  1. Thanks, Dana, for a BFT that I have set a personal mark on: 4 tunes identified! Track 1: Track 1 here. I can just imagine how Big Al's jaw hit his lap when he heard this one. Definitely a heretofore never seen coincidence. As for the music, kind of generic soul jazz/hard bop, another Son of Sidewinder ... but I dig it. Track 2: I instantly had a feeling about this one and a quick check confirmed. Track 3 here. Track 3: Watermelon Man, but God knows who's doing it. Not my favorite rendition. Track 4: This one sounds awfully familiar, but no guesses. Track 5-7: No guesses, and you can keep #7. 8 was another familiar melody but no guesses, and 9) was right up my alley, but no guesses. 10-12 Not happening for me. Track 13 Had no doubt about this one. Track 1 here. Track 14: Harmonica-driven "Work Song"? I don't know who it is, but I was diggin' it. Track 15: Very familiar melody again but ... Track 16: The ever-popular Willow, but no idea ... Track 17: I've heard decent versions of this but that wasn't one of them. Track 18: This one was so obvious, that Mrs. Gene Harris Fanatic heard the first few notes and said, "Isn't that ...?" I had an idea that it was probably from a domestic CD issue, and maybe one that not so many people have, since it came and went in the early 90s. Track 7 here. Track 19-21 can be summed up with one phrase: WTF? So, definitely a mixed bag for me. I certainly dug the four tunes I got, and there were a few others that were OK, but there were also a lot of not-doing-anything-for-me tunes, too. But thanks, Dana, for grooving a couple of batting practice fastballs for me to smack out of the park!
  2. This may be delayed while I work on the 6 minute version for one of our members. The Diz/Bird material is only a little over 40 minutes, >>>> ok, 40m. that's still a lot less than the amount released on philology a couple of years ago. can you point me to that 10 page thread chuck? half of the people here are excited only because it's on uptown. wow, uptown. bfd. i heard the mingus uptown, it's a novelty, and not much more. you want to be a hero? release one of the harder to find 1964 mingus european concerts. but i will admit that 40min of new parker is my cup of tea, to quote the english. "Excited because its on Uptown"??? What the fuck is that? Who the fuck has said that?? People are excited because, as described by Jim in the first post of this thread, this is a never-before heard performance that is, if those who have heard it are to be believed, amazing. Can you say the same thing about the Philology releases? And last but not least, before criticizing "ten page threads" about something you think is pedestrian, you might try bearing in mind that this is material that we've had advance word on for quite some time, so the discussion, anticipation, requests for updates, etc., might produce an especially long thread due almost entirely to the wait we've had to endure.
  3. That's a very good record that I have on LP only. Has it ever been issued on CD? I have it as a British two-fer CD reissue, but it came out in the OJC series: Workin' Out
  4. Richard Nixon and Leonid Breshnev's work in this area is unparalleled.
  5. If I recall correctly, Willard Jenkins writes for Jazz Times. I seem to remember him pissing me off in that infamous "over-rated/under-rated" issue when he declared that Benny Carter was too "Republican" or something like that. I also remember him on BET on Jazz, involved in some sort of Star Search/American Idol type show. I think it was three un-signed acts per show, performing and being critiqued by a panel.
  6. Oh, and another thing I discovered: It helps to go through the old pages to clear out things that were acquired. I seem to do that right after the New Year when I realize how many things are listed that I don't have to look for. Another thing I keep in that music folder is printouts of ebay items that I missed out on, usually old records that I may want to find through other sources.
  7. I often print out listings from Alan's Jazzamatazz pages to keep things that catch my eye in mind, and I keep a file folder in my briefcase with all the loose pieces of paper, along with important things like home addresses of people I trade with. I haven't been doing a lot of buying lately at all, but the pages were very helpful when my wife asked for things I'd like for my birthday/our Aniversary in September, I was able to make a lengthy list of things she could look for/save for Christmas shopping. In the end, I think I got all but two of the discs I asked for. I never bring the whole folder with me to a brick and mortar, but I will jot down certain titles I'd like to find and bring that with me.
  8. The more I think about it, given the fact that there is such a variation in how much discographical details people give, I think its really up to an individual to do some searching themselves. Asking anyone, even the anally inclined, to put it all togethr, seems like a lot of work for minimal return. I think the best thing would be Jim's idea: Copy and paste the answer posts for each BFT, in order. If the info is there, great. If its lacking, well, as Jim says, you can go and ask the guy for more info, or try to search it out yourself.
