Mosaic's Black and White label box set
Dub Modal replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Fresh Sound Spencer is on Apple too. Crazy that FS is the one that gets this music on an American streaming platform. Not sure that’s legal but interested parties can’t afford to sue these companies anyway. -
Should Saxophonists Do A "Sonny Rollins"?
Dub Modal replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I’m just glad opinions about art don’t have the power of law. -
He played acoustic bass on Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages. Tremendous player. Far too young. RIP.

Never saw Atlanta actually. May have to check that out. I started watching Severance. It's weird. One of the weirdest shows I've watched in a while and very dark literally and figuratively. While it can be compelling at times I wouldn't say it's enjoyable. This playlist on the other hand, is a great mix. They included Take 4 of On the Corner from the complete OTC set, some Buddy Terry and Joe Henderson among others.

Live it up!

There’s a market for these things it seems. I’m not in it, but they’re making money - otherwise this stuff wouldn’t get produced.

I stumbled across this playlist in Apple Music and stopped when I saw Joe McPhee kicked it off. I haven't seen any episodes (wiki link for the show here), and don't really know what it's about but so far I'm loving this playlist: Joe McPhee - Shakey Jake Yes I Can, No You Can't - Lee Morgan Hub-Tones - Kamasi Washington Volunteered Slavery - Roland Kirk Summun, Bukmun, Umyun - Pharoah Sanders ...and further songs from Jimmy Smith, Dorothy Ashby, Jamie Branch, Albert Ayler, et. al.

Classic song and album.

I remember those. They stopped doing them here a few years ago. Now all donations are handled through a 3rd party.

I recently had good success offloading a small lot of LPs at a record show that came through. I wasn’t trying to make a lot of money on these but it was a better experience than at local shops. Our libraries don’t take stuff like this anymore, old books neither.

Nice! Hope our praise of this in the Nathan Davis thread didn't steer you wrong.

Is it a Gil Evans band?

On 2nd listen I'm digging track 11 way more. It actually is my favorite of the bunch. There's a 70s Miles influence that I picked up on and it's got some interesting movements. It's a live track obviously but is the guitar player the leader/composer? That dip he, and maybe the bassist too, repeat almost throughout got kind of funny, esp the last run of it. The last 4:24 minutes or so there's a really interesting shift and calls to mind another style of Miles. Are there any Miles Davis connections? Then that spooky percussion finish- just wild.

I'm glad yall love 'em. Ties make no sense to me at all as I don't understand the necessity of wearing knotted fabric around my neck. I wear them only when required. I'm just not big on accessories I guess. Anyway, I've got several of McLean's Prestige albums from the 50s and I really do enjoy them.

I don't think anyone was making an issue of Brooks' sexuality but rather questioning whether that may have had something to do with what appears to be mistreatment by BN's owners at the time and/or others. The initial question was more indicting of Lion & Wolff, not Brooks.

Less appealing unless you've had one. I haven't read his autobio but sounds like if/when I do I'm going to need some snacks. -

I can't hang out around hotel pools while in Peru, but I dig Peruvian seafood especially ceviche. Pisco sours are good too -
1 - Love it. Heebie Jeebies baby! During the scatting, it's just him singing with the banjo being plucked and it's lovely. At least I think it's a banjo and not a guitar...."I just gotta have the Heebies!" 2 - Someone is making that clarinet sing. This song has to go well with one of those sweltering NO summer nights. 3 - Another jam that's just a pleasure to listen to. I'm not familiar enough with this style to make a guess. I really like how these compositions were approached, with solos accompanied by just one other instrument. Seems to build tension that gets released when more of the ensemble joins in. 4 - Interesting flute solo mixed in there, which to me was unexpected. 5 - Dig that bass. This is almost proto-funk in a way. 6 - Solo sax was not expected either. No guesses 7 - This one's got layers. Basie or Ellington? Song is a classic but the title is escaping me...This will be guessed 100% by others immediately I'm sure. 8 - Ode to Coleman Hawkins. No idea who this is as I've never heard the song. 9 - Lots of control from the sax player. Simmering creeper of a song. I don't think that's Hutch on the vibes but I could be wrong. That violin kind of snuck up on me at the end. 10 - Sounds like something maybe Randy Weston would compose. Hard to pick out any particular style from the horn players, at least for me. Interesting song. The end portion that filters down to the percussion is nice. 11 - I'll have to revisit this one. Not hitting for me at the moment and I don't want to slag it. Start-stop-accelerate into frantic isn't in my Friday AM bag. 12 - Like the piano right off. The whole rhythm section has it together actually. Would love to know who's involved here as I can't name it. I got no idea on the theme. Enjoyable session though.

Great selection. Hate that I dissed that Mal track a bit, not to mention I have that album too. Oh well... The alternate bassist you had indeed nailed it.

I dig it.
