  1. This morning's listen: Nice variation in styles and great playing all around.
  2. I've never heard that song before
  3. A little before my time
  4. Pop music imagery is pretty weird and mostly depressing to look at. Clearly I'm not the demo for that stable.
  5. Another guess for the 5 & 9 tenor: Dave Liebman?
  6. He did good design work.
  7. AA should do one for sure. Also, I've done some further listening and have to say track 5 is a real standout for me. Sax and piano are pure class. Really looking forward to the ID there. You mentioned that Dmitri was close with his guess of Lovano and that it's an American contemporary player. Is it Sonny Fortune?
  8. Excellent selections!
  9. Expecting a full report!
  10. Great album and I love the cover photo. This is one that I'd love to frame.
  11. Ha, NP! Hope the Sultans tunes are good
  12. Wow. Thanks for this link. They've got a ton of Cumbia which is the bomb. Listening to this comp now: https://vampisoul.bandcamp.com/album/the-afrosound-of-colombia-vol-1 I noticed they had some of these artists' albums separately on their bandcamp listing as well. The only thing I know is to do a random click here and there. Probably going to dig what's there more times than not. Second track from this comp (Cumbia De Luna): https://vampisoul.bandcamp.com/album/the-afrosound-of-colombia-vol-2 The lope of this rhythm is infectious.
  13. I didn't play for me either. However, I followed a trail of links and found this one that works: https://www.wbgo.org/2021-04-23/phil-schaaps-50-year-career-the-raconteur-raised-on-jazz
  14. Beastie Boys and Pink Floyd are Capitol artists I have in my collection. Also have some from EMI which was a sub of Capitol. For that label I have D'Angelo, Parliament, Peter Tosh and RHCP.
  15. Still feeling giddy after the all-nighter?
  16. I listened to both Legacy and In My Time today and enjoyed both. I can't really give a definitive answer there as - to me anyway - they're both great big band albums. I also like State Street Sweet, which is on a different label and from the mid-90s. I don't think you can go wrong but others may have differing opinions.
  17. The Pac Jazz one's get the recs but his later work stands out to me, especially those on Mack Avenue which have impressive line ups that include Renee Rosnes, Kamasi Washington, Dick Oatts, Gary Smulyan, Jeremy Pelt, Lewis Nash, et al. And I make that rec while having that Mosaic Pac Jazz set - great tunes but also of their time. His more contemporary albums perhaps don't get the credit they should. Anyway, I've neglected his 80s albums, so I'll try those as well.
  18. Michel Portal on tracks 1 and/or 7?
  19. So I'm thinking the Osby track 3 is the last track on this album. And I'm guessing the theme is albums recorded and/or released in Germany?

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/black-sabbath-jazz-swing-influence-bill-ward-948231/ This link talks mainly about Ward's jazz influences but it's a good read overall. And yeah, I'm with you on checking out Jazz Sabbath lol.

I've read Ozzy telling a story that when he went into rehearsals with the band prior to the recording of Never Say Die (I think that's the one), they guys were jamming out playing jazz. Ozzy was pissed, saying he came to rock, not fool around with jazz. Other interviews I've read with Ward and maybe the other guys talk about them loving some jazz of the day. I agree, one doesn't necessarily hear much influence, but apparently the love for it was there.

Man, that's also apropos because the Sabbath guys were all jazz fans. Well, Ozzy wasn't I don't think but Geezer, Bill and Tommy most certainly were.
  23. Sorry, I meant RVG CD reissue as I thought that's what @Gheorghe was talking about. My bad if not.
