UP, to remind people to tune in at 9 pm TONIGHT for Sascha Feinstein's Jazz Standards, originating from WVIA and covering the career of Percy France. I recently became aware that three tunes on the playlist originate from Allen Lowe's archives and are heard by the general public for the very first time. https://www.wvia.org/radio/

Penny looks like she is about to burst (sorry no photo handy) so ... horse baby photos in the next 2-3 weeks. Sue has a buyer lined up already but specifically for an all-white (or few-spot) colt, so you know what I am hoping for.

Keep her happy then!

I encountered Ben Sidran first on VH1, back when they kinda/sorta programmed some jazz-dedicated programs(?). Perhaps it was BET instead. He struck me as a pre-Kramer hipster doofus and I am sure it effected my interest in the rest of his oeuvre.

So what say you?

Already being host of the digital files it makes perfect sense ... and congrats on retirement. (And I had no idea that had happened. I recall you mentioned being too busy with work but retirement - you seem way too young but if you have the years in, good for you.)

That's not Wayne with Lee and Art?

This is completely beyond my comprehension.

Brian Wilson Contemporaneous Covers in the 1960s
Dan Gould replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
No one should ever, and I mean, freaking ever record "God Only Knows". The original recording is sheer perfection, and as shown by the steakhouse video above, Carl Wilson is the first, last and only person to do it justice. -
This is a bit of shock and 71 is certainly too young. My favorite Hurt movies/performances are Body Heat and especially The Big Chill. I know the latter gets mixed reviews but it came out as I was developing strong bonds with a group of people at college, and so the themes were very real to me at the time. I don't know how many times I've repeated "I could have, I chose not to. I'm not hung up on this completion thing."

Look for Businessman's Bounce - I used "Straighten Up and Fly Right" on January's BFT.

Thanks for reminding me to check on that element of the deal that the PA refused to negotiate in good faith on - the bonus pool for pre-arb players. As far as I can tell, demands (in millions) went like this: $115 $110 $120 final number $50 mil. Turns out it never was that important but you wouldn't know it by how the PA behaved, until the very end.

https://billeasley.bandcamp.com/ A bit short, I guess, for the CD era but the tracks sound awfully good - will be purchasing soon. Should probably purchase today if its Bandcamp Friday?

Very sad to hear this news, Bill was a nice guy. I also recall his last post about Covid but also believe I recall a mention here or on Facebook about Multiple Myeloma and if that were true its easy to imagine that a Covid infection could be much more dangerous. RIP.

So another marathon session and another meeting later today. Would love it if MLB responds to whatever PA counter-proposes by going backward on 2 or 3 of the things that they conceded ground on before. Taste of their own damn medicine. Edit to add: Too bad they won't. But they should.

Pulled out Loose Walk, Heartaches, Satin Doll for this morning's listening.

This conversation led me to dig out some 1980s private recordings by Dex ... discovered that I have the one Georghe references. It's hardly great yet also weirdly interesting. What I listened to didn't fall apart completely, almost a high-wire act waiting to see what would happen. I also listened to a performance from March 1982, ironically matching Dex and Johnny Griffin, two folks who would drink mortal men far under the table, if stories of consumption are to be believed. They both sound terrific.

Thank you, Agustín. Were you aware that in the CD era quite a number of other Montmartre shows were issued? 7 or so between 2003-2004 including a lone additional one in 2012, per Discogs. Kenny Drew is on most of them and they were no-brainers to pick up, for me.
-
Yes but possibly not earliest ... discogs and allmusic aren't that helpful in terms of timing of releases, Discogs is skipping the Montmartre (Dex in Radioland) LPs and allmusic puts it among the BN recordings, chronologically. I wonder when those Dex recordings were actually released.
-
I really have to revisit and I am not even 100% certain I still have it. There was a time I purchased any Steeplechase Dex I saw, and I know I liked the original two LPs ... then I think I went thru a period where I realized there had been a period where Jackie's style absorbed "new thing" influences which I was never thrilled with. I think at some point I realized Dex with Kenny Drew and no other horn offered a more consistently pleasurable listening experience. Like I said I need to revisit and not sure I can with any ease.

Very happy to announce that writer/poet/Professor Sascha Feinstein is dedicating an hour on his Jazz Standards radio program on WVIA - Williamsport to Percy France. I "met" Sascha online via one of my many Percy France google searches. His first memoir, Black Pearls, was excerpted somewhere online, the excerpt being about his many teen-aged visits to The West End, often hearing Percy France, and even getting a chance to play a tune with Percy and Sammy Price. Sascha graciously provided a great remembrance for the site: https://www.percyfrance.info/sascha-feinstein (And talk about a small world, he and our own GoM, David Brent Johnson, are friends since the 1990s when both were in Indianapolis.) Now his radio show will bring Percy France further out of the shadows, streaming on March 26 at 9 pm and again September 17. https://www.wvia.org/radio/
