  1. Billy Loes has died. Judging from the many times I read the quote, he was most famous for disagreeing with the common managers' demand that pitchers run a lot between starts. "I don't throw with my leg." http://bleacherreport.com/articles/427501-billy-loes-dies-at-80
  2. Edmonton Eskimos 28....British Columbia Lions 25 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W849.htm http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/eskimos-dump-lions-for-first-win/article1658411/ Good game between two bad teams. The game was stopped with three minutes to go in the first half because of lightning. Paul McCallum's consecutive FG streak was stopped at 24.
  3. Look what I've found! Live at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival! (Sangrey, eat your heart out!) http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/the-four-freshmen/
  4. Dino Saluzzi - El Encuentro I consider this a symphonic classical album. It's enjoyable if that's your cup of tea. ***** Food - Quiet Inlet This has the unusual combination of Tangerine Dream-like electronics with ethereal horns. I enjoy the early tracks, but not so much the later ones. I really like the drumming of Thomas Stronen. In fact, I'd say that the album wouldn't be much without it.
  5. Montreal Alouettes 41....Toronto Argonauts 10 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W848.htm http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/cobourne-carries-als-past-argos/article1656774/ The Als took control in the second quarter when the Argos had a 10-7 lead.

  12. Terrell Owens has signed with Cincinnati, at the request of Ochocinco. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/bengals-sign-owens/article1653790/
  13. Downbeat's online Readers Poll is up. To vote, you must either subscribe to the mag, which costs money, or subscribe to their monthly email newsletter, which is free. Here's the link: https://subforms.com/downbeat/other/newsletter_request/index.asp
  14. Jack Tatum has died of a heart attack at age 61. I always thought it extraordinarily poor judgment to title his book "They Call Me Assassin", considering the circumstances. I believe that John Madden and others always said that his hit on Stingley was perfectly clean and not out of the ordinary. It was a freak accident, not the result of dirty play. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/hard-hitting-former-raider-jack-tatum-dies-at-61/article1653489/
  15. Vultures are circling round the Eskimos. Expect heads to roll. http://www.theglobea...article1652546/ http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edmonton/2010/07/26/14834371.html
  16. I'll give it a listen! AccuJazz has its own Beatle Jazz station. Much of what I have heard has been later-Beatle compositions.
  17. Happy Birthday 2010 md!
  18. Sandy Beveridge got a job offer he couldn't turn down, so he has retired. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/ticats-safety-sandy-beveridge-retires/article1652284/ ***** Here is an article that answers the Jarious Jackson question. It says that he is nursing a shoulder injury. It also says that the Lions have signed a fellow named Mike Reilly who threw a TD pass in 46 consecutive Div. II games. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/lions-add-quarterback-reilly-to-roster/article1652095/
  19. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 47....Edmonton Eskimos 21 http://scoreboards.c.../final/W846.htm http://slam.canoe.ca...4/14816866.html http://www.theglobea...article1650946/ Jyles had a good day, presumably his best as a pro. If the Eskimos can't beat the last place Bombers playing without their starting QB, who can they beat? This is the first time since 1965 that the Eskimos have lost their first four games. The Esks have yet to score in the fourth quarter this season. As far as how the game went, the Bombers scored the first 26 points. Edmonton then scored the next 14, and with the momentum shift it looked like Winnipeg's lead might be in jeopardy. But it was all Winnipeg after that. ***** Calgary Stampeders 40....Saskatchewan Roughriders 20 http://www.theglobea...article1651036/ http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Games/2010/07/25/14819141.html It was tied 7-7 at the half, but it was all Stampeders in the second half. The Riders were the last of the unbeatens.
  20. Happy Birthday Marcel!
  21. Toronto Argonauts 24....British Columbia Lions 20 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W845.htm http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Games/2010/07/23/14811386.html http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/interception-rallies-argos-past-lions/article1650541/ For the second week in a row, the Argos snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The Lions led for most of the game, but Byron Parker ran back an interception for a TD with 2:36 left to give the Argos the lead. Travis Lulay was very sharp in the first half but cooled off in the second. He wasn't helped by Emmanuel Arceneaux, who dropped a pass that would have gone for a TD and probably iced the game for the Lions.
  22. About fifteen years ago I was on the phone with Cadence Magazine, ordering a year's subscription. Out of all their LP inventory, the fellow recommended the Breuker album called (if I remember correctly) a Paris, so I bought it. RIP
