee cleared their throat mid-audition, or they might have gotten the Full Jarrett.
-
This will be of little satisfaction to those who have already acted on their impulse to give their left nut to be able to hear Jarrett play w/o the groaning. No warranty is expressed or implied.

Sad news. I'd be very interested to read that Cadence interview.

Who is taking the week off?
Dan Gould replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No week off for me but a post-New Year's family gathering will result in no less than 4 straight less-than-full work weeks, which creates an odd, not-quite-fully-invested time in the office. -
But I'm sure no additional tracks ... so unless these fall into my lap, "great sound" isn't enough to make me shell out the bucks. YMMV.

Let me get this straight: A game the Red Sox won 9-2 was impacted by the non-decision of a third-base coach which resulted in a runner being cut down at the plate?

WTF? Why was the "Elvis Thread" locked?
Dan Gould replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Forums Discussion
I completely agree with Peter and was tempted, when Hans posted that message, that it was an example of what I have long thought is his tendency to be heavy-handed, or to step in where there is no reason to at all. I didn't post that message because I kept in mind that Hans hadn't locked the thread. Seeing that it is locked, without even an explanation, is very disappointing. -
I've helpfully highlighted every "________ to (2B, 3B)" play. Show me where "Grich to 3B" appears. It doesn't. OK. Doug DeCinces then. BFD, Dan. Fact is, Moose Stubbing stopped [fill in the blank] at 3B. He got pissed and threw his helmet while barking at Stubbing. Had [fill in the blank] scored the run would have counted. Geez. It's been what, 24 years now? Still wrong. Decinces was never stopped at 3B either. He doubled in front of Grich's home run, and that's all he did. The only play that bears a resemblance to your memory is Pettis to 3B on a double in the seventh, and that was a groundball to CF, with Wilfong somehow credited with a double for "advanced on throw".

Lennie McBrowne albums discussion
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Re-issues
I think that unless you are Andorran and take great offense to the implication of illegality/lack of ethics, it shouldn't really matter. I find it interesting that the Teddy Edwards reissues include other Gloria Smyth tracks from her Pacific Jazz release. So they have a copy of it but obviously only think of it as something to use as an add-on to reissues of better known artists. At least people get to hear it but inevitably there will be orphan tracks. -
And it seems Anaheim is running away from a fight. They're a team after Goodie's heart - don't spend to improve, set firm dates to withdraw offers, heck, deny they even made offers to some players. Now, does anyone wonder if they'll reduce ticket prices? I mean, no free agents = lower ticket prices, right?

Lennie McBrowne albums discussion
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Re-issues
I have to admit this is the kind of reissue that we should actually be grateful to the Andorrans and their ilk for producing. A group that was ignored through all of those OJC reissues series, I'm sure there are people curious about them. Gloria Smyth might be somewhat of an acquired taste but I do enjoy her Pacific Jazz album. Too bad it will probably never see the light of day. Of course I am sure these are needle drops but if you can't find it in blog-land, here's a chance to hear what this group sounded like. -
But now it's our American friends' turn! Low in Palm Beach was about 30 last night - about -1 for you guys. Plenty cold for south Florida. But at least I'm not up at my parent's house in CT, buried under 20 inches of snow, I'm guessing.

I got the latest Houston Person release on HighNote and a Cobra Records two-disc set I've had my eye on for about three years. I've heard so many Cobra recordings by the well-known like Otis Rush but I am very curious to hear the more obscure artists.

Try scrolling down a little. I've helpfully highlighted every "________ to (2B, 3B)" play. Show me where "Grich to 3B" appears. It doesn't.

Here's a link to the play-by-play for game 5. Nowhere do the words "Grich to 3B" appear, as they would for any play in which Grich was held at third. In fact, I can't find "Grich to 3B" in any of the '86 ALCS game pages. You must be mistaken because even if Grich had been held at 3B and there was a play behind him that ended the inning, "Grich to 3B" would still be part of the play-by-play.

Third. I picked this up a few years ago and found I quite enjoyed it.

He slugged only .408 that season, with 18 homers and 58 RBI. I'd say Grinch, Decinces and a young Wally Joyner had more to do with that team nearly reaching the World Series. As for "idiot managing" I have no clue what you're talking about. Sometimes the most obvious moves just don't work out. Who could predict that Gary Lucas would plunk Rich Gedman? He hadn't hit anyone in over 250 innings covering four seasons. And Donnie Moore? He pulled Mike Witt with a two out, two run lead against Boston in the 9th. Witt was on cruise control. Moore had elbow problems. No. The biggest bonehead manuver in the history of pitching screw-ups came with Urbano Lugo who gave up the lead. An injured Moore gave up the winner in extra innings after the Angels got the lead back. And don't get me started on Moose Stubbing's stop sigh on Grich. I honestly don't know where to begin. But alas, I must. Witt was pulled after he gave up a two-run homer to Don Baylor, which made the score 5-4 Angels. When your guy who was on cruise control gives up a two run homer in the ninth, you've got to go to your pen. Because if he gives up another one, everybody will be screaming, "how could you leave him in after he gave up that blast?!" Mauch can't win in that situation because, should it not work out, everybody will say you should have done what you didn't do. Who the fuck is Urbano Lugo? He threw 22 innings in 1986 and wasn't even on the ALCS roster! Moore blew the lead on Hendu's homer, and then pitched two + more innings and gave up the winning run in the 11th. As for Grich, the only time he reached 3B was when he was trotting home on his sole contribution, a 6th inning home run. Otherwise he was 1-5 on the day with two K's. You can't possibly be dreaming that Rob Wilfong was supposed to score from 1B on a single by Schofield? He ain't Enos Slaughter, and it was Dewey Evans in RF. The Angels were at home. The Red Sox come-back happened in the ninth inning. Please explain to me why, if the "Angels got the lead back," the game wasn't over. You know, home team wins when they take the lead in the ninth inning or later. The reality is that the Angels came back in the ninth but couldn't push across the winning run because Steve Crawford induced a short fly to Dewey Evans and then a soft liner back to him.
