Interesting topic! My current obsessions are Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" and Miles Davis' "Miles Smiles". Incredible music that hit me hard the first time, and keeps getting better with repeated listenings. I'm *carefully* wading into the Plugged Nickel set; that may be next on the heavy rotation list. And a daily dose of Mingus never hurts either...

Blue Mitchell. Can't decide what's next: Mobley or Tristano/Konitz/Marsh. -
Anyone else work in the high tech industry?
Uncle Skid replied to Eric's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The only thing missing is the "Automatic Power-Point Slide Presentation" generator. Imagine how quickly you could be promoted into upper management with a tool like that!! -
What do you put in your coffee??
Uncle Skid replied to GregK's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think Upright Bill is as addicted to coffee as he is to this board. I'll feel bad for him if he ever runs out of coffee on the same day the board goes down! Seriously, Bill makes a *great* cup of coffee. -
My ultimate 'classic' 2-door import "Sport Wagon"
Uncle Skid replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That is a pretty cool looking ride, in a retro-sort of way. But Claude's right -- the first thing I thought of when I saw the back of it was the Ford Pinto. My parents had a Pinto wagon back in the late seventies. IIRC, it was the first car I ever drove, and I almost ran it into a tree. At least I didn't BACK it into a tree!! -
Hey Johnny! I really enjoyed your playing last night. You guys sounded great, and the audience all seemed to really like what you were doing. B) If you haven't seen it already, there's another thread about this show here: Organissimo at Dockers. -- Mark

Great show! (But the waitress didn't even ask if she could warm *my* bottle)! What's up with that?? Nothing I can think of!! Randy, Jim, and Joe sounded great (as usual); Johnny was a great addition to the band. Thanks for bringing great music to Muskegon, guys.

Happy Birthday, Alan. I really enjoy your site. Thanks! -- Mark

Fav Songs Off The Mitchell Set
Uncle Skid replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think more than a few people already mentioned it in the other Blue thread, but I gotta add my vote for "Good Humor Man". B) -
Happy Birthday, Dave! (and thanks again for that Plugged Nickel set! It's my birthday present to myself!) B) -- Mark

Mingus Tijuana Moods/M.Davis Plugged Nickel

*EIGHT* crappy CD's, all in one box? Now THAT's value!! Mosiac better be paying attention: the Blue Mitchell set only has *four* crappy CD's! -
Mingus Tijuana Moods/M.Davis Plugged Nickel

... and the proud new owner of a big, crappy 7CD set is... me!!! Thanks, shrugs. I had to order this, as I figured if Chuck thinks it is crap, it MUST be good!! B) -
I really wish I could have gone. Between seeing Mary last week, Phil Woods in GR, and the Newport guys last night, I used up all of my jazz night-out credits. Also needed to make sure next Sunday night was open! b3-er: Just got a email about your Docker's gig -- and it says 9pm - 1am. Past events there have been 6pm - 10pm, with the place largely empty by 10. Are the times on your email correct? Are you really starting at 9? -- Mark

Newport Jazz Festival "All-Star" Tour
Uncle Skid replied to Uncle Skid's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
My wife didn't ask ME to buy any CD's. (but that's never stopped me before!!) In addition to CD's from Moody and Carter, I'll definitely need to pick up some of Howard Alden's stuff. And more Cedar Walton is never a bad thing... Bill -- Peter Washington is indeed on those David Hazeltine discs I mentioned last night. -

Bummer! I was looking forward to "talking shop" with one of my favorite guitar players. At least we'll see him Sunday night! -
Norah Jones album thread at BN site
Uncle Skid replied to jazzhound's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm still waiting for Norah's cover of the Eric Cartman classic "I'm Going to Get Down on My Knees (and Start Pleasin' Jesus)"!! I bet that one will be GREAT!! (see ya in hell, jim... ) -
Well, I guess we'll need to cut him some slack, after all, he's a bass player!!
-
Bill - why would you call it a G minor add 9? I would think that way that chord is voiced (Bb on top) would mean that the Bb is functioning as an extension, and not as the minor 3rd. tonym has a good point -- it could also be called C7+9 or C7ALT, as there is no 5 in the chord. You could add b5, #5, and b9, and it would still be C7ALT, right? This is cool stuff, but it's confusing at times.
-
Looks like a G7#9 to me: In G, G=1, B=3, F=b7, and Bb=#9.

Great Show!! Thanks for posting the info, Lazaro. There's at least two West Michigan board members who really appreciate it! My 10-year old daughter came, too. I think she enjoyed it as well, but she's just too cool to admit it. I hope it will be one of those things that she'll look back on in twenty years and realize how cool it really was to see a legend like Phil Woods. B)

Musical instruments you could do without in jazz.
Uncle Skid replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Clarinet, and flute. But Howard Johnson's bass clarinet on Andrew Hill's Passing Ships just blows me away, and there's also some flute playing on various Cedar Walton recordings that I enjoy, too. So what the hell do I know? -

Newport Jazz Festival "All-Star" Tour

Chuck -- there was an article in yesterday's Muskegon Chronicle that said there are still tickets available, at the box office from 11am - 6pm. -- Mark -
Mary Rademacher, Tim Johnson, and Mark Kahny definitely put on a great show. Mary's voice is terrific, and she's a great dancer as well. She'll be back next Sunday night. The worst part was the turnout -- not bad, I suppose, but it's a damn shame that more people aren't showing up for these types of things. A group with as much talent as Mary's (and Organissmo, as welll) certainly deserve to have a larger audience. What else is there to do in West Michigan on a Sunday night, in the winter? Watch TV?? Go Bowling??? The acoustics in that part of the restaurant sounded pretty good to me. I'll bet you guys will sound great there -- looking forward to hearing you again! The kitchen being open is a nice bonus. I had already eaten prior to the show, but Bill had a plate of fried perch that was smelling and looking pretty damn good!
