  1. Here's one my father, who worked in the business side of show business including stints with MGM and Hanna Barbera, loved to tell. Cecil B. Demille is remembered for his incredible epic films with huge casts of extras and many assistant directors to catch all the action simultaneously. He would communicate with them via walkie talkie. So one day on the set, very complicated scene is finally set up and Demille announces that it's time to roll film. "Ready when you are, C.B.!" come the replies from his assistant directors. He calls action, and thousands of people are moving/fighting etc. He calls "cut" and asks his first assistant if he got that. "Well C.B., the camera wasn't centered the way you wanted it. I'm not sure if we got it." And he asks the second director, and he reports trouble with the camera mount. Now he's worried about a completely lost take, but he still has one more assistant he hasn't heard from. "Ready when you are, C.B.!"
  2. These two discs worth of Blakey/Wayne/Lee/Bobby in Japan have appeared "elsewhere"? I'd like to know where that was because it's being promoted as never-before-released, and I know its not the same as the "day in Japan" releases back in the 90s. I do have somewhere a multi-generation copy of a video of them in Japan but that was with a Japanese big band ...
  3. I don't think discussing the logic of an SC is decision is of necessity "political". I'll cop to that referencing the left is a political statement and I will edit it out.
  4. Well we're not supposed to get into politics but the Opinions are pretty compelling in favor of the majority. They certainly are to me. Precedent and text of the OSHA statute supports the necessity of legislative action to approve or establish such a mandate. And Omicron, which makes the vaccinated vectors of disease, too, doesn't exactly help Biden's case. The court isn't prohibiting private companies, large and small, from instituting vaccine mandates, let's recall. It is saying that the constitution, the legislative text, and their precedents establish that Federal authority is lacking. <deleted for overt political comment> And anyway I have suspected all along that this is what Biden knew was coming, especially in light of the Supremes decision on the eviction moratorium, and what this was about was not enforcing a mandate on all these businesses by a beauracracy that can hardly function on its actual mandate, but as a way to give cover to large corporations with tens of thousands of employees to announce and start enforcing a mandate of their own. And I would argue that its had its intended effect - most corporations were claiming 90-95% compliance already. Feel free to tell me how wrong I am.

    MICHAEL BRECKER

And per Phil's autobiography, the producer picked notes from different takes to make up that solo. Phil Woods was Kenny G before Kenny G was.
  6. Hopefully a couple more people jump in but in the interests of trying to run the table to the greatest extent possible (and perhaps at least try to be competitive with my friend Mr. Felser as far as # of discussion posts go ) I intend to go whole hog with hints on or around January 20. Something I've never really done before, save for the odd one or two tracks.
  7. I do recall that ... to me Gene on Concord (as leader) is much more 'Gene with rhythm (including guitar)' i.e. what Gheorge said earlier - big pianist, less prominent bass/drums. Whereas Gene with Ray Brown & Jeff Hamilton or Gene with Andy & Bill are more him as part of a great band. I dig Gene in all contexts (well except the contexts used for his final BNs, and about 1/2 of his JAM recordings) but enjoy most the trios myself.
  8. Thank you but as it turned out that LP was in remarkably better shape than "G+" and my transfer off my cheap rig, folded down to mono and with minimal pop/click removal, turned out to be excellent. Something I had looked for over 20 years for ... finally heard.
  9. From your list Peter I would think that you are more interested in boppish to post-bop trios, but that really leaves me wondering what Ray Bryant has that Gene doesn't. But as you say to each their own.
  10. Got Live in Paris for Christmas and while I enjoy all of his HighNote recordings, this one gets an extra star or three, and I think its definitely due to being a live concert. (And when I say extra star or three, none of his HighNotes get less than 4 stars, so the additional stars are breaking the grading system.
  11. I am glad you found something you liked at an acceptable price, Eric.
  12. Indeed. And while albums may sound alike, I think that's more a testament to their consistency and simpatico feel among the members, honed by years on the road. For me The Three Sounds function as high-level jazz as well as "pleasant" background jazz. Like Houston Person's many HighNote CDs, this is legit jazz that can be played at a gathering with non-jazz fans.
  13. And more Percy w. his original tenor inspiration, Budd Johnson:
  14. I'd second Shrdlu's recommendation, especially given Peter's stated enjoyment of the Blue Hour disc. There are several tracks on this that are similarly down-tempo. Aside from that one, Feelin Good and Here We Come also get strong thumbs up here. Note: The domestic CD of Black Orchid is strong and also good value - something like six additional tracks added. Note: You might want to edit your Topic to "Best" not "Beat".
  15. Thanks for joining in, glad you liked at least some of the tunes!
  16. See my original post. Owner is dead. I doubt this is consignment they made a deal with the heir(s). I have to say I am shocked at the price on what Kevin has shared and while I can understand an "autograph" premium there ought to be a noticeable "non-removable sticker" debit.
  17. How are fat girls and mopeds alike? They're both fun to ride until your friends find out.
  18. What should you do if your partner starts smoking in bed? Slow down, and use more lube.
  19. So I was at Mom's apartment in her new assisted living facility over the weekend, and we stumbled across a rebroadcast of a Cub-Brewer tilt from 2019. Since her favorite Cubbies were still on the team we decided to watch the game ... and I am absolutely staggered to see the "Key Moves" scroll and then confirm things now that I am back. Apparently in the run up to the owner lock out the Sox were busy and I missed it, and the damage was hardly described in the : It just said the Sox had acquired Jackie Bradley Jr. Turns out it was Hunter Renfroe to the Brewers for Jackie Bradley Jr and two prospects who have done nothing above Low A ball. Jesus Christ, one of the best hitters they had, with an incredible arm in the outfield, for a guy they gladly waived goodbye to last year, and hit .160 in 134 games for the Brewers. When I heard JBJ, I thought that maybe they were moving Kike Hernandez to 2B to improve the infield defense and thought, "OK". But now I see this and all I can do is to quote Bulldog Bob Briscoe: "This SUCKS! This is total BS!!" Oh, and a reunion with Rich Hill. Maybe league average starter until he gets hurt. BFD.
  20. So your app only identified two items (plus, I assume, the Gene Harris Concord recording)? Thanks for keeping the actual cut numbers out of it though it should really not be hard to figure out which two were ID'd. Thanks for joining in Ken, I do appreciate it even though you didn't like that many tracks. (And I'll take the "under" on your estimation of number of tracks you own. Could be as few as 2.)
  21. Glad you enjoyed the compilation Randy. Unfortunately you got the titles right but none of the guesses landed.
  22. I concentrate on Ike and Grant, never even thought of discarding Dodo's BN.
  23. How are cyclones and marriage alike? They both start with a lot of blowing and sucking, and in the end you lose your house.
