  1. Classic song and album.
  2. I remember those. They stopped doing them here a few years ago. Now all donations are handled through a 3rd party.
  3. I recently had good success offloading a small lot of LPs at a record show that came through. I wasn’t trying to make a lot of money on these but it was a better experience than at local shops. Our libraries don’t take stuff like this anymore, old books neither.
  4. Nice! Hope our praise of this in the Nathan Davis thread didn't steer you wrong.
  5. Is it a Gil Evans band?
  6. On 2nd listen I'm digging track 11 way more. It actually is my favorite of the bunch. There's a 70s Miles influence that I picked up on and it's got some interesting movements. It's a live track obviously but is the guitar player the leader/composer? That dip he, and maybe the bassist too, repeat almost throughout got kind of funny, esp the last run of it. The last 4:24 minutes or so there's a really interesting shift and calls to mind another style of Miles. Are there any Miles Davis connections? Then that spooky percussion finish- just wild.
  7. I'm glad yall love 'em. Ties make no sense to me at all as I don't understand the necessity of wearing knotted fabric around my neck. I wear them only when required. I'm just not big on accessories I guess. Anyway, I've got several of McLean's Prestige albums from the 50s and I really do enjoy them.

    Tina Brooks

I don't think anyone was making an issue of Brooks' sexuality but rather questioning whether that may have had something to do with what appears to be mistreatment by BN's owners at the time and/or others. The initial question was more indicting of Lion & Wolff, not Brooks.
  9. Yeah, don’t hesitate on Peace Treaty
  10. Take speed reading to a whole new level
  11. Less appealing unless you've had one. I haven't read his autobio but sounds like if/when I do I'm going to need some snacks.
  12. I can't hang out around hotel pools while in Peru, but I dig Peruvian seafood especially ceviche. Pisco sours are good too
  13. 1 - Love it. Heebie Jeebies baby! During the scatting, it's just him singing with the banjo being plucked and it's lovely. At least I think it's a banjo and not a guitar...."I just gotta have the Heebies!" 2 - Someone is making that clarinet sing. This song has to go well with one of those sweltering NO summer nights. 3 - Another jam that's just a pleasure to listen to. I'm not familiar enough with this style to make a guess. I really like how these compositions were approached, with solos accompanied by just one other instrument. Seems to build tension that gets released when more of the ensemble joins in. 4 - Interesting flute solo mixed in there, which to me was unexpected. 5 - Dig that bass. This is almost proto-funk in a way. 6 - Solo sax was not expected either. No guesses 7 - This one's got layers. Basie or Ellington? Song is a classic but the title is escaping me...This will be guessed 100% by others immediately I'm sure. 8 - Ode to Coleman Hawkins. No idea who this is as I've never heard the song. 9 - Lots of control from the sax player. Simmering creeper of a song. I don't think that's Hutch on the vibes but I could be wrong. That violin kind of snuck up on me at the end. 10 - Sounds like something maybe Randy Weston would compose. Hard to pick out any particular style from the horn players, at least for me. Interesting song. The end portion that filters down to the percussion is nice. 11 - I'll have to revisit this one. Not hitting for me at the moment and I don't want to slag it. Start-stop-accelerate into frantic isn't in my Friday AM bag. 12 - Like the piano right off. The whole rhythm section has it together actually. Would love to know who's involved here as I can't name it. I got no idea on the theme. Enjoyable session though.
  14. Great selection. Hate that I dissed that Mal track a bit, not to mention I have that album too. Oh well... The alternate bassist you had indeed nailed it.
  15. I dig it.
  16. Thing is these establishments can’t play their own recordings from home right? They have to lease rights via BMG or whomever or they get sued. I’ve always thought a good way around that would be to have a live dj spinning no more than 1 or 1.5 minutes of a song. Imagine that at a Waffle House.
  17. Trying to get out of a Bill Evans funk with this one. Nice stuff, and I find myself listening more intently to what Manne is doing for some reason...then Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love! Some good tunes, with Redbone being an instant classic...but there's not much deviation from a formula here and the sameness can wear thin after a while. On to Total classic from '98. George Clinton's legacy is substantial and probably eternal.
  18. I wouldn't worry about it man, and don't be so hard on your ears. Most reviewers there and elsewhere wouldn't be able to pick out pressing/media/artist or even song in a blind test. You really don't have to spend thousands of dollars to enjoy a piece of media that cost less than $100 (or even less than $25).
  19. Actually - I do have some CDs and an LP from them: These Bunny Wailer tracks were really hard to come by before Dub Store reissued them. And then this absolute classic: The rest of their reissue catalog is amazing. The Jammy collections, obscure rock steady sides and variety of singles is impressive. Of note, the quality of their physical media is very dependable.
  20. Yes, very familiar but due to prices I’ve only done downloads or streams. Orthodox Dub is excellent and was a priority for me when they reissued it.
  21. Ah, I've got Callier's What Color is Love and didn't realize Stepney was on that.
  22. Never heard of him that I know of but dig the track
  23. Oh, not saying it was technically double tracked, but with her singing along with Gene it gave the illusion of being double tracked. Which I guess is what all singing duos would sound like but their voices meshed really well.
  24. The effect of her vocals comes across as double tracking, at least the way I'm hearing it. Pretty cool idea to do that. I'd say that's reminiscent of Jamaican vocal duo stylings. That first song here sounds more Latin influenced than Jamaican at least to me.
  25. Kiefer's Bridges EP Per discogs this was only issued as a cassette. Listening via AM stream.
