  1. Just promise they won't show any signs of life next week in Arlington when they host the Sox!
  2. Is that Rob's music thingy? I wouldn't have thought you liked his music ... I think you would have to say he likes my music. Some of the most famous musicians were animals, yo. Really? Like who? Well, let's have a look. Cat Stevens ... The Beatles ... Charlie Bird Parker ... um, well, The Animals of course. See, I don't think any of them were actual - Oh. Thelonious Monkey.
  3. Enjoy it while you can. As far as interleauge play goes, given the Sox performance this time around, I can't complain too much.
  4. I'd say that the only drawback to this announcement is that the Bird/Diz Uptown release will now have major competition for being the most important musical discovery of the millenium. Seriously this is fabulous news, obviously money talks and it didn't take a lot of discussion to get a deal done and get this out. Very exciting to hear a soundboard recording of this group, especially since I've found the sound of the Five Spot recording to be hard to get past and focus on the music.

    Jackie Davis

Is this available? Anybody heard this? ← AMG shows it as an OJC: LADY TIME AMG has sound clips too.
  6. Thanks for posting this, Brownie!
  7. Funny, I prefer the less Trane-influenced, Messengers-Jazztet era sound ... but that will hardly keep me away from this show!
  8. Funny, Garth, but I saw this one at Borders just yesterday but decided to pass for the moment. I figured it was unlikely that anyone else would grab it; but now if someone does, I know where to go. Thanks for the heads-up, I figured it would be good but decided not to spend any money yesterday.
  9. Did you ask why, given its continued availability at less than half of that? That's the follow-up question!
  10. I remember listening to an oldies radio show countdown of novelty tunes. The one FFA refers to was in the top 5 with the usual suspects (Monster Mash, Purple People Eater) and one I missed when I was growing up:
  11. I haven't had the chance or cash flow to pick up Volume 2, but Volume 1 got a lot of play time when I grabbed it last year.
  12. Mark down your calendars now, fellow South Florida residents: April 12, 2006, its Benny Golson and the Eddie Higgins Trio! Can't say anything else on the schedule grabs me very strongly - the only well known talent would be Tierney Sutton on November 9 and the Woody Herman ghost band on January 11, but this finale to the season has got me tingling with anticipation! Definitely hope to see Evan and Marty there, and maybe David Gartner too?
  13. And besides "Jane you ignorant slut" and "Dan you pompous ass" let us not forget the moment in Airplane when Jack Kilpatrick says, "Shana ... they bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash."
  14. Yes, and we'd certainly appreciate further assistance from the Braves over the rest of the weekend, then we can root for the O's against the Yanks with a clear conscience. I always laughed at Sports Illustrated's review of Kingman's baseball skills:
  15. its had pretty positive reviews in the New York Times and elsewhere, too.
  16. Its quite scary that those lyrics are starting to ring bells in my own old head. But its got nothin' on Ray Steven's "The Streak".
  17. From today's New York Times: I found this rather amusing, so I wonder what our British friends think of the Beeb's changes? Its funny to compare this seemingly modest leap into modern technology with the way local stations in the States compete on their weather reporting prowess with Doppler 6000-this and Doppler whatever-that, and 3-D representations of radar ... never occured to me it might trigger motion sickness in viewers!

    Gladys Knight

(and because I grew up with it, I don't care about the "shlockiness" of "Midnight Train" ... heck, I even like her singing that Hallmark-Card-Set-To-Music, "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". )
  19. This was buried in a review of the JVC Jazz Festival in today's Times: Hope his treatment and recovery goes well.
  20. Interesting that Something Else is referred to as by Cannonball and Miles. I can't imagine this is how its marketed here, given the Japanese fixation on preserving the albums exactly as they were originally presented, so why would the writer add Miles as co-leader?
  21. Yeah, and BIG Papi won that round. But you guys get a shot to exact some revenge at Fenway starting Monday ...
  22. You mean the Bleeker Bob who Kramer and Newman tried to sell albums to?
  23. Just to be clear, the former is not a "Permanent Ban" as my friend coined the phrase. The latter, however, most definitely is.
  24. Well, til last night Kenny Rogers was an all-star, and pitching like it. What I've missed is who you are replacing Drese and Astacio with ... I know they weren't doing very well, but ...
