  1. I too found it to be an enjoyable novel, and it, along with the rest of George Orwell's works, is available online for free: http://www.george-orwell.org/Keep_the_Aspidistra_Flying/index.html http://www.george-orwell.org/
  2. Precisely, but my take on the optics is very different. I hope we can agree to disagree. At any rate, I've now read that she'd changed into tennies by the time she got to Texas. Meanwhile, with Fenton Robinson on guitar,
  3. Re the photo in the previous post: It's gotta be Photoshopped, only it's not! At least Marie Antoinette didn't wear cfm heels* to leave the palace during a rainfall and go tour a calamitously flooded region. *Please Google "cfm heels" if you don't know what they are.
  4. Once again, Now's the Time! A New York Times op-ed was published today for the occasion — not a music column, mind you, but an op-ed. At the risk of sounding like a cutesy greeting card, Happy Bird Day.
  5. Apparently Valerie's son later posted these links: http://jazzfoundation.org/ https://www.newportfestivals.org/our-mission/ http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/jazz-education http://jazzbakery.org/ https://www.grammy.com/musicares R.I.P., Valerie Isabel Paul Bishop

  9. My insomnia (too) takes the form of waking up far too soon. If any insomnia sufferers here are smokers, as I am: It kills me to admit it, but when I don't smoke for the last couple of hours before bedtime (generally because I've run out of cigarettes), I sleep for 8 or 10 hours. I've read only the most recent page of this thread, so forgive any duplication, but over-the-counter diphenhydramine is commonly taken for insomnia and is pretty benign. I've tried taking two 25mg capsules of it half an hour before bedtime, and . . . it didn't keep me from waking up too soon, but YMMV. (Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in Benadryl in the United States, but Benadryl elsewhere apparently has different active ingredients. It's also the active ingredient in Nytol, Sominex, et al. in the United States, but not necessarily elsewhere.)

  15. What I see online, as of this post, is that only a headline (with a photo) appears under Obits, and that links to the rest of an article by Ben Ratliff in Music: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/12/arts/music/keith-emerson-70s-rock-showman-with-a-taste-for-spectacle-dies-at-71.html At the end of the article: "A version of this article appears in print on March 12, 2016, on page B7 of the New York edition" with the same headline. From Google, I see that at some point the NYT has also run a straight AP obit headed Arts: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/03/12/arts/ap-us-obit-keith-emerson.html