  9. Except that Tony was #1 and I was #2 ... Honestly, it seems to me that even a single person could do this into the single thread Jim is talking about, and have it done in 30 minutes or fewer.
  10. Borders tends to stock a lot of Grant Green, or has in the relatively recent past. So if you like your brick and mortar shop, I'd try there first.
  11. Just guessing, but I think in the psychiatric biz, one has an illness or a "condition" and it is either highly debilitating or moderately debilitating or barely debilitating. But the condition-the illness-the deviation from the norm, the well-adjusted-is always there.
  12. I heard him on the "Jazz" series and on these programs. Definitely seems like a nice guy, but he contributed absolutely nothing to either series. What is he a critic of? Certainly not deceptive "documentaries." I know he's been involved in Miles Davis Conferences at Washington University (my Grad School alma mater).
  13. it's just really big Its more than just really big ... it requires major alterations both to airport gates, and due to its weight, to runways, too (I'm pretty sure). Its going to be very interesting how the market shakes out. Personally, I think Boeing is going to be proven right that a smaller jet with greater fuel efficiency is going to prove more popular. Moving huge groups of people from point A to B-isn't that the the spoke-hub theory? How economic will this plane be if its not flying at capacity or near capacity? A lot of credit is due to Airbus for its successes, but it may have miscalculated on this one.
  14. I'll be interested to learn more about the Jess Willard title defense in Havana. My understanding has been that Johnson wanted to see his dying mother and therefore agreed to throw the fight to Willard so he could return to the US without the title, where he'd be less threatening to the prevailing order of the day. The evidence that the fight was thrown was pretty compelling to me: After being hit by a right cross, Johnson went down, but as he was counted out, he raised his arm to block the brutal Havana sun from his eyes, suggesting that he was in fact in full charge of his faculties and not knocked senseless. My father has a boxing book I used to look through, I guess it was a biography of Johnson. What I remember most is, in the photo section, there's a shot of a scowling Johnson, in his 50s or 60s, about to fight a very young opponent, late teens or early 20s. The caption said that Johnson won the decision!
  15. Since the guy used "Buy it Now" that isn't really a measure of current value. You know the psychology-get it while you can before it gets bid up. I'd be curious if there have been any recently completed auctions to give a better view of the value.
  16. So when do we start the discussion? I got four nailed already without working up a sweat! B-)
  17. For a single session, I could do the transfer, Marty.
  18. Yeah, I forgot to ask if I deserved credit for inspiring that bit of audio tomfoolery. Just think if anyone had real audio editing capability-with multiple track capability, you could take Armstrong's original "wonderful World" and add some Gee-Whiz noodling on top, really confuse people!
  19. Yes, so unless you drove straight through and concentrated your jazz dial search to the evenings and overnights, I'd say its a good chance you'd miss some decent jazz programming. And for anyone attempting this in the future, remember that since jazz tends to get programmed on public stations and college radio, you can restrict yourself to the low end of the FM dial, and avoid that span that is apparently 50% country.
  20. As far as I'm concerned, if Fathead didn't think it was "too soon" then there ain't nothin' "less than tasteless" about it.
  21. Well I didn't get it yet and I'm only 7 miles away from you. Then again, you got the original from Serbia more than a week before I got it.
  22. Am I the first guy in the States to get it? Just shuffled through the tunes, and I can't wait for the discussion to start, as I know I am going to set a personal mark for tracks identified! B-)
  23. To be clear, I am not saying that stripping is never a last resort to homelessness. But to imply that every, or even a majority, of strippers are doing it due to extreme poverty is ridiculous. So, Alex, care to give us the Marxist interpretation of women who are adult film performers? I'm sure the marxist interpretion is fascinating. But you have to admit, its a unique industry, considering that women get paid thousands of dollars per week (or scene) but the poor men only get a few hundred dollars per money shot. Talk about being exploited! Those "stunt cocks" have to perform through multiple camera set-ups, with dozens of people watching, hot lights all around, and maintain their, shall we say, self-control, all for a few hundred dollars.
  24. That's really weak and a crock of shit, Alexander. And really, I had no idea that Marx and Engels gave marxist interpretation of erotic dance. But the most ridiculous statement you've made is this: This is such a crock its a joke. There are so many middle class women stripping ... do you think anyone believes its a "last resort before homelessness?" Give me a f-ing break.
  25. Thanks for the update. The Eric Alexander looks like a winner, and I have the first Philadelphians disc and its quite nice; a Volume 2 is a welcome sight!
